- A pirate is someone who takes control of a ship and robs it of its treasure.- Ancient pirates may have looked for Gold but today Pirates take Oil, TVs, Games consoles and anything worth money.- Can you Spot the difference between Ancient and Modern Pirates?

Captain Blackbeard• ‘Blackbeard’ was his

nickname – his real name was probably Edward Teach

• He lived about three hundred years ago

• He is the most famous real pirate

• He was very strong and very fierce

• He was married fourteen times

Calico Jack• Calico Jack had this

nickname because of what his shirts were made from! He was famous for wearing very fancy clothes and being very handsome. His real name was Jack Rackham

• He is famous for having two famous girl pirates on his ship.

• When the navy caught up with him, Calico Jack gave up without a fight

Pirate drinks

• Water tasted horrible. It was kept on board ship for a long time and it went bad very quickly

• Pirates drank drinks like rum that wouldn’t taste as horrible

• They sometimes mixed in lemon, ginger or nutmeg to make drinks taste better

1. Pirates carried parrots

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!The parrots were captured in South America and

carried back home. But they weren’t just cute pets – they could be sold for lots of money back in Britain.

2. Pirates stole gold and jewels

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!But soon ships with gold and jewels on them became too big and too well protected. Pirates started to steal things they could sell like sugar and cloth. They would steal food and clothes that they could use too!

3. Pirates made maps showing buried treasure

Answer: Never, me hearties!They shared the money and spent it quickly.

Captain Kidd may have hidden his treasure, but pirates didn’t want to leave their loot anywhere where someone else could find it! They may have hidden their treasure if they were being chased – but they

would go back to get it!

4. Pirates left shipmates on desert islands

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!If a pirate broke the rules they were ‘marooned’

– left on an island all by themselves! Rules were very important – just like at school!

5. Pirates had wooden legs and eye patches

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!Fighting hurts! If legs (or any other bit of you)

got hurt, there weren’t doctors and hospitals around to make you better – so if something went wrong, the sore parts were cut off! Eek!

6. Pirates flew skull and crossbones flags

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!But some stories say that there were flags with

other things on too – we don’t know if that bit is true or not!

7. Pirates made enemies walk the plank

Answer: Never, me hearties!Pirates never wasted their time with planks!

There is a story that Black Bart made someone walk the plank once, but it is probably just that – a story!

8. Pirates sent their enemies a black spot to say they were coming to get them

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!A circle of paper was cut out and covered in

black ink. The circle was sent to someone the pirates didn’t like. It was a warning sent to scare them!

9. Pirates wore fancy clothes, black beards and curly wigs

Answer: Aye, Mr Dillon!They liked stealing fancy clothes and, if they fitted, they wore

them. Most of the time, their clothes were a bit scruffy, because they didn’t wash very often and they couldn’t always find new ones when they wore out. Blackbeard grew a long tangled beard just to look scary.
