Patents Hermetically sealing multiple optical fibres Applicant: Lightwave Microsystems Corp, USA This patent covers an apparatus and method to metallize, reinforce and hermetically seal multiple optical fibres. A ribbon of optical fibres are placed in a fixture to expose a mid-span segment in order to remove coatings from their surface by using acid etching or a laser technique. A variety of metallic coatings are then deposited onto the bare segment of the optical fibres. The metallized segment of fibres are then deposited, with a solderable alloy, onto a plate to enable them to be attached and reinforced by a metallized segment. The plate and metallized segment is then fed through a package opening and are hermetically sealed to internally connect one or more components inside the package by heating the package to melt additional solder around the opening or gap. The bearing device comprises a shaft. A sleeve forms a radial bearing part in the shaft’s clearance, and is installed in a rotatable fashion on the shaft. A pair of seal members are fixed to the shaft. These form a thrust bearing part in the clearance of the sleeve, and seal in the lubricating oil that circulates through the internal part of the bearing. A large diameter part is formed on the shaft as one of the pair of seal members, while the other seal member is press-fitted to the shaft. Patent number: WO 02/18804 Inventor: J. Nakamura Publication date: 7 March 2002 Bypass seal for heat exchanger Applicant: Honeywell International Inc, USA This invention is embodied in a heat exchanger, which allows differential thermal expansion of its elements while providing a bypass seal. In at least one embodiment, the heat exchanger includes a shell for containing a first gas, a core positioned within the shell and a seal positioned between the core and the shell. The seal allows at least some differential expansion between the shell and the core while restricting the flow of the first gas past the seal. This allows a space for expansion of the core to exist between the core and the shell, while preventing the first gas from bypassing the core by travelling through the expansion space. As such, the seal forces the first gas to pass through the core, greatly increasing heat transfer from the first gas to the core. Preferably, the seal is mounted in the core at a position at least adjacent to the free (moveable) end or ends of the core. The seal can be folded into several layers such that the folds abut both the core and the shell. When the core expands or contracts the seal is drawn apart (unfolded) or compacted (further folded), as the case may be. In another embodiment, the seal is made up of a single layer of material with sufficient slack between the core and the shell to allow the former to expand and contract separately from the shell. Ayres Publication date: 7 March 2002 Thermal barrier coatings for turbine components Applicant: Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp, USA A composite thermal barrier coating system includes a first composite thermal barrier coating over a portion of a substrate, and a second deposited thermal barrier coating over edge portions of the substrate. The first coating is relatively thick and preferably includes friable, graded insulation, comprising an abradable honeycomb metallic structure filled with high thermal expansion ceramic hollow spheres in a phosphate bonded matrix. The second deposited edge coating is relatively thin and is preferably composed of an electron beam physical vapour deposited thermal barrier coating comprising ZrO 2 and Y 2 O 3 . The friable, graded insulation may be manufactured to thicknesses in excess of the current thermal barrier coating systems, thereby imparting greater thermal protection. Superior erosion resistance and abrasion properties are also achieved. The composite thermal barrier coating system is useful on combustion turbine components such as ring seal segments, vane segment shrouds, transitions and combustors. It comprises specific amounts of an ethylene copolymer resin; a modified aromatic petroleum resin with a specific weight-average molecular weight that is obtained by copolymerizing a polymerizable ingredient contained in a fraction (resulting from the thermal cracking of petroleum hydrocarbons having a specific boiling point range, a specific vinyltoluene content, and a specific indene content), and phellandrene or turpentine oil containing a phellandrene. Also included is a phenol compound in a specific proportion with the aid of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and a wax. The composition has excellent thermal stability and improved high- temperature bonding properties. It is usable in sealants and adhesives or in hot-melt coating materials. The pipe coupling generally comprises a nipple part and a female part. The latter part accommodates the nipple part with a gasket disposed in the circular cavity. The nipple and female parts are clamped together by the clamp (with the cam of the clamp inserted into the groove of the nipple part). The gasket is provided with a V-shaped groove on its inside surface. It is also provided with a first inclined guide surface, and the groove is provided with a second correspondingly inclined guide surface so that the first inclined guide surface is engaged with the second, in order to clamp together the nipple and female parts.
