RMWS NEWSLETTER

November 2018

Rocky Mountain Region of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America

Notes From Nancy

Wet cold weather has come to southern Utah and college classes are challenging me daily. The other challenge I have, and why I am not on computer much right now, is a vision issue. I have always been a very visual person, love of colors, patterns, and design. At the moment I am facing the terrifying possibility that I will lose the sight in my right eye. (hopefully, at the chapter meeting I will have good news on this, I meet with eye Dr. in a few days.) So please hang in there with me in facing challenges of this turn in my life. I am glad I can crochet since that doesn't require much eye stuff, but my embroidery, needlework etc. is set aside so I can rest my eye between doing homework and tests for college. Thanks in advance for all the positive thoughts. —Nancy M

This & That Wanda Anderson has agreed to serve as RMWS Vice President.

Lisa Hurley now serves as Board Secretary and Membership Chair.

Becky Autry will be stepping down as Webmaster at the end of the year.

Which presents a volunteer opportunity

Wanted:

Webmaster to update and maintain the website for RMWS

We need a volunteer for this position starting the first of the year. The chapter’s web-

site needs a person to update and maintain the site. This involves setting up meetings,

uploading the newsletter and monthly education letter and posting pictures for various

activities. The website is currently utilizing a free version of WordPress. This is an easy

to use basic tool where online help is available.

Since we are an online chapter, it is critical to keep the website running and up-to-date. If you are interested and would like more information, contact either Nancy Munier, President or Becky Autry ([email protected]) for more information.

Karen Anthony – [email protected]

Yvonne Hallock – [email protected]

Jennifer Wollesen – [email protected]

GOING ON NOW –

GCC – registration is now open through November 15 for “Taming the Stash Monster.” The class will start March 1,

just in time for Spring Cleaning. You should have received an email announcing this. You can sign up by emailing the Group Coordinator, Jennifer Wollesen. Please contact her or me for more information. If your stash has a life of its own like mine does, I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Menagerie of Mystery Stitch-A-Long – this this year-long stitch-a-long project has kicked off, but you can join anytime or

opt out of receiving emails anytime, as well. If you’d like to visit the discussion to get a sense of what we’re actually doing and see photos, you can find the Menagerie SAL Discussion on our website under the Education tab and click on Current Chapter Projects. For more information, contact Karen Anthony.

Stitch Families Stitch-A-Long – this year-long stitch-a-long project has also kicked off. If you are now interested, contact Barbara Ing at [email protected].

Rocky Mountain Region’s Border to Border. You should have received an email with the October 2018 issue of Border to Border from your Rocky Mountain Region of The Embroiderers' Guild of America attached. RMR is using a new service for emails and are now able to send the newsletter to every member of RMR who has an email address. If you did not receive this email, please let me know so we can fix the problem.

EGA Stitching Opportunities – There are a lot of stitching opportunities sponsored by EGA, and you can find information

about all of them on the EGA website. Each month we’ll highlight one of them in the “Spotlight on” topic below. As a reminder, we have an incentive program to reward completion of any EGA sponsored program, course, class, or even small stitching project – such as Facebook Stitch-A-Long project, Master Craftsman step, GCC, ICC, Lightning Round, EGA or RMR Seminar UFO, etc. Send us a description of what you did and photo(s) for us to put on the website and Facebook (by sending us your information, you are giving us permission to post it). We’ll enter your name in a drawing for every one you submit. Every June 1 we’ll draw two names; each will receive $25 to be used for something stitching-related.

GCC Lightning Rounds – The GCC Lightning Rounds we previously announced for this quarter are: “Finishing with Flair,”

“Taming the Stash Monster,” and Spring Splendor.” EGA has added a fourth Lightning Round for this quarter: “Perfectly Count-ed Crosses”. You can find the descriptions on the EGA website at https://egausa.org/product-category/lightning-round/. As a reminder, we will refund you half the Registration Fee upon successful completion of the class.

October’s EGA Facebook Stitch-A-Long, “Halloween Biscornu,” is still available at

https://www.facebook.com/groups/486902244995324/. “It's October 1st and it's time for a new project! I am thrilled to tell you that the darling Halloween Biscornu that was featured in EGA's ad in the Halloween issue of Just Cross Stitch magazine is our October project. Kim Beamish, a talented designer from Canada is the artistic stitcher behind this pro-

ject. Thank you, Kim, for sharing your project with our Stitch-a-Long group and EGA. You can find the instructions for this project on EGA's website.” At of this writing in mid-October, November’s EGA Facebook Stitch-A-Long has not yet been announced, but you can use the link in this paragraph to see what the new SAL is around November 1.

EGA Headquarters EGA News – You should receive an email every month telling you what’s new and being featured at

EGA. I received the October one on October 17. If you are not receiving them, please let us know so that we can fix that!

COMING UP –

RMWS Play Date – After our November meeting, Karen Anthony will continue her explorations on our website in the area called "Play Date" under the Education tab. She will be exploring the following topics for the next six months:

• Finishing Techniques

• Exploring Old and New Tools of the Needlework Trade

• Exploring the World of Samplers

Adapting Patterns to Create 3-D Objects

Karen will be making 1 or 2 posts per month on each topic. Please join in the discussion and let Karen know if there is something specific you would like to see with any of the topics.

RMWS Guest Blogger – Based on the results of our Education survey, we will be starting up our "Guest Blogger" portion of the website again with monthly posts. The primary areas of interest identified in the survey were - tips & tricks, tools & gadgets, different techniques, and finishing techniques. The Education Committee is looking for volunteers who would be willing to post on one of those topics or a topic of her choice. The plan is to rotate among volunteers. This means if we can get 4-6 volunteers, each person would only need to post once every 4-6 months. Karen will take care of the November & December postings, so volunteers would begin after the first of the new year. Please let me (Rosemary) know before or during the Chapter meeting if you are willing to volunteer.

EGA Online Courses. EGA has announced two upcoming Online Courses.

1. Registration is now open for Pathways with Margaret Kinsey. “You will love this elegant study in Metal Thread Embroidery where you will learn to create stitches that you have always used, but with metal threads.” In this class you will create pathways that are bordered with flowers and seed-like effects by using soft wire purls, pearl purl and spangles to complete this wonderful piece.

2. Registration opens on November 5 for Design Like a Pro with Catherine Jordan. In this online course you will learn some of the basic principles of design as well as pitfalls to avoid, so that your ideas reflect a thoughtful and unified composition.

May Basket – Becky Autry will be leading a short Stitch-A-Long of her May Basket beginning in January. Watch for more information as we get closer.

World's Longest Band Sampler Project. The San Francisco School of Needlework and Design decided launch a new pro-gram/challenge in celebration of this year’s World Embroidery Day. They have launched a program/challenge to create the World’s Longest Band Sampler. They are looking for help in creating this. This is an ongoing project that does not have a due date - so everyone interested can work at their own pace. Karen Anthony learned about this event on Facebook from the Metropoli-tan Region of EGA and the Mohawk Valley EGA chapter. We, as a chapter need to decide if we want to participate. Karen saw 3 possible options for participation:

As individuals - those members who choose to participate can do so. Please share photos of your band so we can post them on the website and let Rosemary know about your participation

As a chapter - design a band as a chapter and one person volunteer to stitch and submit for the chapter

Both - all interested members submit their own band and design a chapter band

Since all of the bands will be sewn together at the school to create a single, long band sampler - the bands must all be a uniform size. The finished dimensions must be 9 inches wide and between 3-5 inches tall. They have also requested a 1 inch seam allow-ance on all sides, which will be used to sew the bands together. They provided the following diagram on their website:

In accordance with traditional embroidery samplers, the school has requested that you consider including some of the following elements: your name, your location, your age, date or year of creation, and any imagery that is important to you (such as house, family, pets, sports, travel, hobbies, etc.)

Your band can be stitched using whatever technique you like and any fabric you prefer (provided the fabric can be readily stitched to another band).

More detailed information about the project and submission instructions can be found at:

https://www.sfneedleworkanddesign.org/the-worlds-longest-band-sampler-project/. Our possible participation as a Chapter will be an agenda item at the November Chapter Meeting.

DID YOU KNOW?

Spotlight on an EGA Program – Online classes are a convenient way to take your embroidery to the next level. EGA’s online classes take place right on the EGA website and in an environment where you can read and review your lessons, discuss with other students, ask questions directly to your teacher, and more. See “Coming Up” above for information on two upcoming EGA Online Classes. https://egausa.org/online-courses/.

Yvonne’s Hints & Tips for November, 2018 – Keeping your project from distorting as you stitch: Some stitch-ers hold their projects in hand, but I can only do that for very small projects. There are several ways to keep your pro-jects from distorting. They include embroidery hoops, Q-snaps, stretcher bars, and scroll bars. I tend to use Q-snaps and stretcher bars, but other stitchers use the other items quite successfully. So try everything and see what works best for you. (I also like the fabric stretched so I can see it better.)

From all four of us – hope you all are having a lovely autumn (my favorite time of year). Please take advantage of our stitching opportunities going on now and coming up. If you have any suggestions, please let us know as we are YOUR Education Committee!

Share Your Stitching, Show Your Work

One way we can inspire, encourage and get to know each other is to share our progress, finishes and even

disasters online. Here’s how:

Find our Facebook page by doing a quick search for Rocky Mountain Web Stitchers and then click on the Join

tab. If members are not already on Facebook and don’t wish to join, they can still add their project pictures

to the page by emailing them to Lisa Hurley at [email protected] All pictures shared on Facebook

are also shared on our main website so everyone has access to the same photos and information.

Speaking of inspiration: Here are four photos recently added to the RMWS website and Facebook page.

Can you guess who stitched each piece? For a hint—the first three pieces can be found by going to the

website home page (rmwebstitchers.org) and clicking on Our Photo Gallery then click on Chapter Incentive

Projects. The fourth picture is from the Menagerie of Mystery site found under the Member’s Only section

of the webpage.
