Human-Computer Interaction Assignment 1

is a visual bookmarking tool that helps you

discover and save creative ideas.

A powerful community experience that is 100% visual

Mission: help people discover the things they love, and inspire them to go

do those things in their daily lives.

is a place to discover ideas for all your projects and interests,

hand-picked by people having similar interests and style in order to plan life’s

important projects.

Ex: searching for “graph visualization”

Boards are created through a user selecting an item,

page, website, etc. and pinning it to an existing or newly

created board.

puts web content into sticky-note sized blocks

users can organize onto pin boards that fill the entire

browser screen. The majority of each block is filled by a

photo, and the ability to "like," "repin" or comment at

the bottom make it look like its own mini web page.

Users save and share pins from multiple resources onto boards based on many

criteria, e.g. similar characteristics, a theme, birthday parties, planning a

vacation, writing a book, interior decorating, holidays. Boards can develop

projects, organize events, or save pictures and data together.

Users can follow specific boards to customize their own interests on their

homepage and get inspired every day.

Adding a pin to an already existing board is well-designed according to the user

experience because it displays the most recently used boards above the others.

Also, it warns the user in a friendly way if the pin already exists in this board.

Targeting Users

has its own creative way presenting Pinterest to the new users who

might get interested to use Pinterest for similar reasons like those randomly

generated on their website.

The world nowadays doesn’t have enough time

to enter all the account information in order to

sign up. This is time consuming and the users

might not even try your website if you ask them

to enter many information. That’s why for

better user experience, Pinterest provided a

button to Continue with Facebook since nearly

all users have a Facebook account already.

Navigation Bar

The navigation is made more intuitive,

so it’s faster and easier to get to where

you want to go.

More is, well, more

Pins are bigger and more information has been added related to pins, so it’s easier to find

things you’re interested in. For example, on each pin, you’ll see pins from the same board,

other boards this pin was pinned to, and a whole slew of related pins.

Indeed, part of the value of Pinterest is that it brings you out of yourself

and into the world of things. As the Huffington Post writer Bianca Bosker

argued, Facebook and Twitter are inwardly focused (“Look at me!”) while

Pinterest is outwardly focused (“Look at this!”). It’s the world as seen

through not your eyes but your imagination. “In such a self-obsessed

society, this is a place where people are focusing attention on something

other than themselves,” says Courtney Brennan, an avid Pinterest user.

What’s special about Pinterest that makes it so addictive?

1. Use of Visual Imagery - Would you rather browse a beautiful shop or

a list of items in a catalog? It is the use of visual imagery that sets

Pinterest apart (in an important way) from traditional (text based)

bookmarking sites

2. Organized Sets & Collecting Behavior

3. Self Expression - Another innate human trait, there is a need to leave

our mark on the world, to show how we see and experience things. This is

probably because Self Expression is tied to our sense of identity. Pinterest

boards are a form of this self expression, whether in the topics that

interests us, or how we choose to fill a board.

4. Social Sharing - Once we create something, we naturally want to share

it with others. In this respect, I think the Pinterest concept lends itself

better to social sharing (on Facebook) far more than other services do.

5. Frictionless User Interface - Of course, none of this would be so

popular if it wasn't so easy. A simple "+1" or "Like" is more popular (if

less accurate) than 5 stars or thumbs up/down. The Pinterest team has

also made it incredibly simple to get stuff into a board (Pinning via

browser plug-ins, for example).

6. Great Initial User Experience - The site does a great job of

introducing itself to you, setting you up with blank boards to fill, rather

than a blank page with instructions.

7. Recommendations – Once you pin your interests, you enter a loop of

recommendations that you’ll definitely admire.

How it is used:

When the vast majority of the population began possessing a camera at all times via their mobile phone, this type of photo-driven culture was a natural byproduct.

The successful reason for is to provide the chance for

people to explore fantastic photos with viewing them at glance.

Some Interesting Uses:

1- The Mountain View Police Department uses it for lost and found items.

2- DIY (Do It Yourself)

3- Many other interesting uses helpful for generating ideas or planning life

projects.

Conceptual Design:

Conceptual Model

Objects Attributes Operations Pinned Item image, URL,

description, owner,

view, pin, like, share, comment, visit site, send

Board name, description, category, cover, owner

view, edit, delete

User name, picture, username, about, location, website

create board, follow board

Table 1. Object/operation analysis for Pinterest

A conceptual model provides a starting point for the development of a product

vocabulary, i.e., a dictionary of terms that will be used to identify each of the

objects and operations embodied in the software.

This helps ensure that terms are used consistently throughout the app and its

documentation.

is perfectly branded in the mind of its users by the word pinning.

It’s mentioned on their website not to use (pin, repin, pinner, pinboard,

and pin it) phrases to refer to activities that happen on other social media.

Pinning only happens on Pinterest.

Design Metaphors:

"It's almost like a window-shopping mode," says Khoi Vinh, the former design director for NYTimes.com. "It flattens the information hierarchy," describes Jeff Croft, a web designer and co-founder of eBook lending site Lendle.

On Flickr and Pinterest, users are able to communicate with other

users via photos. That is the same. However, the main difference

between Flickr and Pinterest is the media's characteristic.

It is explained as the words: stock and flow in online media.

Flow: Information flows to the user; timely, emergent and

engaging

Stock: Information exists at a specific location, static, archived and organized

for reference.

Obviously, Pinterest is categorized in flow-oriented WEB media.

But Flickr, even Instagram are Stock-oriented WEB media.

Now, so huge volume of image is store on stock-oriented WEB media, Ex.

Flickr, or other photo share services. Many people feel tired to explore fantastic

photos too much time at many Web-site by many search keywords. So that they

may eager to emerge flow-oriented photo communities. In such current

situation around WEB media, Pinterest appears brilliantly on internet.

How the product meets its users' needs and

wants:

is a platform where beauty and inspiration comes from. It

definitely works very fine related to meeting the users’ needs and wants in

order to find creative ideas and inspiration to life projects. Users’ satisfaction is

mostly achieved within finding the required results.

Suggestions for

Improvements and

Redesign:

Logout and Settings are only found in the

profile page. It should be placed in the

Menu bar throughout the whole website.

In a specific board, when searching through pins using some criteria,

“Highlight” option may be added in order to increase the size of the pin to

be recognizable by the eye or even change its color in a simple way.
