Vintage 1990Lawyer turned cigar mogul Rocky Patel seems to release a new outstanding cigar blend every time he turns around. DecadeAfter 10 years of making some of the best cigars on the market, Rocky Patel decided to celebrate. His idea of an anniversary party of course was blending a new cigar, and the Rocky Patel Decade was born. The blend starts with a beautiful Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, and then delves into a delicious mixture of binder and filler tobacco that Rocky keeps as his own secret to avoid copycats. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, Sam Leccia must be one flattered dude. No one had ever tried to make a cigar with the unique dimensions of the Nub before, but as soon as Nubs took off like a rocket ship, a slew of “short & fat” stogies flooded the market in its wake. The original is still the king, as the continued popularity proves in spades. These babies are all 58+ rings and under 4 1/2 inches, to deliver you just the “sweet spot” of the cigar. These smokes are no flash in the pan gimmick, they come with a bunch of advantages over more traditional sizes. The large gauge allows for a cooler smoke, easier draw, and a wider variety of tobacco to generate a more complex blend. Of course being blended by the geniuses at Oliva doesn’t hurt either. It’s no secret, the cigar industry is trending towards bigger and stronger smokes to satisfy the demands of smokers everywhere. Black MarketAlan Rubin and the Alec Bradley Cigar Company seem to have the Midas touch these days; every new blend they release is a winner. We’re thrilled to have another new offering for the holidays, the highly anticipated Black Market line. Don’t let the presentation fool you, between the dark Nicaraguan Jalapa wrapper and the intimidating foot band, this one looks like a powerhouse. It’s actually more on the medium-bodied side, featuring thick, creamy smoke and hints of sweetness and spice. Normally in this spot I’d be talking about all the ratings and critical acclaim this one racked up, but since it’s so new you’ll have to wait for a couple months to read the rave reviews from the critics. If they like this smoke half as much as I do there will be lots of them!

Calling your cigar an “American Classic” is a bold statement...But Alec Bradley is the kind of company who can back up bold statements with great smokes. This cigar more than lives up to its name, starting with the exquisite Connecticut shade wrapper and ending with a price that won't even make Joe Six-Pack blink. Flawless construction and a complex blend of the finest tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras truly make this one a classic. As for being American, if the old cliché about the country needing a good five cent cigar, adjusted for inflation these days to a good five dollar cigar, is still true, F.D.R. would be puffing proudly on this one.

The Alec Bradley SCR is a new blend that is meant to complement the Tempus line. Like the Tempus line, the SCR is made with Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers, it has an Indonesian binder, and a Honduran wrapper. Unlike the Tempus line, the Alec Bradley SCR uses leaves grown in their Trojes farm in Honduras. The soil profile there yields a slightly mellower flavor. This difference in soil makes the SCR a medium bodied wonder. More balanced, more complex, and a little lighter in flavor this line is a great medium bodied analogue to the Tempus. This cigar has fruit notes, some slight sweetness, wood and spice.

Undercrown

To say Drew Estate was wildly successful with their Liga Privada line is an understatement. The blend took the cigar world by storm, winning universal praise from critics and smokers alike.

Another group who fell in love with Liga Privada is the folks who roll them in the factory. They smoked so many that Drew Estate had to restrict the rollers from smoking Ligas due to the high demand and scarcity of the tobacco.

Rather than go on strike, the rollers responded by making a new blend to smoke on the factory floor, one made from different primings and vintages of the same tobaccos used in Liga Privada.

The end result was no knock-off, but a fantastic cigar that more than stands on its own. The blend was too good not to put into regular production for everyone, so Drew Estate did just that.

We’ve got a shelf full now, but I’m guessing there will be no restrictions on the rollers smoking these babies, so supplies will be limited.

Hot off the presses from the 2011 IPCPR trade show, the Gurkha Royal Challenge is another exciting new blend from the innovative and constantly evolving Beach Cigar Group. This release is highlighted by an Ecuadorian Connecticut-shade wrapper that is certainly fit for royalty.

You’ll get initial notes of spice and pepper, smoothing out as you puff into a delicious meld of butter and cream flavors that will keep you smoking until your fingers singe.

A stately mild-to-medium bodied cigar, this one pairs perfectly with your morning coffee or a lazy afternoon.

Undercrown

To say Drew Estate was wildly successful with their Liga Privada line is an understatement. The blend took the cigar world by storm, winning universal praise from critics and smokers alike.

Another group who fell in love with Liga Privada is the folks who roll them in the factory. They smoked so many that Drew Estate had to restrict the rollers from smoking Ligas due to the high demand and scarcity of the tobacco.

Rather than go on strike, the rollers responded by making a new blend to smoke on the factory floor, one made from different primings and vintages of the same tobaccos used in Liga Privada.

The end result was no knock-off, but a fantastic cigar that more than stands on its own. The blend was too good not to put into regular production for everyone, so Drew Estate did just that.

We’ve got a shelf full now, but I’m guessing there will be no restrictions on the rollers smoking these babies, so supplies will be limited.
