    Indian Institute of Management Shillong takes great pride in announcing the

    completion of the Final Placements process for the 4th batch of the flagship Post-Graduate Program in Management (PGPM). Out of a batch of 104 participants, 2participants opted out of the placement process to start their own entrepreneurialventures. A total of 52 companies confirmed their presence on campus for theprocess and a total of 39 companies made offers. 6 other companies inducting IIMShillong into its campus evaluation and engagement process for the next academicyear stands testimony to the fact that IIM Shillong, into its sixth year of operation,is no more a new IIM and is making rapid progress. This success comes amidstfears of global recession and unfavorable economic conditions.

    Carrying on wit h last years trend, 2012 -13 saw a successful placement season asthe participants of the Class of 2013 set out to pitch their skills across organizations,industries and sectors. The IIM Shillong fraternity expresses its gratitude to all therecruiters, regular and new, for their undaunted support throughout therecruitments process. Despite a 13% increase in the batch -size, it is the immenseconfidence shown by our recruiters that has played a crucial role in offering

    participants a wide choice in terms of the kind of roles being offered across variousdomains and sectors.

    The Class of 2013 comprised participantsfrom diverse backgrounds with a vibrantmix of participants with no formal workexperience and participants with workexperience ranging from 2 to 48 months,

    and this facilitated us to attract manyrst-time recruiters on campus.Participating companies came fromdifferent geographies, both nationaland international, with offers for amultitude of roles and responsibilities.Owing to the quality of work experience in the class of 2013, several companiesmade multiple offers across functions, with participants being offered middle andsenior management positions.

    This years placement process saw an overwhelming participation from newrecruiters with most of them recruiting from campus in large numbers. Mostprominent amongst those who participated are JP Morgan Chase, Ranbaxy,Citibank, Robert Bosch and Dr. Reddys. The African arm of a Singapore basedFMCG major, has also recruited from IIM Shillong. These brands along with ourregular recruiters like TAS, Deloitte, HSBC, Apollo, GSK, Nomura amongst othersround up a successful placements season. Participants were suitably rewarded fortheir performance during summer internships with more than 10% of the batchsecuring PPO/PPIs. With every academic year, there is a bigger emphasis on theimportance of Summer Internships by companies as well as students as it acts as a

    gateway to secure a dream offer for the candidates and the companies get toevaluate the performance of candidates before making a final selection. With anincrease in our batch size y-o-y we are expecting the number of PPI/PPO to go upin the coming years.

    Aided by the fact that this year saw the BPO/KPO firms showing a great potentialand growth in business, organizations like Infosys BPO and WNS Global services

    made multiple offers across domains. Candidates were keen to explore career

    paths which were a little different from the norm and were helped in their courseby niche consulting/investment firms and a well-known firm offering the role of anExecutive Assistant to the CEO.

    Finance emerged as the most preferred domain on campus with 29% of the batchopting for a career in Finance. This is followed by Sales & Marketing, with 21% of

    the batch opting for a career in this domain. Highlight of the season includes 10%of the participants opting for a career in sunrise sectors like Pharma, Healthcare, E-Commerce and Education. This is the clear reflection of the success of case-basedpedagogy that encourages classroom discussions on various national andinternational business scenarios.

    CONSULTING/ GENERAL MANAGEMENT/ STRATEGY

    A significant number of participants in the batch have secured roles in GeneralManagement and Business Strategy. This domain witnessed participation fromconglomerates like TAS and Mahindra GMC. These conglomerates along withother prominent companies like Ranbaxy and Robert Bosch have offered GeneralManagement roles for their respective Leadership Programmes. Amongst theplethora of options available on Campus for Business Strategy roles, Dr. Reddysand Daimler were the most prominent ones.

    The Consulting domain attracted a good number of participants from the batch

    and emerged as a function of choice. This year saw a remarkable increase in thenumber of consulting companies participating in the recruitment process at IIMShillong. Deloitte led from the front and PricewaterhouseCoopers, Actuate BusinessConsulting and I-Maritime among others were the other business consultingcompanies that offered roles in this domain at IIM Shillong. This year saw an

    increase in the number of students opting to work with niche and newer consultingfirms focusing on specific sectors.

    FINANCE

    For the third time in a row, IIM Shillong is the regional champion of the GlobalInvestment Research Challenge (GIRC), conducted by the CFA institute. Riding onthe successes in the GIRC Summit, IIM Shillong has established itself as one of the

    premier finance destinations in the country. Organizations like NomuraInvestments, Citibank, HSBC, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and SBI Capital offered roles intheir Investment Banking, Equity Research, Consumer Banking, Project Advisoryand Capital Markets divisions.

    SALES & MARKETING

    This domain is unique in a way that it has seen participation from companies

    belonging to many different sectors like FMCG, Pharma, Automobile, Education,IT, Consumer Durables, Media & Entertainment. Companies like Tata Steel,Brandcare, GSK, Pidilite Industries, Network 18 have participated in the recruitmentprocess and offered roles like Brand Management, Business Development, B2BMarketing and Value Sales. This domain also witnessed participation on theinternational front. The African arm of a Singapore based FMCG major has offereda senior level role in Brand Management and has recruited numbers from IIMShillong.

    OPERATIONS & SUPPLY CHAIN

    13% of the batch was offered diverse range of profiles across Supply ChainManagement, Logistics and Hospital Operations, Manufacturing Operations,Product Development and Project Management. The Operations domainwitnessed participation from major companies like Apollo Hospitals, ManipalGroup, TVS Logistics and WNS Global Services.

    IT/ANALYTICS & HR

    A large number of participants from IIM Shillong chose a career in IT/Analytics.Some of the leading companies like JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft and FidelityManagement & Research amongst others offered roles like Business Analyst andProgram Manager. Myriad opportunities were available for the batch in whichalmost one-third of the candidates had prior experience in IT/ITES sector. Majorityof them opted for middle and senior level management roles in various companieslike Cognizant, Infosys and Mu-Sigma amongst others which offered roles likeBusiness Development Manager, Business Analyst and Technical Analyst.

    Close to 5% of the batch opted for roles in Human Resource (HR) Management aswell. The companies that offered roles in the field of HR included ONGC, Titan andLarsen & Toubro amongst others.

    ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE ROAD LESS TAKEN

    There were many students who decided to join start-ups to venture intounexplored territories and test their entrepreneurial abilities. Students from IIMShillong were willing to experiment with going for better roles than bigger brands.Two of our candidates opted out of placements to pursue a venture on their own.

    number of brands recruiting from IIM Shillong, despite uncertain global economic conditions, stands testimony to the potential andskill levels of the participants at IIM Shillong. While I am extremely

    proud of the placement team for their hard work, I would also liketo thank participating organizations for their continuous supportand making the IIM Shillong Final Placements a grand success.With able guidance from the Faculty and support from Alumni

    THE ROAD AHEAD

    The 2013 placements season has culminated with a grand success. As theparticipants of the Class of 2013 are all set to contribute meaningfully in thecorporate world as budding managers and tomorrows leaders, helping IIMShillong carve out its own niche, the Class of 2014 prepares itself to create newrecords and set high standards. We look forward to partnering once again with allour recruiters as well as establish relationships with new recruiters. The entire IIMShillong fraternity is eager to continue the symbiotic relationship between IIMShillong and the Corporates.

    Indian Institute of Management, Shillong successfully completed the summer

    placements for its fifth batch, PGP 2012-14, with 109 students placed with 51companies. With an average work experience of 24 months and variedbackgrounds ranging from Arts, Commerce, Engineering and HotelManagement, the students were able to meet the requirements of the recruitersand were well versed with the latest industry trends and developments.

    Despite the uncertain economic environment more than 50 companies confirmedtheir participation with IIM Shillong to tap the vast talent available here. At theheart of this success, is the unflinching support from the regular recruiters of thisinstitute as well as from the plenty of new recruiters. Without their backing andconviction this would have been very challenging to achieve. A diverse range ofprofiles were offered across various domains.

    Many new corporate houses including TAS, Mahindra GMC, Amazon, Britannia,Flipkart, and Renault Nissan offered different roles to students from IIM Shillong.The first time recruiters were impressed by the academic excellence of thecandidates and the curriculum offered. The diverse talent pool, enthusiasm andknowledge base of the students made IIM Shillong one of the most preferredcampuses among recruiters.

    This season saw a remarkable increasein the number of companies offeringGeneral Management, CorporateStrategy and Consulting roles ascompared to the previous year. TAS,

    Mahindra, Aditya Birla Group, RobertBosch, Siemens were some of the bignames who offered roles to theparticipants in this domain.PricewaterhouseCoopers offered nicheroles in Technology Consulting.

    Finance emerged as one of the most sought after domains at IIM Shillong whichaccounted for 31% of the offers. Prominent organizations like HSBC, DBS, ICICI,RBI and Adani Group were among the many other recruiters who offered roles inFinance to the participants. In the Finance domain profiles like Corporate Finance,Asset Management, Investment Banking, Equity Research, Risk Management,Treasury Banking were offered by the recruiters. One participant was also was

    offered a role in Financial Planning by an international infrastructure company.

    Sales and Marketing was an equally popular choice among students. 31% of theparticipants secured offers in this domain. Prominent organizations like Britannia,Dun and Bradstreet, Wipro Technologies offered various projects to theparticipants. Many e-commerce organizations also offered roles in OnlineMarketing. Market Research, Marketing Communication, Marketing Strategy and

    Sales were some of the profiles offered in this domain.

    Spurred by an increasing number of students showing keen interest in OperationsManagement, this domain saw improved participation from corporates likeFlipkart, Apollo Hospitals, Renault Nissan, Voltas being some of the majorrecruiters. Some of the profiles offered were Project Management, HospitalOperations and Supply Chain Management.

    Recruiters like Titan, Larsen and Toubro,IBM offered internships to students fortheir flagship HR and LeadershipDevelopment Programs. Amazon,Apollo Hospitals and Infoedge amongstothers offered roles of ProductDevelopment, Content Management inthe domain of Information Systems.

    IIM Shillong with its focus onsustainability and design thinking is allset to take its step towards higher

    echelons with the active support of itsfaculty, alumni, highly talented studentbase and the latest feather in its cap,Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, whowill be taking up the role of a visitingfaculty to share his knowledge andexperiences with the participants at IIMShillong.
