Vapors and GasesEnsure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of thework space.

SubstrateThe substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre‐treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Processing TemperatureWhen materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processingtemperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may notbe exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting inmalfunctioning or unit failure.

Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced duringbreaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the materialconsumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature forhigh material consumption and lower for lower consumption.

When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heatand the ambient temperature; cool if necessary.

Function

The following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of a pistonpump within a complete system.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) conveythe substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photo cell(10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. Thecontroller compiles all the data according to the speed of the productionmachine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transportequipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per mm. The control unitevaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the applicators (5)must be activated.

The piston pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). Itoperates continuously and pumps the adhesive from the adhesive reservoir (11) to the applicators (5).

A current between 0‐20 mA is supplied from the control unit (3) to theproportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current isdependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of thecurrent determines how far the proportional pressure control valve (2) shouldbe opened and the adhesive pressure regulator (9) opens accordingly. Theadhesive flows to the applicators (5) and is applied to the substrate. Thelength of the application is defined by the controller’s program.

Operation

Initial Startup

1. Shut off the compressed air supply on the piston pump (12, Fig. 1).

2. Activate the compressed air supply to the piston pump.

3. Open the piston pump compressed air regulator slightly to supply thesystem with compressed air slowly.

4. Regulate the compressed air on the piston pump so that the adhesivepressure at the adhesive pressure regulator inlet is always greater thanthe required adhesive pressure at the adhesive pressure regulator outlet(working pressure of the adhesive).

5. Activate (spray) all the applicators connected to the adhesive pressureregulator until adhesive flows smoothly and without any air bubbles.

NOTE: To vent the system more efficiently, remove the nozzles or nozzleplates first of all and replace them, as necessary, later.

6. Position the substrate under the applicator, carry out a test adhesiveapplication and check the adhesive bead. If the bead is too thin, increasethe pressure on the piston pump.

CAUTION: Do not work with excessive pressure. Excessive pressure canchange the adhesive’s properties. Also observe safety instructions from theadhesive manufacturer.

7. Check all connections for any leakage, tighten as necessary.

CAUTION: The system must be depressurized before any maintenancework is performed or changes are made to the system. Then set thecontroller to "Purge." This allows the pressure to escape through the purgingvalve and the applicators.
