'Fed Up,' causes a st ir

C laud ia P u i g .v.U;'Eji.mc

PARK CITY, UTAH Katie Couric is fed up.

Like the title of the documentary she produced and narrated says, Couric is angry about the ^obal epidemic of childhood obesity and the government's role in its spread

"The amount of attention paid to public health is minuscule compared to the amount of attention the government pays to promoting agriculture," Couric says.

One of the most talked-about films at Sundance, Fed Up is described as the film that the food industry doesn't want people to see.

And it could be the movie that will change the way people think about eating.

The documentary about the

alarming spread of cmionouu obesity, directed by Stephanie Soechtig and executive-produced by Couric and Laurie David, was acquired for worldwide distribution by RADiUS-TWC.

It details how, since the government issued its first dietary guidelines 30 years ago, the rate of obesity has skyrocketed. Generations of kids will live shorter lives than their parents. The film upends the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and lays bare the misinformation put forth on how to lose it. It reveals that far more people get sick from what they cat than anyone realized. And it traces the history of processed foods adding sugar and sweeteners to their ingredients.

"One in three kids by midcen-tury in this country are going to have type 2 diabetes," David says, " I could cry just saying that to you." Adds Couric: " I n 1980, zero kids had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It used to be considered adult-onset diabetes. And by 2010, it was close to 57.000."

Fed Up intersperses stories of

the efforts of several overweight kids fitting an uphill battle to lose w e i ^ t using traditional diet and exercise methods. Among them are a 12-year-old girl v/bo weighs 212 pounds and a 15-year-old, 250-pound boy.

" I t was very difficult to cast, because you're dealing with minors and with teenagers who are incredibly insecure, and you're asking them to talk about something so personal," director Soechtig says. T h e y were so candid."

Couric hopes the film will bring about amended personal habits and public policies. T think it will change the way people buy food. It will change the way they consume food, and it will change the way they think about food." she says.

The hope is that a shift can occur, as it has in other health and safety arenas. "My brother and I used to flush my mom's cigarettes down the toilet when we realized that they were so hazardous to her health," Couric says. "And I think we can inspire a whole movement by kids for kids."
