MAKING HIS MARKAnthony Marklund, M.AIRAH, is principal ESD engineer for Floth Sustainable Building Consultants, based in the rm’s Brisbane HQ.Responsibilities I lead, develop and project manage our ESD services. Driving the sustainable design process, I communicate and collaborate with clients, architects, contractors, other consultants and colleagues to design and deliver Green Star, NABERS, WELL and other ESD certifications and services for our commercial, mixed-use, hotel, healthcare, education and other diverse projects.

PassionsI am passionate about keeping at the forefront of sustainable design, which essentially boils down to learning, practicing and sharing knowledge. Seeing the completed buildings work as intended, and being a part of a more sustainable future. I also really enjoy talking with school and university students and contributing to a number of industry peak-body working groups such as the Property Council of Australia Qld Chapter Committee for Cities, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineer UK’s Sustainability Committee and the Green Building Council of Australia’s Technical Advisory Group.

Finest professional hourIt would have to be receiving the 2016 World Green Building Council Asia Pacific Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance – Commercial Category Award for Floth Head Offices at the Green Building Congress in Mumbai.

Important lessons Maintaining tenacity for your professional practice, which is essentially driven by a core integral belief that you are contributing to better building practices.

Whom do you most admire? Two years ago I was exceptionally fortunate to meet the late Dr Prem C Jain, the founder of ISHRAE and long-serving chairman of the IGBC (Indian Green Building Council), who left a profound impression on me. Deeply involved with IGBC from its inception in 2001, Jain was a driving force in the development of the 21st  century

green building movement in India. Over 4,790 green building, village and city projects adopted IGBC rating systems under his visionary leadership. In person he had this amazing warmth and was still firing on all cylinders at the age of 80 – I have never felt as much in the presence of greatness.

Dream sabbaticalAn expedition to the International Space Station, perhaps to improve engineering services systems efficiencies and/or implement health and wellbeing initiatives for occupants. From out there, the limits of our world must surely be tangible – maybe if everyone got to see it from that perspective, we might all treat it, and our cohabitants, better.

What is your motto? This used to be “Work hard, play harder”, but the latter seems to have fallen into disrepair … In terms of quotes, at the moment I quite like “We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.” – Winston Churchill.

Greatest personal achievementAside from getting this far in family and life in general, this might be crossing the 5,416m Thorong La Pass in the Nepalese Himalayas. I would love to go back and trek Mera Peak.

Favourite bookI can’t remember a clear favourite, but I’m currently really enjoying reading the Harry Potter novels to my eldest daughter.

Favourite filmThat’s a real hard one as I am a sci-fi ragic. Can I say the original Star Wars trilogy? If I had to pick one of them it would be The Empire Strikes Back, which also happens to be my eldest daughter’s favourite (no collusion here). Aliens is also up there. Out of the Star Trek movies, Star Trek First Contact.

Favourite websitePsychedelik.com, an electronic music streaming site that I listen to most days when out walking or running.

Describe yourselfI didn’t know how to answer this, so asked my girls for help. My eldest daughter said, “Funny, likes TV, reading the news on the Ipad, bacon and eggs, Mum’s cooking, laying in the hammock and going to the park on our bicycles. My youngest added, “Likes engineering.” I guess I would describe myself as … looking forward to the summer holidays.

Define successAchieving what you set out to.

What does AIRAH membership mean to you?Opportunities to learn, share and contribute to the furtherment of mechanical building services in Australia. ❚
