This year marks the 3rd year that Pinoy Fitness came into existence. Starting from a simple website, we have grown to bea site visited by more than 100,000 individuals amounting to more than 400,000 page views per month and our Facebook fanpage has grown to more than 35,000 followers. This only means that the number of people who’s starting to live a healthy and fit lifestyle is continously growing, which makes me happy to be part of it!

This issue is about Unity. As we venture into a new platform, the website and the magazine still aim to provide informationand inspiration to everyone who are embracing a healthy lifestyle. Like our cover Drew and Iya who despite their different fitness routines (Drew is into Triathlon and Iya is into Core Kinesis), are still united with their passion to stay fit and healthy.

I would like to take this opporunity to thank the people who supported me through the years and believed in the vison of the website. Starting with Mikey Macainag who helped me conceptualize the vision of the site. To Mars Callo, Jared Baliguat, JC De Leon, for without their kakulitan I would still be a shadow behind the website, Cheryl Castaneda who has always been my sup-port system in building the community, my friends Bianca Desales, Yvette Buenconsejo, Lisa Nicandro, Risha Lai, Marky Fernandez, Ting Del Valle, Elizabeth Tan, Tin Aguda, Shey Jose who went beyond the callof duty to support me to build the foundations of the community and to the people who believed in me through the years as well as becoming my source of inspiration, Coach Mherlz, Jackie Gutierrez, Peachy Tamayo, Lems So, Czhel Macogay, Nylah Bautista, and many more! Thank you!

TECHNOLOGY AND RUNNERS

by Jason Cruz

The Philippine running scene is a tech expo. When one looks around the starting line, MP3 music players strapped around arms, hydration belts, high-tech GPS-enabled watches, and compression sleeves of all lengths and colors are a common sight. This is a clear indication of a very important happening in the running scene, not just in the Philippines, but around the globe: technology is becoming more and more indispensable to runners, either when training or when competing.

Technology in running had humble beginnings in the most basic form it could take: running wear. Early running enthusiasts wore ankle-height shoes with leather uppers, and this was a breakthrough during its time. As recently as the previous running generation (20 or so years ago), shoes were made mostly with a lighter and tougher material: rubber. In turn, rubber would make way to patented high-impact materials unique to manufacturers (ex. New Balance has “Revlite”; Nike has “Lunarlon”; K-Swiss has “Aosta II”). Innovations such as these would pave the way to what we see today – transition to better equipment and apparel, all in the pursuit of a better and a more comfortable running experience.

It is also nearly impossible to see runners donning a simple tee when participating in a Sunday road race. Many runners would don the running event’s jersey – made of lightweight material, for the most part – while many others prefer to wear their regular training clothes. From simple lightweight nylon shorts, technology in running apparel now has reached a level wherein even socks are custom-made to fit one foot better than the other. Running tops and shorts now have embedded reflective materials in order to help with runner safety when running during dusk and dawn. They are also made of lighter and more comfortable materials that wick sweat away from the skin and generally make the runner feel a lot more comfortable. As anyrunner would know from experience, a comfortable runner is a better runner!

The most striking adaptation of technology on a runner would have to be watches. In this day and age, it is virtually impossible to train with any sort of effectiveness without using a reliable and efficient watch. From simple digital watches that displayed time passed and perhaps, if you were lucky, ten to twenty laps, runners now have access to running watches that deliver so much more. A GPS-enabled watch is one of the most important running gadgets a runner can ever own, and is usually a serious and hefty investment. Watches like these track distances and time very accurately, enabling runners to train well (for example, hitting distance milestones per week) and even tracking calories burned (in order to plan better pre-run and post-run nutrition). Gone are the days when runners rely solely on physical and cumbersome road markers (which in some cases are not very accurate) as they now have the capabilities

to use technology to keep track of distances, and adjust their individual paces accordingly.

Where does the running community go from here then? For one, technology has truly immersed itself in the running lifestyle of the twenty-first century and this is actually a good thing. Runners are undeniably getting faster, posting faster and more impressive times; injury-prevention is more individual-centered now as runners learn more about their bodies via advanced watches and heart-rate moni-tors. Technology is here to stay, and it has, for much better than worse, helped advanced running both as a sport and as a lifestyle anyone can practice.

As of writing, jsncruz is a few days away from his debut marathon, the 2012 Bohol Marathon. When not running, he is a social media manager by profession, and a casual blogger, writer, and wine geek. Follow him on twitter @jsncruz.

BARRE3Pilates, Yoga and Ballet Barre Imagine having the benefits of these three physical exercises in one revolutionary workout. Yes, all of these you can have in the

class of mind and body exercise designed to lengthen and lift the whole body. It aims to transfer body awareness into our everyday activities anchored on the wisdom of yoga, strength and efficiency of pilates, and flexibility and grace of ballet barre. This fitness disci-pline focuses on establishing and maintaining good spinal alignment and provides long term postural benefits through the use of those three disciplines rolled into a unique sequence. Barre3 is highly recommended to relieve stress from work and keep a balance in mind and body. Trying out for the first time may be a tough feat as you will have to concentrate on the different routines. Listen to your body and know what you can extend in each session. It takes some patience and perseverance to get through your first class. Especially if you haven’t done your usual exercise routine for a while. Expect your body to ache the day after but it is only a good indication that the routine worked on your muscles. Barre3 aims to strengthen your core. So as you progress in each session you feel your body moving with such agility and grace you probably never have imagined you are capable of.

The Barre3 studio set-up has 3 corners of the wall with ballet barres, which is essential in the work out together with yoga mats, yoga straps, dumbbells and fit balls. The cork flooring is both soft and sturdy, which protects the spine and joints during positions. There are three class types that has different fitness levels – advanced, foundations and open-level classes.

Open-level. Open level format designed for mature and new students. Made up of a highly effective sequence of exercises designed to transform the body to one of equal balance, strength and flexibility.

Barre3 foundations. Barre3 foundations has the same highly effective sequence of exercises as Barre3 but at a slower pace and with a different tone. Instructors emphasize basic alignment, foundation, and specific muscle actions to balance the body.

Barre3 Advanced. The advanced class follows the same sequence as traditional

We asked you to send in questions to be answeredby individuals from different backgrounds. We rounded up four fitness trainers and sportsenthusiasts to give us their take on your queries.

Anthony Macaraeg, or Tony-macas he is fondly called is a former 2008 USA Amateur Bodybuilding Association (ABA)Champion (Natural Category) and has competed and placed 4th in the 2008 International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA) Championships held in San Francisco,USA. Born of Filipino-American descent, he has worked in the fitness industry for the last ten years as a Nutrition Consultant and Diabetes Educator. He specialized in managing adult and pediatric patients with Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, and Hypertension. He now currently resides in the Philippines, and acts as a Nutrition Consultant to athletes, celebrities and still trains your average fitness fanatic.

1. What’s your favourite cardio workout for weight/fat loss?

This is a bit difficult to answer with just one workout. The true answer for fat loss I would give is to adjust your eating lifestyle habits! My favorite cardio workout would really depend on how I’m feeling that day. The motivating factors would be energy levels and/or muscle/joint soreness. One workout I

usually do when I’m rushed with time and have only 20mins to spare for the gym, I do a 10 min Bar Complex Exercise. This promotes cardio strength and activates your CNS (central nervous system), to activate some muscle hypertrophy (get big muscles) and to elevate your metabolic rate so that your body can burn more calories during the day, even when you’re not working out!

2. What advice would you give to build muscle mass?

My advice is to have a combination of the right components. My equation goes as simple as this:

Healthy Diet+ Resistance Training

+ Cardiovascular Exercise

Quality Muscle Mass

Yes, you’ve probably heard that in order to build muscle you have to eat more! Let me just give you a basic diet tip; When you hear the saying that you have to eat as much protein as your bodyweight, remember this is your LBM (lean body mass) and not your total body weight! You want to have a ratio of 1 gram (1g) of protein per 1 pound (lb.) of lean body mass (muscle). So after a good workout don’t starve yourself! Go get some lean mean protein!

3. What’s your favourite strength workout?

I would like to say my favorite of all lifts is the deadlift. This exercise will pretty much set the tone of your physique from weak to strong! This compound movement activates the legs and the whole back. I believe this is the basic movement that will give more size to your back and legs and set you apart from your average ‘chest and bicep gym goer’. I noticed my physique changed the minute I incorporated olympic lifts, especially that of the deadlift! Go Heavy or Go Home! (With proper form of course!)

Marky Banez, “Markyb” is a veteran personal trainer who’s in his early 40’s. After spending a decade in the corporate super- gym industry he decided to call it quits. He nowspecializes in functional training and athletic conditioning on his own sweet time. Nowadays you can see him hanging around Eastwood City Cafes, comfortably sipping mochas and typing away fitness articles on his laptop.

1. What’s your favourite cardio workout for weight/fat loss?

A 30 minute brisk walk or a bike ride at sunrise just before breakfast. An empty stomach leaves your body no choice but to draw from your fat reserves.

2. What advice would you give to build muscle mass?

My favourite advice to give for muscle mass building would be to go heavy with the weight and eat right. Protein loading plays a big factor in muscle mass building!

3. What’s your favourite strength workout?

I have to go with Tony-mac on this one! “Deadlifts Baby! Yeah!” “Go heavy! Or Go home!” This exercise is the Bomb! Especially when it comes to whole body muscle activation! Just do it and reapthe benefits.

Roger Lindevall: a.k.a. the “Colonel” was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a former “Swedish Marine” and former “Physical Trainer” for the Manila Police SWAT Team. He was an active adviser and former judge to the Philippine Body Building Association (PBBA). He was the proud owner of the Eurozone Gym here in the metro (circa 90’s) and has been a hard-core gym rat for the last 25 years. He’s currently “still kicking-ass” in the Libis area.

1. What’s your favourite cardio workout for weight/fat loss?

High intensity power walk

2. What advice would you give to build muscle mass?

Sets between 8 and 12 reps and not too much weight, should be able to handle it.

3. What’s your favourite strength workout?

Lat pull-down/ seated alternated dumbbell curls

Yasmin Baumann-Perucchetti fondly called “Yas” by the Fitness Couch crew; she is somewhat of a globetrotter, having grown up with a modelling background. At the tender age of 15, she has worked abroad with top designers such as Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Versace and the like. She has also appeared locally on billboards here such as; Rustan’s, American Express, Essenxa, and has graced the cover of magazines such as; Mega, Cosmo and Tattler, to name a few. She has always loved sports growing up in her native New Zealand, taking skiing trips at least twice a year which still remains to be her favorite sport.

Now presently residing in the Philippines, she spends most daysdividing her busy schedule between life coaching and fitness training.

1. What’s your favourite cardio workout for weight/ fat loss?

I love interval jogging or sprinting. I will jog, on a speed of 11 km/h, for two minutes then walk for one minute, and continue this cycle for 30 minutes. Or I will up the speed, to more of a sprint and sprint on 14km/h, for one minute, and rest for one minute, and I would usually continue that cycle for 20 minutes as it’s more intense. Interval training allows you to increase endurance levels, while holding on to your precious muscle, which is your body’s natural calorie burner! Plus, it’s just a bonus that you can getbetter results for less ofthe time!

2. What advice would you give to build muscle mass?

To build muscle mass, I would follow a weight lifting routine, and vary this with core, body weight exercises. Its amazing how you can tone your body with some simple exercises using your own body weight, and all you need is a floor, and perhaps a mat for comfort, so you can do those at home. No excuses right!? I would advise everyone to get into some good strength training routines, and be conscious of what you eat. Our muscles need to be fed when they are growing. To simply choose better food options such as steamed, baked or grilled and not fried, or brown rice instead of white, lean meats and poultry instead of fatty meats would go a long way in building your sexy muscles.

3. What’s your favourite strength workout?

For strength my favourite would be the “Spartacus” Workout! It is acircuit style training program which is so much fun and it really works for me. It will give you a good cardio workout at the same time strengthening the body’s different muscle groups. But best of all it slays my greatest gym opponen: boredom!

DEFYING GRAVITY WITH GRACE AND GRIP:

IN POLE DANCING

course but if you keep trying, if you keepattending and you will listen attentively to your instructor, makukuha mo, eh. You will learn it.”

One of the benefits of pole dancing is that it teaches self confidence. Since it requires less clothing- only short shorts and tank top- so your skin will stick to the pole, you will soon learn to be more comfortable with your own skin as you get better. The saying “less is more” certainly applies in pole dancing.

What’s more is that you actually won’t need a dance partner because that would already be the sturdy, realiable 8 to 9 feet pole!

Ciara’s students come from different age groups; mommies, 50-year olds, 40-year olds and some are really young including a 14-year old student who lost weight.

Pole dancing is both a physical and mental workout. Presence of mind is very important to avoid any miscalculation on your next move while on the pole. A lot of people enjoy it

CIARA SOTTO-OCONER

because you can have fun learning the routines while shaping your abs for instance.

Ciara teaches pole for beginners as well as advanced lessons. A normal dance routine would be about three minutes according to Ciara. A five-minute routine would be tiring. “If the routine would be longer, it would look like a strip club, kung anu-ano na lang.”

Staying fit is a must in pole dancing. Ciara continues to train and shares that her classes serve as her workout too since she also needs to perfrom the routines as an instructor. “Sometimes we have advanced trainings with other teachers. That’s once a week for three hours”. She adds that she works out with her husband too which serves as their bonding time. Interestingly, she had a pole build right

Ciara started pole dancing way back in 2006 when she was in Las Vegas for a musical production. When she came home in 2009, Ciara enrolled at Movement Dance Studio owned by Ms. Ma. Myla “Lala” Dinglasan. The she eventually decided to share her passion by teaching at the very same studio.

“I’ve been with Movement for almost three years already but I’ve been teaching for more than a year now.” Ciara added that she got certified in Movement last May. “We had to do this course for IPDFA (International Pole Dance Fitness Association) to be certified to teach.” She used to do bikram yoga but Ciara confessed that she stopped when she got addicted to pole dancing.

According to Ciara, she has this vision of pole dancing being disengaged with strip clubs, though she has nothing against them. “I want girls to try it because it is liberating and effortlessly sexy.”

”I have students who look really sexy pole dancing but I make sure it doesn’t look slutty. I don’t want it to look like that at all. I want pole dancing to be on the fitness side.”Even after being an instructor for more than a year now, Ciara still sees coaching pole dancing as a challenge. “It’s hard at first, of

Pole dancing is often associated with sexy dance and sometimes misguidedly linked to strip clubs. Though the dance has started in strip clubs, it did not stop there. Pole dancing is now being introduced and taught in gyms and dance studios gaining high regard as an art combining dance and gymnastics. It does not only strengthen one’s core and improve flexibility with grace but it also empowers and builds one’s confidence as well. Here in the Philippines, pole dancing is starting to be recognized as a fitness discipline. Associated with pole dancing and its growing prominence in the sphere of fitness is singer-actress and now pole dance instructor Ciara Sotto-Oconer.

“It’s really empowering” Ciara shared enthusiastically as she invited the PF girls to try out pole dancing. Adding that it is not just limited to women as there are also men who attend her class. PF

It’s not whether one is too young or too old to race, rather it is about strength and perseverance; and that undying will to keep going.

In celebrating birthdays year after year, people are in high spirits throwing parties andreceiving gifts. Enjoying this special day with the ones they love in every way possible thus adding more memories that could definitely last for a lifetime. But when the clock strikes again, furious realizations come to mind. “Am I this old?”

Fear of not being able to deal with the things in our usual routine is the biggest threat age brings about. For a man who sees this as just tricky numbers, Victor Ting appreciates life by going after challenges his stamina could handle. He chose to go beyond his limits and witnessed how he accomplished everything he could never imagined.

From resilient phase

High school as his highest educationalattainment, Ting never hinders himself tocontinue racing after his dreams. He has managed to establish a studio covering different special occasions. With a passion for cameras and creatively shooting wonderful sceneries, he proudly sent his four children to college. But coming from a family with inherited health complications, Ting was disturbed on how his condition would affect him physically. Hypertension is a chronic medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. This requires the heart to work harder than normal to circulate blood through the blood vessels.

“Bale yung parents ko kasi namatay, 40+ [years old] namatay na kasi may lahi kaming high blood. Kaya yun, naisip ko tumakbo na lang para pinakaexercise. Pero nag-umpisa akong tumakbo, 45 na (My parents died at the age of 40 because our family has a strain of

By Marie Ville R. Torrijos

high blood. That’s why I think ofrunning as my sole exercise. But I startedrunning at 45.),” he wistfully reminisced.

Sprinting dreams ahead

Testing his own capability, Ting decided to gear up into the race track. Bought running shoes and eventually paid a P100 registration fee, he began his journey to witness what marathon changes him into. He neverdisregards training every morning in preparing his endurance for the long run.

“Ang marathon ko [sinalihan ay] from 1982 to

1982 hanggang 1990, bihira ang marathons. Minsan twice a year lang nagkakaroon. Hindi gaya ngayon, halos isang taon ang daming marathon (My total marathon joined from 1982

time, marathon was rarely held. Sometimes they only conduct twice a year. Unlike now, a year comprises numerous marathons.)” he pleasantly shared his running experiences.

Ting also tried the call of mountaineering. He overcame the struggle of climbing the tallest mountains in the country through the unending support of his team mates. But his devotion on running kept enhancing as he accomplished more outlying distances. “Ang

lang. Noong January 29, tinakbo ko [ay] BDM – Bataan Death March Ultra marathon (The

year, January 29 BDM – Bataan Death March Ultra marathon.)”

Glorious fulfillment

Indeed, as running is an outrageous adventure, meeting several younger runners is his dearest moment treasured. Such inspiration touched his heart and motivated him to launch two runners clubs – La Loma Fly Ace Runner 2005 and San Lazaro Running Club 2009. These non-profit organizations would develop beginners and hone their skills and finally learn the true principles of racing.

All the way through his success, criticisms contiue to chase him. Such as why anguish himself at his age and instead simply rest and relax. Nevertheless, Ting takes no notice of these hurdles and thrive on to the finish line.

“Ang takbo naman ay sa sarili mo. Parang nilalaban mo sarili mo lang na kaya mo ibreak yung sariling oras mo (Running is for yourself. It’s like your challenging yourself to break your own time.),” he splendidly stated.

organized 70 Km run starting from Laguna down to the busy streets of Quezon City circle. It served as a birthday gift for all the fruitful hard work he achieved throughout his own race. For Ting, opportunities should be grabbed once the chance falls into your hands. “Huwag ninyong isipin yung hirap tumakbo lalo na yung mga first timer na sasali ng marathon o ultramarathon. Basta isipin mo kaya mo yan, tatapusin mo yan, huwag kang susuko. (Don’t think it’s hard to run especially to those first timers who will join the marathon or ultra marathon. Just bear in mind that you can do it, you should finish it, don’t give up.)”

In life, age is one of the things you cannot control nor stop. While your clock is still ticking, execute your plans right, stand up when you strip along the rocky road and trust yourself and especially trust God that these dreams may be made into reality.

This Dagdagay-inspired indigenous foot massage is deeply rooted in our own Ifugao culture, originally from the indigenous Igorot tribes of the Mountain Province. It involves applying deep strokes or “hagod” using herbal clay to cleanse and purify the feet and stroking the soles of the feet with bamboo sticks to stimulate them. The use of the bamboo stick is to concentrate the pressure on specific pressure points and to clean the feet by scraping dirt and dead skin away. This method is therapeutic for high blood pressure, blood circulation, hormonal imbalance and depressive disorder or stress.

OUTBREAK MANILAIN BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY (BGC)

JULY

28

On its second installment, this time at Bonifacio Global City and at night, Outbreak Manila 2 unleashed more scary zombies and even more fun. A great gimmick used in Outbreak Manila 2 was the presence of obstacles. From elastic band ‘forests’ to a dark and creepy maze house, the run certainly lived up to its ‘scary’ and high-tension hype. The zombies were very well made-up and – provided one did not get them to break the fourth wall – really allowed a runner to be immersed in a ‘zombie apocalypse’ setting. Some runners were in ridiculous and outrageous costumes, all in the name of having a good time.
