FROM THE PRINCIPAL MR DAMIAN MESSER
Catholic Education Week
In celebrating Catholic Education Week, as a College community we are called to respond to the theme modelled by Pope Francis -‐‑ ‘Opening the Door of Mercy’. We recognise the contribution made by all in Catholic education in Tasmania as we promote the mission and ethos central to being an authentic Catholic school. Mass was held in the Cathedral earlier today with student representatives from all Catholic schools in the Diocese in attendance. It was great to see the Grade 5 class and Junior School Leaders represent St Virgil'ʹs at this significant Eucharistic celebration.
Athletics Carnival
As part of our annual House competitions, the Athletics Carnival provides one of the major opportunities for students to come together and participate in events which attract valuable points towards the House Cup. Next Thursday August 25, the College will gather at the Domain Athletics Centre for this year’s event. It promises to be an exciting day for all and we look forward to great weather, healthy competition and lots of fun. Parents are most welcome to attend. The carnival will run from 9.30am to 2.15pm.

National Benchmark Testing Trial
Next week we have two different forms of National benchmark testing across the College. Grade 4 and Grade 8 students will take part in National Religious Education Literacy Testing which is an online test. A selected Grade 7 and Grade 9 class will participate in an online trial of the NAPLAN style testing as the test regime looks to transition to fully online environment in coming years.
Book Week
The theme for Book Week this year is ‘Australiana’ and our Junior School Library has been transformed with displays of amazing native Australian artefacts. It was wonderful today to see so many students engage in the Book Week theme and come dressed as their favourite Australiana book character.
CCEL
Last week I attended the Council of Catholic Educational Leaders (CCEL) seminar where the key focus was on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si. The theme for the two days examined how schools can respond to the challenges that our environment presents in our everyday life. It became readily apparent that as a two campus school community firstly we must understand the challenges for each site and then look at practical ways of moving forward with solutions that enhance our natural environment.

One key message that was clearly articulated in the action plan was to develop an attitude of gratitude, and in so doing, take time to give thanks for what we do have, instead of looking for what we might want.
Work Experience
This week I have again had the great pleasure of visiting a number of our Grade 10 boys who are undertaking work experience with businesses around Hobart. It has been wonderful to see the boys engaged in a range of work tasks as they learn about the expectations of employers and start to further clarify their vocational pathways. Host employers have been effusive in their praise of our boys and their strong work ethic, willingness to ask questions and ability to work as part of a team.
This is a great experience and opportunity for our boys and I would like to sincerely thank the host employers for providing students with this outstanding educational experience.
Community Football Lunch
I encourage all football fans, friends and family to attend the annual Community Football Luncheon being held this Friday August 19 from 12 noon.
Bookings for the lunch can still be made on https://www.trybooking.com/202887 or by contacting Mr Mark Waddington – [email protected]

Athletics Carnival
Next Thursday August 25 we are conducting the annual St Virgil’s College Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre. The carnival will commence at 9.30am and conclude at approximately 2.40pm. Boys will be transported to the Carnival by bus from school and buses home will depart from the Domain at the conclusion of the day. There will be a bus returning to school for those that need to return to Austin’s Ferry.
Boys are to wear their Sports Uniform, importantly including their coloured House shirt, and should bring their College hat. They should bring lunch and a drink as there will be no facility for buying lunch on the day.
This is always a great day and parents are very welcome to attend. It is a compulsory school day for all students. As I outlined recently, I have reviewed the attendance data for the past three years and boys with a less than satisfactory record of attendance on such days will be reminded of their enrolment commitments.
NAPLAN Trials
Boys in 7B and 9F have this week participated in a NAPLAN online trial. Such trials have been conducted throughout the nation with randomly selected groups as a means of determining the success or otherwise of future NAPLAN tests being conducted online. There is nothing for parents to be concerned about as these are simply trials.

JUNIOR SCHOOL MR ANDREW PINELLI , HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Justice and Solidarity We are committed to justice and peace for all, grounded in a spirituality of action and reflection that calls us to stand in solidarity with those who are marginalised and the Earth itself. ― EREA Touchstone A challenge for all of our boys, now and into the future, is to stand in solidarity with those who are ‘blessed’ in the eyes of our God – the peacemakers, the merciful, those who thirst for justice, as well as the poor, the powerless, the excluded, the marginalised, the humble and the suffering. We need our boys to scrutinise the messages they see on TV and through social media and to not just accept the thoughts and views of others who may tend towards being extreme. As our boys make their path through life, we need them to advocate for those who are publicly, or privately marginalised because of their lot in life. Often, in the business of our day we forget to look for those who are blessed in God’s eyes and needing of our support, encouragement and time. It is always heartening to see many of our boys genuinely looking out for each other. Often, there is an endless stream of boys helping another boy who might have been injured whilst on the playground. Or, there is always the small gesture of congratulations, a high five, a pat on the back or just a smile, when another boys is acknowledged for an achievement – and not just from those in his class. In some ways this is relatively easy as we have a level of awareness of those we spend our days with. The challenge for our boys now and into the future is to look for the ‘blessed’ that will cross their daily paths in the days and years to come. Parent Paperwork By now, I trust that you have received one or more communications form our new ICT system Parent Paperwork – these would have included whole Campus notices like the Disco or Grade/Class specific like the Lucky Jars note for 4B. The system will be used extensively to deliver all information about College excursions, incursions, sporting and music trips and other events that have traditionally been communicated to you via a paper-‐‑based, student delivered form. To enable the system to work optimally though it is essential that the College has your latest contact details. If you change details, in particular email addresses, at any time please advise the College office on soon as practicable. Thank

you for your assistance in this matter -‐‑ I trust you will enjoy the great benefits that Parent Paperwork and our other ICT systems provide to you. Book Week Today, we are celebrating Book Week. Yes, we know we are a little early, but our activities would conflict with next week’s House Athletics Carnival. Our boys have been encouraged to dress up in: an Australian theme, Olympic athlete or favourite book character. Whilst our parade of different characters is a lot of fun, the real message of Book Week is to highlight the importance, and enjoyment, that can be had when reading books and other literature. As adults, and parents, we know too well how important reading and comprehending is . Check out the Twitter feed this afternoon for some great pictures of this activity. There will be more pictures available in next week’s edition of the Star. Woodwork Grade 3 O have now completed finished their visits to the Senior School for their woodwork lessons. By the looks of their work, they have had an enjoyable time during their visits. The boys finished off this week producing a tea light candle holder. Grade 4 B will commence their turn at wood work next week. We look forward to seeing what they are able to create. Catholic Education Week Mass Today, our Grade 5 boys represented St Virgil’s College at the Catholic Education Week Mass for the greater Hobart area. This is an important part of our faith tradition but also for the boys to see first hand that they are part of something that is much bigger than just SVC. House Athletics Carnival Next Thursday, the annual House Athletics Carnival is being held at the Domain Athletics Track. Our boys will be competing for the coveted House Athletics Shield as well as to qualify for a position in the Athletics Squad. We are looking forward to a fantastic day. The boys will need to bring their own lunch on the day and an adequate amount of drinks too. More details coming soon.

Enrolments Enrolment interviews have commenced for places for 2017. It is a rewarding time listening to the hopes and dreams of prospective parents for their sons. It is also lovely to hear the positive feedback that is passed on through prospective parents. If you have friends or family who are thinking of St Virgil’s as possible place for their son’s education, please encourage them to contact the campus and complete an expression of interest form as soon as possible if they haven’t already. Junior School P & F Association Junior School Fair Mark in your calendar September 11 which is our Fair Day. All boys are expected to attend and assist on their class stall wearing their sports uniform. Being sent home very soon will be a request for parents and friends to volunteer to assist with one of the stalls. Please offer your time, even if it is only brief, to assist in making our Fair a great success. There is still the opportunity for businesses to donate money and have stalls named after them. These monetary donations are a great help towards the success of the Fair. Details about these opportunities are in the letter or can be discussed with Simone Ashby (President) or Andrew Pinelli. The next meeting of the P & F will be Tuesday August 23 commencing at 6.00pm in the Library. SVC Disco What a fantastic night was enjoyed by the boys as well as the visiting girls from Mount Carmel College and St Mary’s College. With DJ Foxy playing popular music some interesting dance moves were performed by all those in attendance. Special thank you to the teaching staff who were able to attend and assist with supervision. Thank you also to the parents who helped out selling food, drinks and glow sticks to those in attendance. Thanks too to all those students who were able to come along and have a great night. Well over $1000 was raised by the P & F from this most enjoyable evening. JSSATIS Basketball
This week saw some our teams travel to other JSSATIS Schools for the third round of Basketball. At our home base, SMC Nagle Centre, we hosted three Grade 3&4 games. All three teams played Hutchins in lively encounters. For me the highlight of this week’s round of games would have to be the look of sheer excitement on Oscar Sirgunas’s (Grade 3) face when he plays. Another highlight would be Samuel Badenach, Grade 4, SVC 3&4 Green Team, scoring his first goal in basketball!
Grade 5&6
Svc Green lost to Hutchins Black
SVC Green played Hutchins Black at Hutchins. We went into the second half with a 14 point deficit. The boys played an exceptional second half to finish with the ball in our offence to heartbreakingly go down by 1 point. All boys should be incredibly proud of the fight they put in.

Hockey Grand Final
If you are at a loose end this Saturday morning, August 20, please make your way down to the Cornelian Bay hockey grounds (closest to the Boathouse, and coffee!) to see SVC Saints take on Corpus Christi in a re-‐‑match of the 2015 Grand Final. In this year’s roster, Corpus ended on top of the ladder and Saints second. The game should be an exciting one, with SVC Saints looking to become back to back Premiers. The game starts at 10am and wear your blue and gold!
Term Four Sport Registrations
Don’t forget to sign up for Term Four sport by August 31! Indoor Cricket is on Monday nights for Grade 5&6s, and Touch Football on Thursdays. Tee-‐‑ball for Grade 3&4s is on a Tuesday in Term Four.

2016 Clarence Eisteddfod
The College Choirs, Bands and various music ensembles have been entered into the upcoming Clarence Eisteddfod. All boys involved in these ensembles have been given the music required to rehearse. Please encourage them at home to practice their music in the upcoming month so that they are fully prepared for their performance.
It is important that all students attend every rehearsal in the upcoming weeks. Working towards Eisteddfod performances is a team effort and everybody needs to be there to ensure that all parts are covered in rehearsal.
The Eisteddfod runs from Monday September 5 – Friday September 9 at Citywide, Mornington.
Parents and friends are invited to attend and support the boys.

From the Admiral - SVC Sailing
Br Peter Flint
I counted up this afternoon. We can now put 18 boys on the water plus the two support boats.
Once we get the old Sabots rejuvenated, we will have the capacity for 28 boys on the water. (But we
will need an extra support boat and associated equipment!)
Yes the new Sabots have arrived - six of them. All in good order but some with cosmetic damage. The
storage frames are under construction.
The Marine Education Centre is starting to look rather smart. Lots of clutter has been removed.
The club room itself needs a tidy. The two side rooms remain a bit messy, but their day will come!
An Invitation to Visit - This Saturday morning (August 20) from 9:30am - 11am.
This not a working bee but an invitation to come and have a look at the boats, club room and boat shed
and have a chat about sailing.
I invite junior and senior school boys to bring some of their mates down who might be interested in
sailing. There will of course be a sausage sizzle!
Please RSVP to Br Peter - [email protected]
