TRANSCRIPT

RAVDEEP JANDU

TREATMENT

INTENTIONS

What is the documentary setting out to be –

• I am challenging the key effects to the London riots and if it was because of the killing of Mark Duggan.

• I will be exploring the key moments of the controversy which shook the UK

• I will be investigating the events that took place during the riots and why it took so long to bring it under control

• I am proving that the underlying issue was not just the killing of Mark Duggan that made people riot

How will you do this?

• I will undertake interviews with people that were involved in the riots to understand why they participated

• My angle on this documentary will be to explain how the riots began and why the government failed to act and why the police lost control

CONTENT OF IDEA

• Topic - The topic of this production will be the London Riots. The reason why I have chosen this is because I would like to find out why people were involved in it.

• Angle - The angle for the Riots will be finding out why people destroyed many shops and homes around England and what will happen to the people that were involved in it.

• Unique Selling point – I find my documentary unique as there has been no documentaries have been released about it so far, also many people would like to see more about it, what really happened and why people looted and destroyed places.

• Arguments and debates – There will be many debates that I will include on this documentary, I will find out why the police did not do enough as they showed weakness.

• How will they do this – I will include this in my documentary, by showing this outside of Scotland Court Yard and also ask the officers some questions.

STRUCTURE & RUNNING ORDER

• Segment 1 (Introduction) – Zoom out from Tottenham hale station as I will appear in the scene and talk

about the day it had all started.

• Segment 2 – There will be images and headlines lighting up focusing on that, with past reports in the

background, there will be echoes to show a suspense effect. I will then add a small piece of music

which will play apart of the suspense effect.

• Segment 3 – I appear on the camera again walking down Ferry Road, and asking a question, it will then

become a vox pop with different people sharing their opinions on the riots.

• Segment 4 – The camera will again appear on me right at the location where Mark Duggan was killed.

• Segment 5 – I will then have an interview the Tottenham MP, David Lammy. (hopefully)

• Segment 6 – Showing some archive footage of the rioting and also from a helicopters point of view

• Segment 7 – I will then try and speak with a person that was involved with the rioting and see his point of

view on why he decided to loot.

• Segment 8 – I will then have a cutaway and see how some of the effected businesses are doing from

the outside, showing how they have settled down

• Segment 9 – Have an interview with a store manager from a shop and see how they are coping now

from the riots and how much loss they had

• Segment 10 – I will end the documentary with a question.

PROFILE OF TARGET AUDIENCE AND

APPEAL OF YOUR IDEA

• Age - The age will be from 16-24 years old.

• Gender - The gender will be both male and female as not only males were involved in the riots.

• Location - This will be located around the effected areas in London

• Interests - They will be interested in listening to rap music as it mostly connotes violence. Also various other genres.

• Employment status - Most of the audience will not be employed as they will be attending school or college, however, some people that are studying at university may have a part time job.

• Socio Economic Group - For this documentary, this will be from C2-E, shows the majority of the audience have a normal 9-5 job, and also some people do not work as they are at school or they are uneducated.

• Ethnicity - There will be a vast amount of ethnicities that will be interested in watching this documentary as this effects everyone in the UK. Also this will appeal to them because every ethnicity was involved in the riots. From white, black, Asian etc.

• Media Consumption - The audience will be interested in watching Ross Kemp on gangs as this is a documentary about criminals in different countries, or panorama which comes on BBC.

• Niche or Mainstream – Mainstream, because this was a serious issue which was published around the world, many people would want to share their thoughts.

EXPLANATION OF RESEARCH AND KEY

research

LEGAL & REGULATORY

CONSIDERATIONS

Media Law

Defamation

This could effect my work because if the family of Mark Duggan see it in a bad way, it will not look

very good on myself and the school.

Copyright – I will ensure that none of my content is copyright infringed from any organisations. I

must contact for use of content.

OFCOM

Potential Offensive Material – This will effect my work as the audience will respond to my work

differently and vigorously.

Criminality – As my documentary will be about the London riots, this will show a lot of criminal acts,

however I must be careful with the content that I will included within the filming, this could be due

to parental advisory, otherwise I may be sued by the consumers.

Re-constructions – Under re-constructions, when filming dangerous scenes, such as crime scenes, I

will have to make this viewable towards my audience, so therefore I may have to re-enact them

BBC GUIDELINES

• Truth and Accuracy - This will affect my work if something has been

accused of Mark Duggan or that has been interoperated the wrong way which will involve his family.

• Fairness - This could affect my work if I listen to one story and say that it

was the Police did not do anything to stop the riots and did not do enough.

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY

The market

• Ross Kemp on Gangs – This is a documentary/program that will be

on the same market area as my documentary as they are both

about violence. However, Ross Kemp on Gangs being a life

threatening program for the casting a crew.

• I think my documentary will be unique to the one on the Ross

Kemp, because this is about a serious cause. To make sure I can

make it different, I will add things that will make it entertaining

such as music and video games. This will draw more attention to

the audience as most people at that age will play video games.

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY

The budget

• We were given a hypothetical budget of £7500, this included travel expenses, interviewees, food for the crew and the editing stages of the production. At the end of the budget, I was left with £2790 which shows that I have more than enough money to make my documentary to a good standard.

• However, the REAL budget will be more realistic to this, I will mostly be using travel expenses and food. The travel expenses will be cheap because I will only be travelling on the underground as I will visit places such as, Tottenham Hale and Hackney.

• I feel that my documentary will be a good value for money because it will inform the audience about what really happened in the Riots, I will also hold an interview with someone that was involved in the looting.

• I will fulfil the BBC ethos by:

• Informing people about the cause of the London riots and why so many people wanted to come out and prove a point, and also why it dragged on to places such as Manchester.

• Entertaining by using music in the background, preferably rap music, as this is what influences people in becoming violent or taking drugs. Another way will be by showing people playing video games as this is what most 16-24 year olds would do.

• Educate people by making something of themselves and being mature, independent and proving people wrong about stereo typing the younger generation

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY

• If my documentary was to be broadcast on Television, it would be shown on a Thursday night at 9PM,

the reason for this is because there are not many well-known programs on the terrestrial channels, and

by having this documentary on will grab the audiences attention as they would like to know a lot more

about the riots and it is not something rubbish that is on TV. Most of the programs that will be on at this

time will all be dramas.
