Piping or not piping

This is the question

Questions

• Do you need it?

• Is it what you think it is?

• Are you willing to spend resources on it?

• Is there an alternative?

Needs

General space reservationo Create object which represents a

“space reservation” for one or multiple pipes, flexible, conveyer belts, walk ways, cable trays, cables, cable bundles, wires, beam pipes etc.

Piping Designo Creates object representation of

single route of a pipe transporting fluid

Needs

General space reservationo Cross-section shape of the space

reservation may vary, is freely adjustable or exchangeable

Piping Designo One circular cross-section type of

a pipe with predefined standard diameters and bending rules

Needs

General space reservationo Geometry representing

connected objects do not have to be predefined standard parts from a catalog and the assisted part placement mechanism is not defined

Piping Designo Placement of pipe parts and

standard parts according to methodology. Placement of valve parts only from dedicated catalogue

Michal Mlynarcik

Needs

General space reservationo No need for multiple

representationso Not to be integrated with any

other specialized workbench

Piping Designo Special valve parts with multiple

representationso Close integration with HVAC and

Equipment Arrangement workbench

Needs

General space reservationo Eligible: pure mechanical

assembly, electrical models, integration models, any “fluid transportation” unrelated field

Piping Designo Eligible: cooling/heating

networks, hydraulic networks, fluid transportation pipes

Comparison example

Piping workbench• Special interface• Special training needed• Pipe diameters predefined• Only circular pipe section• Routing of runs• Predefined parts from catalog• Build in intelligence restrictions

and selection rules• Multiple representation of piping

parts• Insulation management

Part/Assembly workbench• Familiar interface• Regular or no training needed• Any size possible• Any section possible• Routing of 3D splines• Any parts• No intelligence rules or

restrictions• Part also can have multiple

representations• Manual insulation

Piping Workbench restrictions

Different interface from any workbench in CATIA Specialized training needed to work effectively Limited to predefined diameter of pipes Placemat of pipe part needed to receive full advantage of the workbench The ‘route’ of the pipe will be always assembled from straight sections and elbows

with diameter (not a spline or 3D curve) Only 1 circular section type of pipe profile available The workbench does not support constraints, the runs(pipes) are referenced to

absolute 0 of the product The pipe is not shown as hollow object (unlike real pipe) The placing of valves (piping parts) is managed by catalogue with limited content

(now only parts created by CV) The creation of parts must strictly follow dedicated methodology and will undergo

verification by CAD Support (not a simple CATPart) Limited support after November 2013

Alternatives

Part design– Ask us for Power Copy and knowledge templates help– Supported by CAD Support Service

If you insist: System Routing workbench– Routing of runs– Limited number of cross-section types– No part placement from workbench catalog catalog disabled– Unsupported

Or: Systems Space reservation– Routing of path reservation objects– Placing of item reservation objects “cubes”– No part placement from workbench catalog catalog disabled– Unsupported

There no other similar Equipment & Systems workbenches fully configured for now (HVAC and Equipment Arrangement coming in 2013)

Conclusions

If you still think Piping Design workbench is suitable for YOU then: Contact CAD Support service for further information– Dedicated work methodology is developed and available– Supported by CAD Support service– Is actively used by EN\CV-DOW which helped a lot to implement it

It is a highly specialized workbench, which is very useful if you use it correctly and in its scope.
