30 MARCH 2017

Dear Parents,

HARMONY DAY On Wednesday, Pinewood PS celebrated ‘Harmony Day’ in appreciation of the cultural diversity at our school and in Australia. The celebration commenced with a morning assembly which was a sea of colour reflecting the many national costumes worn by children, including, of course, the colour orange!

The students sang a song about ‘Harmony Day’ and being children of the world, then proudly displayed their outfits for the day.

After assembly, the students participated in four fantastic rotational activities for the remainder of the day culminating with a display of African drumming in the hall.

Meanwhile, amazing aromas drifted from the staffroom as many parents representing different nationalities prepared and shared their favourite cultural dishes and with each other. Thanks to our wonderful Parents Club for initiating and organising the Harmony Day morning tea celebration for the parents.

Thank you also to Natalie Jones, our LOTE teacher and her dedicated team of staff helpers for their efforts in making Harmony Day such a great success.

Year 1 students ready for Harmony Day! DISTRICT ATHLETICS Congratulations to the students who represented Pinewood PS at the Syndal District School Sports Association carnival last Friday.

The weather was perfect for such an event and the enthusiasm and good sportsmanship displayed by each student was exceptional. Well done to you all!

ASSEMBLY ON FRIDAY Assembly will commence at 9.30 am tomorrow. Parents Club will draw the Easter raffle during assembly. Thanks again to our Parents Club for their great fundraising activities this term.

END OF TERM 1 REMINDER School will be dismissed at 2.30pm on Friday. Crossing Supervisors will be working at this earlier time.

TERM2 Term 2 commences on Tuesday 18 April at 9.00am . (as Monday 17 April is a public holiday -Easter Monday). Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday. Karen Jenkin Principal

Road Safety Around the School Pinewood takes the safety of our children seriously and as educators we strive to instil the importance of being careful in areas where there are road/lane crossings and cars.

We would be grateful if parents/carers could speak to, or discuss, with their children: the necessity to always look before crossing roads using the school crossings at all times including

those in the shopping centre getting off their bikes and walking across roads

especially when crossing the lane between the bike cage and the shopping centre

Children who ride their bikes to school should not be riding along the laneway from Pinewood Drive to the bike cage. We would encourage them to enter the school at the gate nearest the lane from Pinewood Drive, and WALKING their bike along the path inside the school to the bike cage, or WALKING across the lane between the shops and school beside the bike cage.

Also a reminder to parents the two minute zones are

dropping off and picking up only and you must stay

with your car. Toombah St. on the school side, from

Pinewood Drive to the staff car park, is a no stopping

zone and cannot be used as a drop off zone.

PARENTS ARE REMINDED NOT TO USE THE STAFF CAR

PARK AS A DROP OFF OR PICK UP POINT FOR SCHOOL

OR THE OUT OF HOURS PROGRAM.

Please remember the children’s safety is of the

utmost importance.

In the art room this term we explored the theme of WATER, using a variety of techniques and materials to interpret our summer and aquatic experiences:

Year 1: "On the Beach- Aerial Landscape" Year 2: "The Thong Project" Year 3: "Jumping Jellyfish" Year 4: "Lighthouses" Year 5: "Fish Tales Print" Year 6: "Oceanic Source of Light"

Prep classes explored colour in their vibrant pice: "My Own Two Hands".

Please see page 4 for a snapshot of the children’s work.

In Term 2 we will be creating work within the ART OF AFRICA framework, in line with our school production THE LION KING. Fran Combes Visual Arts

Please remember to book in for Holiday Program. Our excursion days are both fully booked there are no places available for those days (Friday 7th and Wednesday 12th April) and please remember to be at the school by 8:45 am for both excursion days as the buses cannot wait as we are on a time schedule. If you are not booked for the program on these 2 days please do not attend as there will be no staff on the premises. Please make sure your children have breakfast before they come to the program as we do not provide it, remember to pack plenty of food for the duration of the day as well as hats and drink bottles. We would like to ask our families if they have any old art smocks or shirts they can donate to the program. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great week see you there.

SCHOOL BANKING

A BIG thank you Sarah Scales who has been our volunteer school banking coordinator for the last 5 years.

Thank you to Alison Limoux who has kindly offered to take over this position. We appreciate the time you

put aside to do this job. School banking would not be possible without our parent volunteers. Next term

School Banking day will be Thursday.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways: Online - Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. In branch - Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driv-

er’s licence and birth certificate. If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

From Term 2, School Banking day will be changing to Thursday! Each week you need to hand in the completed deposit book and Dollarmites deposit wallet to the class teacher. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program infor-

mation pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
