Walaupun Indonesia dan Australia bertetangga dekat, hubungan kedua negaratersebut tidak selalu hangat dan tidak menentu. Misalnya, pada sekitar tahun1945, setelah Jepang menyerah dan sebelum Republik Indonesia berdiri secarakuat, Australia di bawah sekutu mengembalikan beberapa bagian Indonesiakepada Belanda. Di lain pihak, pada tahun 1947 Australia adalah salah satunegara yang memberikan suara yang cukup keras kepada Persatuan Bangsa-Bangsa (PBB) supaya bangsa Indonesia memperoleh kemerdekaannya.

Dukungan ini tidak hanya diberikan oleh pemerintah saja, tetapi juga diberikanoleh sebagian besar rakyat Australia. Sebagai contoh 'waterside workers'Australia mengadakan larangan transportasi terhadap semua kapal Belanda.

Walaupun pada masa ini banyak orang menggambarkan bahwa hubungan keduanegara tersebut sangat bersahabat, bisa dikatakan hal itu tidak seratus persenbenar. Sebuah artikel di koran Sydney Morning Herald pada tahun 1986,menghina kepala negara Indonesia dengan mengatakan bahwa presiden Suhartodan keluarganya korupsi. Hal ini mengakibatkan larangan kunjungan menteri-menteri Australia ke Indonesia untuk beberapa saat. Dan juga beberapawisatawan Australia yang berkunjung ke Bali dikembalikan ke Australia. Tetapihubungan itu tampaknya membaik pada tahun 1989 dengan kunjungan jendralTry Sutrisno ke Australia. Ini merupakan kunjungan pertama dari PanglimaAngkatan Bersenjata Republik Indonesia sejak 20 tahun.

Tampaknya pada akhir-akhir ini perbedaan antara kedua negara tersebut semakinberkurang dengan adanya perkembangan kerja sama di bidang perdagangan danpendidikan.

Mantan Perdana Menteri Australia, Paul Keating, dan Menteri Luar Negerinya,Gareth Evans, mampu membangun kerja sama yang baik dengan Indonesia. Halini didukung oleh persahabatan yang cukup baik antara Paul Keating danpresiden Suharto.

Melihat dari hal-hal di atas kelihatannya hubungan antara Australia danIndonesia mulai dekat dan prospek untuk perkembangan masa depan mulaicerah.
