Leonardo da Vinci Born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, Leon-ardo da Vinci was the epitome of a “Renais-sance man.” Posses-sor of a curious mind and keen intellect, da Vinci studied the laws of science and nature, which great-ly informed his work as a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer and draftsman. His ideas and body of work—which includes “Vir-gin of the Rocks,” “The Last Supper” and “Mona Lisa”—have influenced countless artists and made da Vinci a leading light of the Italian Renais-sance.Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in a farmhouse nestled amid the undulating hills of Tuscany. Young Leonardo received lit-tle formal education beyond basic reading, writing and mathe-matics instruction, but his artistic talents were evident from an early age. Around the age of 14, da Vin-
ci began a lengthy apprenticeship with the noted artist An-drea del Verrocchio in Florence. He learned a wide breadth of tech-nical skills including metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, draw-ing, painting and sculpting. His earliest known dated work—a pen-and-ink draw-ing of a landscape in the Arno valley—was sketched in 1473.Leonardo thought sight was human-kind’s most import-ant sense and eyes the most important organ. He stressed the importance of saper vedere, “knowing how to see.” He believed in the accumulation of direct knowledge and facts through observa-tion.Around 1495, Ludovi-co Sforza commis-sioned da Vinci to paint “The Last Sup-per” on the back wall of the dining hall in-side the monastery of Milan’s Santa Maria delle Grazie. The mas-terpiece, which took approximately three
years to complete, cap-tures the drama of the moment when Jesus informs the Twelve Apostles gathered for Passover dinner that one of them would soon betray him. The range of facial expres-sions and the body language of the figures around the table bring the masterful compo-sition to life. The de-cision by da Vinci to paint with tempera and oil on dried plas-ter instead of painting a fresco on fresh plas-ter led to the quick de-terioration and flaking of “The Last Supper.” Although an improp-er restoration caused further damage to the mural, it has now been stabilized using modern conservation techniques.In 1503, da Vinci started working on what would become his most well known painting—and argu-ably the most fa-mous painting in the
world—the “Mona Lisa.” The privately commissioned work is characterized by the enigmatic smile of the woman in the half-portrait. For da Vinci, the “Mona Lisa” was forever a work in progress, as it was his attempt at perfection. Leonardo never parted with the painting. Today, the “Mona Lisa” hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.Although da Vinci is known for his artistic abilities, fewer than two-dozen paintings attributed to him ex-ist. One reason is that his interests were so varied that he wasn’t a prolific painter. For centuries afterward, however, thousands of pages from his private journals with notes, drawings, observa-tions and scientific theories have surfaced and provided a fuller measure of a true “Re-naissance man.”

Rhyme TimeHere's to the chigger,
The bug that's no biggerThan the point of an undersized pin;
But the welt that he raisesSure itches like blazes,
And that's where the rub comes in!
There was a young lady of Cork, Whose Pa made a fortune in pork;
He bought for his daughter A tutor who taught her
To balance green peas on her fork.
There was a young man so benighted He never knew when he was slighted;
He would go to a party And eat just as hearty,
As if he’d been really invited.
A canner, exceedingly canny, One morning remarked to his granny,
“A canner can can Anything that he can;
But a canner can’t can a can, can he?”
A flea and a fly in a flue, Were imprisoned, so what could they
do? Said the fly, “Let us flee!” “Let us fly,” said the flea,
And they flew through a flaw in the flue.

New dog adviceStart training early. Don’t wait until your
dog is 6 months old to take him to training class. You can begin teaching him to sit,
come, stay and walk on a leash when you bring him home at 7 or 8 weeks of age, and he can start puppy kindergarten by 9 or 10
weeks.
New cat advicePrepare one room in advance, where he will be confined for the first few days. Place some food and water in the room, and a litter tray, being sure to keep the food and litter as far apart from each other as possible. Spend as much time as possible in the room, ideally
sitting on the floor or a low chair. Bring him food and water quietly at first, then progress to some gentle grooming. Once your cat seems calm and wanting to explore, you can let him out of the room to the rest of the house. Be sure to close all doors and windows to the out-side, a new cat can easily panic and get lost if he gets out on the first new days of freedom.
Teach children to be nice to the cat, do not allow ear or tail pulling, or other rough handling. Cats generally like gentle petting, sitting in laps, and grooming with a soft brush. They also
appreciate some fun toys like a furry mouse on a stick and string.

1933 Golden Gate Bridge is bornOn January 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers began excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for the structure’s huge anchorages.Following the Gold Rush boom that began in 1849, speculators realized the land north of San Francisco Bay would increase in val-ue in direct proportion to its accessibility to the city. Soon, a plan was hatched to build a bridge that would span the Golden Gate, a narrow, 400-foot deep strait that serves as the mouth of the San Francisco Bay, connecting the San Francisco Peninsula with the south-ern end of Marin County.Although the idea went back as far as 1869, the proposal took root in 1916. A former en-gineering student, James Wilkins, working as a journalist with the San Francisco Bul-letin, called for a suspension bridge with a center span of 3,000 feet, nearly twice the length of any in existence. Wilkins’ idea was estimated to cost an astounding $100 million. So, San Francisco’s city engineer, Michael M. O’Shaughnessy (he’s also credited with com-ing up with the name Golden Gate Bridge), began asking bridge engineers whether they could do it for less.Engineer and poet Joseph Strauss, a 5-foot tall Cincinnati-born Chicagoan, said he could.Eventually, O’Shaughnessy and Strauss con-cluded they could build a pure suspension bridge within a practical range of $25-30 mil-lion with a main span at least 4,000 feet. The construction plan still faced opposition, in-cluding litigation, from many sources. By the time most of the obstacles were cleared, the Great Depression of 1929 had begun, limiting financing options, so officials convinced vot-ers to support $35 million in bonded indebt-edness, citing the jobs that would be created for the project. However, the bonds couldn’t be sold until 1932, when San-Francisco based Bank of America agreed to buy the entire project in order to help the local economy.
The Golden Gate Bridge officially opened on May 27, 1937, the longest bridge span in the world at the time. The first public crossing had taken place the day before, when 200,000 people walked, ran and even roller skated over the new bridge.
With its tall towers and famous red paint job, the bridge quickly became a famous Ameri-can landmark, and a symbol of San Francis-co.

2016: Intense Efforts, Shining Success Well, isn’t this refreshing: every effort you make this year will be rewarded in due time. We all know that making a living, relationships, and just the little
things in everyday life take a lot of work. Well, this year you’ll be up and running, and appreciated. Yes, the Universe might actually cooperate more
often than not! Shocking, I know.
The catch: you still need to work hard. It isn’t all about luck and fate. That needs your push and collected good karma. So, what realm needs the biggest boost? You decide, and then focus your efforts and attention there and watch
things happen.Why should you take on the world on alone when you can be more intense and effective with those who share your vision of the future? That future is yours (along with your chosen few teammates) to create now. 2016 is a year of teamwork, and of shared efforts with partners and loved ones. And that
includes celebrating your wins, too!If you start to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, shift your focus to fewer or
more minor things. No effort is small if done with passion. Then let some of this year’s good luck go to work for you. A small dose of faith and luck will
go far at crucial times.In numerology, 2016 is a 9 year, and 9 is pure magic. It creates what it intense-
ly visualizes, and then it vanishes and leaves room for the next new wonderful thing!

Thank you to Mon-ster.com for these great ideas, please see monster.com for jobs and more advice.Like many career ad-vice experts, Steve Fogarty, staffing partner at Waggener Edstrom, says candi-dates should research a company thorough-ly before an interview. And if the company is a private firm, that’s not an excuse to skip doing your home-work. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and finding a way to gather information on a company “dis-tinguishes the great candidates from the good candidates,” says Fogarty.
Be ConciseInterviewees ram-bling on is one of the most common inter-view blunders Foga-rty sees. “You really have to listen to the question, and answer the question, and an-swer it concisely,” he says. “So many peo-
ple can’t get this ba-sic thing down. You ask them a question, and they go off on a tangent. They might think you want to hear what they’re say-ing, but they didn’t answer your ques-tion.”
Provide ExamplesIt’s one thing to say you can do some-thing; it’s another to give examples of things you have done. “Come with a toolbox of examples of the work you’ve done,” advises Fogarty. “You should come and an-ticipate the questions a recruiter’s going to ask based on the requirement of the role. Think of recent strong strategic exam-ples of work you’ve done, then when the question is asked, an-swer with specifics, not in generalities. You should say, ‘Yes, I’ve done that before. Here’s an example of a time I did that…,’ and then come back
and ask the recruiter, ‘Did that answer your question?’”Be HonestSomehow, candidates get the impression that a good technique is to dance around dif-ficult interview ques-tions. “If you don’t have a skill, just state it. Don’t try to cover it up by talking and giving examples that aren’t relevant. You’re much better off saying you don’t have that skill but perhaps you do have some related skills, and you’re hap-py to tell them about that if they like.”
Keep Your Guard UpAccording to Fogarty, you can split recruit-ers into two schools. There are those who are very straight-laced and serious, and can-didates had better take the process seriously as well when dealing with them.“Then you have re-cruiters like me,” he says, chuckling. “I’m going to be that can-
didate’s best friend when they call me. My technique is to put them at ease, because I want them to tell me everything, and a lot of candidates mess up in this area. They start to think, ‘Oh, this guy is cool. I can tell him anything.’ And then they cross the line.” And that can take a candidate out of con-tention. Remember: Always maintain your professionalism.
Ask Great QuestionsAnother of Fogarty’s interview tips is to come ready with good questions to ask. He says nothing impress-es him more than a really good question that not only shows you’ve researched the company in general, but also the specific job you’re hoping to land in particular. “That makes me go, ‘Wow, this person has really done their homework. They not only know the company, but they know the role.’”
