Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's remarks at a lecture by Dr. Amartya Sen on 'Centrality of Literacy' in New Delhi on August 3, 2010

I am what I am today because of the investment that my family and my country made in my education. There are millions of Indians like me who enter their adulthood with no other asset than education. But what an asset education is! It is most important differentiator, the most effective multiplier. Education is of course, far more than mere literacy. But it is literacy that stirs in our soul the unending search for knowledge. Alphabets are the building blocks of human civilization.

I sincerely hope that we in India can pool our energies together to ensure that every one of our citizens is awakened by the light of literacy and empowered by the energy of education.

The air waves, columns of erudite journals and lay press are awash

with the theme of re-fashioning MBA education. The context is the

aftermath of 2007-08 global meltdown, which in the view of many

experts showed up the deficiencies of the conventional MBA

education.

The business school communities are facing pressures from employers

who view the existing MBA programmes as arcane; graduate students

on the other hand, are yet to fully come to terms with the need for

drastic reinvention of their role from one of entitlement to one of

being a useful contributor. The world at large is increasingly concerned

with the disconnect between the MBA curricula and the skills and

techniques needed to be a responsible professional manager in the real

world.

BIMTECH and its distinguished faculty are aware of the gap that I

alluded to. We have taken many corrective measures. Such as exposing

our students to the concept of CSR, green environment, rural India's

problems and expectations, visions of social activists in person at our

campus etc. If I may use the term, 'elitism', it is being done away with.

Simultaneously 'must have' skills in the areas of global perspectives,

ERP, quality management, ethics, responsible business, social awareness

etc form the academic inputs and areas of practice at our Institute.

Our students are being readied for the paradigm shift of new,

'responsible management' practices. We extend you our warm

invitation to interact with them at our campus and judge for yourself.

Dr. H. Chaturvedi

Director

on fostering

responsible

managers…

In the future, MBAs need to learn how to assess the

importance of things while they are still emergent.

They need to identify trends like Green-tech or

Clean-tech and get ahead of the curve. They don't

know it all, but they have to know where to look

for the information and how to synthesize it.

How do you lead? How do you get people to do what must be done? That requires knowledge about what moves others. Students need to understand situations from a psychological and interpersonal perspective, not just a cognitive point of view.

(PGDM)

PGDM has been the earliest programme initiated

of the Institute to meet needs of industry and

organizations. The programme was approved by

the All India Council for Technical Education

(AICTE) in 1993 and since then it has earned its

reputation in the corporate world. This course

has also been granted NBA accreditation for five

years with effect from 2008.

The PGDM course of BIMTECH has also been

accrediated by the Association Indian Universities

(AIU) for equivalence with MBA. The course is

also recognized by the Association of

Commonwealth Universities (ACU), UK.

CAT scores obtained by students are used for

screening more than 10.000 applications each

year. Thereafter, the Essay/Personal Interview is

conducted with the support of senior corporate

managers to select students for the programme.

Being an autonomous programme, PGDM is run

in close association with the industry. Right from

the admission of the students to the designing

the curriculum and providing opportunities for

summer internship and final placement, they are

our partners. The rigorous programme inculcates

in the participants, the ability to work under

pressure, besides giving them a strong academic

base. Wading through classes, guest lectures,

presentations and assignments the students also

learn to do time management, which is an

essential requirement for being a successful

manager.

The PGDM programme is divided into six

trimesters Marketing, Finance, HR and

Operations offered as specialization.

The students are exposed to the corporate

world through BIMTECH's industry academia

interface, summer internship and winter project,

all of which are a part of the course design and

has to be compulsorily taken up by the students.

Live projects and industrial visits which are

jointly guided by the industry managers and core

faculty develop students' understanding of

modern business processes.

The aim of the Centre for Risk Management and

Insurance (CIRM) of BIMTECH is to turn out

insurance management executives who can, so to

say, hit the track running.

To achieve this objective, we offer cutting edge

curricula. Among the recently introduced changes

are the study of advanced risk management

(including enterprise risk management), micro

finance, micro insurance and micro health

insurance. This is, of course, besides the

conventional insurance subjects both in life and

non-life, as well as reinsurance.

Besides, students are taught the elements of

actuarial science, marketing, finance, CRM, OB &

HR and Personal Financial Planning.

Rounding off the personality traits of the

students is accomplished by focused training in

soft skills, corporate visits and industry based

projects.

The Centre has the following recognitions

/ tie ups:

• Life Office Management Association (LOMA),

USA is BIMTECH's educational partner and

BIMTECH is an approved centre for LOMA

examination. Quite a few of the life insurance

subjects taught are based on the LOMA

curriculum.

• The Two year PGDM (Insurance Business) has

been recognized as equivalent to the Associate

level of the Insurance Institute of India,

Mumbai.

• The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), UK

has accorded recognition (by way of credits)

to our PGDM (Insurance Business) course.

“As observed by the national surveys and

also by the International Commission on

Education for Sustainable Development

Practice (ICESDP), the McArthur

Foundation and The Earth Institute,

Columbia University, we need

professionals who act as change agents in

social development, understanding the

complex underpinnings of natural

sciences, health sciences, social sciences

and management. It is a well established

fact that there is acute need for

professionals to carry forward the agenda

of sustainable development and inclusive

growth. With this in view, BIMTECH has

started a Masters in Sustainable

Development Practices (SDP). The SDP

programme envisages two terms of field

training with a national or international

organization. Graduates should get

challenging and meaningful opportunities

for employment with diverse range of

institutions and organizations. “
