Magazine Name• ‘SONIC’• Reasons: This will be the name of my

magazine because it is short and easy to remember, making for a good brand identity. It uses a limited amount of syllables, which is common in names such as ‘NME’ ’Kerrang’ and ‘Q’, this makes it easy to say and more likely to come up in conversation. ‘Sonic’ is also musical lexis. This technical language will make the reader think of professionalism in regards to this magazine.

Genre(s)

• Indie (Rock/Pop).• Reasons: 50% of the demographic put Indie music at the top

of their preferred genres, while 23% chose Rock and 13% chose Pop. 35% placed Electronic/Dance music in their top three, while 32% placed Hip Hop/Rap in the top three. This means that these genres will still feature, but will not be of priority. The magazine will treat ‘indie’ as a genre as well as a culture; so independent artists will be honoured as well as those attached to larger labels but act under the ‘indie’ tag. As well as this, broadcasting indie music allows for a wide variation, as this includes a broad spectrum of sub-genres, including indie rock and indie pop to name a few. Indie is also very popular within both the younger and older generations, creating a larger audience.

Issue Frequency• Monthly (+ A seasonal overview) (16 issues a year). • 71% of the demographic said they would prefer a monthly magazine.

For this reason, my magazine will be monthly, however, for the 29% that said weekly, there will be an extra issue at the end of each season, making 16 issues a year.

Price• 70% of the respondents said they would be willing to pay between £3

and £4 for each issue; because 25% said they would only pay between £1 and £2, the cover price would be set at £2.60 to make the price seem fairer on both sides.

• Over the course of a year this would cost £41.60, however for an annual subscription, there would be a discount so it would cost £35. This a lower price to magazines like Q, for example, allowing this magazine to reach people with a lower disposable income, meaning a wider audience is available.

Style & Attitude/Mission Statement

• ‘SONIC’ will take on a professional style to give the audience a feeling of trust and quality when reading the magazine. Despite this, the magazine does not want to deter people who aren’t as serious about music but still have the passion for it; for this reason, ‘SONIC’ will limit the use of technical language where appropriate.

• The aim of ‘SONIC’ will be to provide reliable and sourced information about upcoming artists, as well as artists in the limelight of indie, rock and pop scenes. The magazine will always look to the future in terms of musicians to inspire readers and give independent, hard working artists the exposure they deserve. ‘SONIC’ will keep the pages calm and aesthetically pleasing to engage readers. An inviting and simple brand identity will be established through themes of black, white and grey, reflecting the honesty of the words on the page.

Reader Profile• Niall, 17, is an avid music listener and has a passion for chilling

out to his favourite artists. When he is not working, hanging out with friends or at college, he winds down with the things he loves: football and music. His job allows him to purchase new indie music when he discovers the next big thing, or even invest in some of the classics. As well as using his iPhone to download new music, he spends a lot of time checking his newsfeed for the latest statuses or sending out a tweet to his like-minded followers. He idolizes the rockstar lifestyle of The Killers’ frontman, Brandon Flowers, his agile vocals and LA scenery tempt Niall from his average surroundings in the Yorkshire suburbs.
