  • CCTV

    • Closed Circuit TeleVision (CCTV) • Most common method of condition assessment used for

    sewer mains

    • Occasionally used on water main for internal pipe condition assessment

    • Intrusive – requires access points for the CCTV vehicle – Sewer manholes – Water – Cut-ins or welded manholes

    • Relatively inexpensive (

    • Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) • Highly detailed pipe mapping • Occasionally used on water main for condition assessment • MFL tool can be

    – Attached to external pipe surface – Inserted through pipeline

    • Relatively slow and expensive process.

    • Linear Polarisation Resistance (LPR) • Soil testing is an indirect, non-invasive electrochemical

technique that can cost effectively deal with entire lengths of mains, without disrupting the operation of the mains.

    • Some say LPR analysis is able to predict the performance of sections of mains in combination with Envirostat and PipeFail algorithms as well as identify the condition of individual pipe lengths.

    • UltraSonic wall thickness (US) • Direct measurement of wall thickness from external pipe

    surface

    • NDT, rapid, easy to use technique • Good for steel, not so good for cast • Equipment is relatively inexpensive

    • Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) • Collaborative projects since 2007 on pipeline condition

    assessment

    • Practical research deliverables – software, guidelines, etc • Networking & knowledge sharing • Ensuring SA Water remains aware of best practices used in

    industry
