MODULE 2 Using technology in a safe, legal, and ethical manner Answer Sheet DIGITAL NATIVES Read to learn more about the war between digital immigrants & digital natives . Answer the following prompt after reading the article. I wonder…how technology truly creates a digital gap with those who are in poverty. In particular, I’m thinking of my students and their families. In our school, we try our best to use the latest technology thinking we are helping the students. Often times students have homework such as typing an essay, doing a research project, or even using the computer for pictures to include in a presentation. I even give homework help to math problems on my weebly site. Although this sounds good and we are reaching the “new aged” child, are we really creating a barrier at the same time. I work in a school were over 85% are free and reduce lunch and many of them have no Internet access or means to get Internet access. So although we are trying to reach all students and create this “fun” educational atmosphere we are actually making the learning gap even bigger. Those who have Internet access are getting more knowledge, helpful study hints, and getting a head start on their assignments. So again, we went from trying to reach all students in an exciting way to only reach some of our students. Just this year, I am starting to ask myself questions such as: “I wonder how they feel going home to Internet access? What goes through their heads when we assume they can research and type papers at home?” It’s truly something to think

Answer the following prompt after reading the article. I wonder…how technology truly creates a digital gap with those

who are in poverty. What goes through their heads when we assume they can research and type papers at home?” It’s truly something to think about as we are trying to move forward in education. The article made a statement about making some people stressful over technology and Internet use because it is forever changing and moving. Are we creating stress for our students when we make such assumptions?

COPYRIGHT FOR YOUR STUDENTSDISCUSSION ACTIVITY:

Prompt: What techniques could you use to teach your students about copyright laws?

o Respond here & paste in Edmodo Module 2 discussion post. Sadly, I learned a lot from exploring this website. As many people above have stated, I

don't think I was properly educated on copyright and plagiarism. The only time I remember talking about this was during English class when we had to write a paper. The difference between then and now is that technology is more widespread used and students have the access to manipulate and copyright many things. It is very important that they be informed and taught the right way. What I like most about this website are the real life scenarios. I like the video under the mix and mash where it talks about music. Students don’t realize it but through this video, they are able to see what mistakes their making and why that is breaking the law. In addition, I really liked the spot the difference. Although this is very elementary and I teach middle school, sometimes it’s the small things that make a difference. This shows the students in a picture how easy plagiarism is and how often people do this. Lastly as a closing activity, I think it would be neat for the students to involve their stories. Giving them an index card, each student could write a time where they may have plagiarized and we could discuss those aloud.
