Dear Friends and Supporters,

It has been a successful and busy year for Placer Land Trust. We have many highlights to share, including lands acquired, habitat improved, and new trails built. Operations continue to be strong with a clean audit, renewed accreditation, and many successful fundraising efforts to report.

However, it’s a story of my granddaughter Rosie that reminds me why I, and probably many others, believe in the mission of Placer Land Trust…My wife and I attended a PLT event with 7-year old Rosie in tow. She snacked at the hors d’oeuvre table while people spoke about PLT. Rosie was already familiar with PLT as we’ve talked about why I protect land and wildlife such as red-legged frogs, burrowing owls, and dog-faced butterflies. The event was a success, including several donations, and a large gift from a man who spent most of the evening chatting with Rosie. As the evening drew to a close, Rosie asked if she could donate a dollar and wondered if it would help. “Yes, of course,” I said, trying to hide my surprise at her offer, and showed her where the envelopes were. The very next day she put her own dollar in the envelope and sent it to PLT. It wasn’t the largest donation that year, but to me it may have been the most significant. It proved to me that people of ALL ages understand the value of what PLT does!

Sincerely,

Fred Yeager, President of the Board of Directors

Future Generations

Placer Land TrustWe believe that wild open spaces and natural playgrounds add to quality of life and are an essential part of a healthy community–connecting people to themselves, others and the land.

We work with willing landowners and conservation partners to permanently protect natural and agricultural lands in Placer County for future generations. Protecting the land, restoring habitat and building trails to create new natural playgrounds is at the core of our work.

Page 3: Placer Land Trust Community Report

Placer Land Trust believes that adventure comes in all shapes and sizes, but no matter what form it takes, it’s bound to improve your health, confidence and overall happiness when it takes place in a beautiful outdoor setting. That’s why we strive to continually open more natural playgrounds for outdoor enthusiasts, young and old, for generations to come.

Health Benefits of NatureHealth is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

- World Health Organization

“A delicate balance is needed to address all of these aspects of health. Outdoor recreation and adventure is the answer to that balance. It is now believed that major health determinants have little to do with healthcare systems and much more to do with environmental and social factors. So go outside and play!”

- Gina Giambruno, PLT Board Member & Health Educator

Trails & Recreation Campaign Hikes & AdventuresPlacer Land Trust provides many opportunities for outdoor adventure and play. Many of our preserves are open to the public and some have trails for hiking or biking. We also offer guided hikes and other activities which are led by a group of devoted, well-trained docents. These activities are often people’s first impression of Placer Land Trust, and the docents are valued ambassadors sharing our mission with attendees. Here’s our impact in 2013-2014:

• Our docent program has grown to over 20 amazing volunteers who make our adventures possible.

• Over 20 activities were offered, increasing access to nature and the associated health benefits.

• Over 300 people joined Placer Land Trust in appreciating the outdoors through our adventures.

Trails are essential to increasing access to nature, which provides key benefits such as improved health, exciting adventures, and bringing education to life. That’s why Placer Land Trust is raising $750,000 to build 20+ miles of new trails through permanently protected oak woodlands stretching from Coon Creek to the Bear River. These new trails will connect with Hidden Falls Regional Park, creating a 50 mile continuous trail system that is unprecedented in the Sierra foothills. Here’s what we accomplished in 2013-2014:

• We built a 1.5 mile trail at Canyon View Preserve, now open to the public daily, and expanded trails at Harvego Bear River Preserve by 1.5 miles.

• We received a $25,000 grant for 3 miles of new trails at Taylor Ranch Preserve.

• We helped Placer County secure the critical land connection between Hidden Falls and our new trails.

Connection

Forever SocietyGraeme and Debra Plant recently became the newest members of Placer Land Trust’s Forever Society by listing PLT in their Charitable Remainder Trust. When asked why they were inspired to leave this legacy, Graeme shared, “We love that Placer Land Trust is preserving valley floor, the foothills, and the Sierra. We don’t want to see this critically important, and beautiful, land ruined by urban sprawl and un-guided development.” The Plants hope that their investment in open space and access to outdoor recreation will help future generations thrive in Placer County…Forever!

Preserving land and critical habitat has many benefits, but Placer Land Trust believes it’s our community that benefits the most. Land has the ability to bring people together—kids form friendships as they play outdoors, nature lovers come together to hike and view wildlife, couples deepen relationships as they get away from it all and enjoy a beautiful vista, and families strengthen bonds as they tend their farms and ranches together for generations.

Placer Land Trust members are the heart and soul of our organization. Their annual and sustaining donations make our mission possible. Our members continue to awe and inspire us by supporting PLT not only with their membership dues, but also by contributing to valuable campaigns and events that allow us to expand our reach. Here are some highlights from 2013-2014:

• 590 members gave over $570,000 in support of Placer Land Trust’s mission.

• Over 200 new members found value in our work and joined Placer Land Trust.

• Donors showed their love of Placer Land Trust’s work on the BIG Day of Giving, helping PLT raise the most money in Placer County: $70,000 in one day.

Many people show they value the mission of Placer Land Trust by volunteering. Our volunteers help bring our mission to life. From preparing mailings, to setting policies, to introducing people to our lands, our volunteers do it all. Volunteers of all ages teach us the true meaning of giving by selflessly sharing their time and talents with us. In 2013-2014, PLT volunteers deepened our impact:

• Over 300 volunteers gave over 4,000 hours of their time back to their community.

• We gained the support and expertise of 4 new volunteer board members: Barbara Brenner, Gina Giambruno, Doug Houston, and Larry Menth.

• Placer Land Trust honored the Boy Scout Troop 121 as the Placer Conservator of the Year for their service to the community by protecting natural and agricultural lands for future generations.

Stewardshipphoto by Keith Sutter

Stewardship is defined as “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” Placer Land Trust’s commitment to stewardship extends beyond protecting the land; it provides the opportunity to enjoy the many benefits of wild open spaces and natural playgrounds. Our community was built around these treasured landscapes, and our job is to ensure that they continue to shape our lives and our future.

Placer Land Trust has protected over 7,700 acres including: natural areas, wildlife habitat, family farms, working ranches, river and canyon lands, public parks, trails and trailheads. This land is protected forever. In 2013-2014, we protected over 580 acres:

• Aeolia Preserve- 7.5 acres above the American River Canyon in Auburn; contains portions of a historic olive orchard and neighborhood trail.

• Big Bend North Fork Preserve- These 417 acres near the Ponderosa Bridge permanently protect a stretch of the North Fork American River and ensure public access to the river, forever.

• Mergen North Fork Preserve- The 160-acre preserve on the North Fork American River includes the Staircase Rapids, well known by rafters, kayakers, and other river enthusiasts.

Land ProtectedWe are actively managing and monitoring 40 properties to ensure public benefit is protected for now and forever. We work to enhance the land by restoring wildlife habitat, controlling non-native invasive weeds, reducing fuel loads, improving public access, and more. Here are just a couple examples from 2013-2014:

• We completed a $500,000 wetlands restoration project on Swainsons Grassland Preserve.

• Reduced risk of wildfire by creating and maintaining over 100 acres of fuel breaks on several preserves.

Land Restored

A Neighborhood Impacted“Placer Land Trust protected land [Aeolia Preserve] near my home in Auburn, including an historic olive orchard and a neighborhood trail providing views into the American River Canyon. I’m thrilled that beautiful and historic lands like these will be protected forever.”

-Joanne Neft

“In 1976 my husband and I built a house adjacent to what is now the Aeolia Preserve. Our family, including our three children, enjoyed the area daily. Now, because of the fine efforts of the Placer Land Trust, my grandchildren’s children and many others will have an opportu-nity to enjoy and cherish this wonderful canyon area on the edge of Auburn.”

-Donna McGlaughlin

Placer Land Trust was the first Land Trust in the Sierra Nevada to receive renewed accreditation by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, in 2013.
