A Tribute
Bhagat Phool Singh ji, born on 24 March 1885, in a peasant family at village Mahra, district Sonipat,
Bhagat Phool Singhji was by all standards a noble soul. After his schooling, he joined the Government
Service as a Patwari (revenue official) but left it after a short stint, with a mission to emancipate and
empower the weak, vulnerable and suffering humanity living in villages. His main focus was on women
education. He was a visionary in the real sense and the maker of modern Haryana. He propagated love,
compassion, peace and understanding until the enemies of these noble values cut short his life and
assassinated him on 14th August 1942.
The legacy of Bhagat Phool Singhji continued with his daughter Subhashini ji (1914-2003) taking over the
reigns of ‘The Gurukul’. Acknowledging her commitment to the upliftment of women, the Government of
India conferred on Subhashini ji the Padama Shri award in 1976 for Social Work.

The University
The Genesis
Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya is the manifestation of the dream seen by the legendary,
saintly figure Bhagat Phool Singh ji, 90 years ago in 1919. The seed sown in pre- independence era has
grown into a fully bloomed tree sprouting its branches towards empowerment and emancipation of girls.
Emulating the Philosophical dynamics of Arya Samaj, a Gurukul was established in 1919 at Bhainswal
Kalan, a small sleepy village, about 10 kilometers from Gohana, a sub-division of district Sonipat. It was
christened as Gurukul Bhainswal. Bhagat Phool Singh ji was a visionary; he could sense the importance of
girl’s education and consequently established another Gurukul, exclusively for girls at Khanpur Kalan in
1936. Notwithstanding the vehement opposition to Bhagat Phool Singhji’s endeavor to educate girls,
Gurukul Khanpur Kalan, turned out to be a ‘Mecca’ for girls’ education. Barring few non progressive
sections of society, everybody including the eminent personalities like Sir Chhotu Ram of that time helped
in evolving Gurukul Khanpur Kalan into a centre of excellence for girls’ education. Shri Bhupinder Singh
Hooda , the Chief Minister of Haryana has extraordinary interest in women’s Education and upgraded the
erstwhile Gurukul to the status of a University exclusively for women in August 2006, the first Women
University in North India.
The University is the first Women University in North India and the only women, rural, multi faculty,
