The genesis of the TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a not-for-
profit independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development. TERI was established in 1974, and by 1982 it had initiated research activities in the fields of Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development. These activities provided environment-friendly platforms to address a host of issues ranging from rural energy issues, to shaping the development of the Indian oil and gas sector, tackling global climate change across the continents, enhancing forest conservation efforts among local communities, advancing solutions to growing urban transport and air pollution problems and promoting energy efficiency in the Indian industry. TERI has come a long way and is now a dynamic organization with a staff strength of over 1000, drawn from multidisciplinary and highly specialized fields. Its offices and regional centres, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, are involved in a diverse range of activities. TERI is the largest developing-country institution working to move society towards a sustainable future through training, capacity building and education. Recognized as a deemed university by the University Grants Commission in 1999, the higher

The academic programmes of the University integrate the research experience gained in TERI into the academic curricula to provide a practical and contemporary context to learning. Having begun with doctoral programmes in 2001, TERI University has gone on to offer various masters degrees since 2003. The doctoral programmes and research centre around four basic themes: natural resources management, biotechnology, policy & regulation, and energy & environment. About 100 students are currently enrolled in the doctoral programmes and 600 in the master’s programmes. The M Sc programmes (Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management) started with the setting up of the Department of Natural Resources through an endowment from the Ford Foundation. These programmes are now in their tenth year. In 2005, the University was entrusted with the task of introducing a master’s programme in Public Policy and Sustainable Development for mid-career civil servants of the Government of India; the first batch of students was enrolled in January 2006. The year also saw the first batch of students inducted into the new MBA programme in Infrastructure. This is a unique programme catering to the growing infrastructure demands envisaged for India and has been supported by chairs from the National Thermal Power Corporation and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. In 2009, the University has launched four new master’s programmes – an M Sc in Climate Science and Policy, an M Sc in Economics, an MBA in Business Sustainability, and an M Tech in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management. In 2010, an MA programme in Sustainable Development Practice was launched. This is supported by the MacArthur Foundation. TERI
University was one of the 10 institutions chosen worldwide, by the Foundation, for support. The TERI University was, recently, awarded the India Today award for the most innovative curriculum. CollaborationsIn February 2002, TERI University entered into a memorandum of understanding with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of the yale University. Since 2005, with support from the VK Rasmussen Foundation, there has been a regular exchange of faculty and students between the two universities. The TERI University also has MoUs with the University of Iceland, Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, and Freie University, Berlin. These inter-institutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating a mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources, and ideas.
The Road AheadThe TERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet the needs of a rapidly developing India. , While it draws strength from the ethos and traditions of India, as a global institution it reaches out to source knowledge from across the globe. Its key strength also lies in the reservoir of knowledge, experience and research of the parent body, TERI. TERI University has, since October 2008, been operating from its energy-efficient, green campus at Vasant Kunj in New Delhi. TERI University is a unique institution of higher learning that benefits from the enormous range of cutting edge research carried out by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The challenge of improving the environment, both at the local and global levels is an issue that is increasingly engaging the attention of corporate organizations in India and abroad and, of course, governments and civil society in general. TERI University’s MSc programmes are designed specifically to help organizations, particularly in the corporate sector, meet challenges that are emerging throughout the world, with emphasis on emerging public attitudes and regulatory regimes for protecting the environment. These programmes are also of great value to the scientific community, policy-makers, as well as representatives of civil society. Given the practical orientation of all the work that TERI carries out, the University’s programmes are necessarily interdisciplinary in nature and focus on problem solving. Students who graduate would, therefore, be uniquely qualified to undertake major initiatives in the efficient management of natural resources and the prevention of environmental pollution. TERI University’s programmes equip students to solve problems in these fields at source rather than through end-of pipe interventions. These save costs and result in longer-term benefits for the organizations concerned and for society at large.
R K Pachaurichancellor, TERI University
TERI University aims to create a workforce that is empowered to better align sustainability considerations in the pursuit of economic growth and human well being. For doing so, we ensure that the enormous learning we have from TERI on the diverse, yet inter-related, aspects of Sustainable Development, enhanced with the research and knowledge of our own faculty members, is used to create cutting edge, inter-disciplinary curricula. This curriculum also benefits from a continuous feedback from academic peers at the national and global levels, from the employers of our students and from the students themselves – resulting in refined content and pedagogy on an annual basis. The active engagement of international faculty members and guest lecturers, along with the presence of international students on campus, ensures that TERI University student not only qualifies as a “sustainability professional” but is also comfortable in a multi-cultural setting. With a set of identifiable areas of domain expertise, these students have the unique advantage of appreciating the roles and contributions of different disciplines in finding solutions for complex real-life challenges. Engagement with research projects, industry exposure and field visits – including, in some cases, international exchanges – all contribute to the making of these well-rounded individuals who are seeking to engage usefully with global development processes. We are sure that you will appreciate the value that TERI University students bring to the workforce and will, while deploying them productively in your organization, encourage them to hone their skills further for the greater good. We would, of course, at all times value any feedback that you would like to offer us.
