The 2016 year delivered significant shocks to the Aerospace and Defence Sectors, with the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, closely followed by the election of Donald Trump in the United States. If there is something these sectors do not like, it is uncertainty, and there is a lot of political uncertainty around. In contrast, the aerospace and defence markets show that there is a lot to be optimistic about. Annual figures released by our national partners ADS Group show that in 2016, the global aerospace industry delivered a record-breaking number of aircraft for the sixth consecutive year. 1,443 commercial aircraft rolled off the production line, representing up to £27bn of the UK’s aerospace industry, an increase of £4bn on 2015. ADS forecasts that 2017 will see a 6-7% rise in delivery rates, equating to more than 1,500 new aircraft. With 13,567 aircraft on order – the highest ever level of demand - manufacturers are facing pressure to increase production rates.

However, sector trends published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have highlighted a divergence between UK aerospace turnover and value added. Over the course of the last decade UK

aerospace turnover has been growing by over 5% year-on-year whilst value added has remained flat. The Aerospace Technology Institute believes this trend implies that against a steady increase in aircraft and engine orders, the UK is capturing a lower share of product value which may be due to an increase in overseas sourcing. Another contributing factor could be greater pressure on profit margins, potentially as a result of the significant cost reductions achieved in the aerospace industry. Previous studies, such as the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy’s UK aerospace supply chain study, published in 2016, identified that whilst the UK aerospace industry is growing, it is not keeping pace with global growth and the UK is losing market share to global competitors.

The North West Aerospace Alliance has always championed the need to strengthen the UK aerospace supply chain. Improving the productivity and

competitiveness of the Mid-Cap and SME companies at all levels is the key to anchoring future aerospace activity in the UK. Whilst we’ve been through an uncertain political period, now is the time to seize the opportunity to boost the UK’s global competitiveness by investing in successful business improvement and innovation programmes. Over the next 12 months NWAA will look to build upon the proven National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme that has to date allocated over £3.34 Million to aerospace supply chain companies in the North West. In addition, we would also like to develop a new and exclusive supply chain improvement network of excellence based on the national SC21 Competitiveness and Growth programme. We think we can add significant value both in improving organisations but also in marketing this select group of companies to UK and Global customers.

We are also working hard on our key events for 2017; the New Talent Awards, the NWAA Annual Conference, Paris International Air Show and the Aerospace Ball. All of them are going to be fantastic opportunities for our members to network, learn, sell, celebrate and enjoy. I hope to see you soon in 2017.

NWAA Chairman’s Spring StatementBy Neil McKay

As the new year unfolds I would like to take this opportunity to be clear about our intentions and commitmentsregarding the next phase of programme implementation for the NWAA.

The political background and the inherent uncertainties around Brexit and the new U.S. administration arecausing some consternation for the industry but over the long term are just the latest issues that we have to grasp and react to in our strategic approach. Overall our direction remains unchanged with a clear objective to increase competitiveness of the supply chain here in the North West. This has always been enabled through a programmed approach, that is agile and flexible to most business risk scenarios such as the ones we are currently encountering.

Therefore to avoid any time delay or distraction we will pursue the next phase of programme establishment at full throttle with two cohorts of companies joining this year. We envisage a cohort being six companies strong with the first one

enabled in the spring of this year with the next six to follow in the autumn.

This will be the third programme for the NW following on from the successful ASCE 1 & 2 programmes of the lastten years. This will be a nationally recognised programme that will gear a number of companies to SC21+ and accreditation at bronze, silver and ultimately gold level, thus creating a pedigree group of collaborative companies here in the North West, a most desirable outcome for the customer and supplier populations that equips the whole regional industry for the global aerospace challenge.

The supply chain workshop events will still be held on a bi-monthly basis but will be a direct support to thisprogramme and will be the mechanism to a collaborative and best practice provider to the broader membership as a whole and allow the supporting organisations to align to any demand signals from the applied activities.

The new programme will be built upon tried and trusted foundations familiar to us on past experience such

as mentoring, coaching and steering groups. However new and exciting online training and accomplishment techniques giving us the ability to involve large numbers of the inherent workforce of our North West companies is a unique feature of the way forward, one that will enable companies to tap the latent enthusiasm of their employees. The potential that this could deliver is something that personally fills me with confidence and vigour for this unique feature.

I hope this article picks up the enthusiasm we have for this new venture and look forward to enacting this inefficient fashion to our greater good.

NATEP NEWS

NATEP

What’s Happening in NATEP?The winter months may have shorter sunlight days, however the NATEP team are as busy as ever. With several projects now entering the final phase of their ventures we are busy supporting them through close out and ensur-ing they have the opportunity to present their projects to a wide and diverse audience. One way we are enabling this is by arranging and hosting several events both locally in the North West and Nationally with our fellow Programme partners.

In the last couple of months over 200 delegates have attended two themed events, the first held on 18th January and led by the Midlands Aerospace Alliance was hosted by Rolls-Royce Derby. The second led by ourselves was held at the University of Central Lancashire Drone Centre, Preston on 23rd February.

These two events alone have successfully promoted the developments of over 30 NATEP projects and we are pleased to confirm the North West hosted National NATEP Showcase will take place on 28th March at Manchester Conference Centre where NATEP projects will again have the opportunity to present and exhibit their project outcomes. Paul Kahn, President of Airbus Group UK will open the Showcase and will be joined by other key industry representatives.

New Technologies for the Aero Engine Supply Chain (and more innovations from UK aerospace suppliers)

As the end user on 12 of the NATEP programme projects, on 18th January 2016, Rolls-Royce hosted the NATEP programme and over 140 delegates to hear more about New Technologies for the Aero Engine Supply Chain. This showcase event was held at Rolls-Royce’s Learning & Development Centre, Derby and the day was opened by Simon Burr, Director, Engineering and Technology - Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce.

Throughout the day, 22 NATEP projects, presented on their NATEP experience and project outcomes, many of which were intricate with the theme of the day. These projects encompass new product and process technologies and span the whole product lifecycle from design to manufacturing through to MRO.

The North West was represented by four of our projects:

• Fastening Forms in Composite technology – Lead Partner Rotite

• Low mass composite mould tool – Lead Partner Kaman Tooling Ltd

• Hydraulic Hand Tool – Lead Partner FE Robinson• Distortion and Residual Stress Control for Manufacture -

Silcoms

The NATEP projects were interspersed with the days other keynote speakers:

• Andy Page, Chair, NATEP National Steering Board and Chief Executive, Sharing in Growth

• Ben Davies, Composites Research Engineer, GKN Aerospace

• Robin Hill, Engineering Fellow - High Integrity Electronics, Head of Strategy and Innovation, Rolls-Royce,

• Steve Dennison, Head of Research and Technology, Control Systems, Rolls-Royce

• Chris Bradford, Chief of Externals, Centre of Competence, Rolls Royce

As part of the showcase event, there was also the opportunity for 12 of the NATEP projects to exhibit their results. The day was deemed a great success by all who attended, both exhibitors, presenters, speakers and delegates alike.

Emerging technologies driven by UAV’s ConferenceThursday 23rd February may be remembered by many as the day Storm Doris arrived, however for the 50 delegates who battled through the wind, rain and debris of Storm Doris to attend the joint NATEP Emerging Technologies Driven by UAV’s Conference and UCLan Drone Networking event, it will be remembered as an insightful afternoon.

Partners from nine national NATEP projects presented on the outcome of their NATEP funded research and innovation. These projects were also given the opportunity to exhibit and network with their fellow projects and attendees from the North West UAV and aerospace nationalindustry.

The afternoon commenced with a welcome from Dr David Bailey, CEO of NWAA who manage the NATEP Programme within the North West, this was followed by Dr Darren Ansell, Space & Aerospace Engineering lead of UCLan welcoming the delegates to the Civic Drone Centre and showing examples of the ground-breaking work and research which UCLan have been undertaking in the UAV field.

NATEP NEWS

General InformationThe National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) is a £40m Technology Development Programme Derived from a bid by the Aerospace Growth Partnership to the Government’s Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative, administered by Finance Birmingham. NATEP is primarily aimed at small and medium sized suppliers to help them develop their own innovative technologies to enhance their capabilities and increase their ability to win new business with higher tier companies anywhere in the world. Programme managed by ADS and delivered regionally by the members of the Federation of Aerospace Alliances, NATEP will support the development of at least 100 projects, creating and safeguarding 1200 jobs in the UK Aerospace supply chain.

The first Key note speaker Tim Murrell, Group Manager Lancashire Fire & Rescue was unfortunately called away shortly after arriving to help with a situation which had arisen in Blackpool, fortunately his colleague Chris Rainfearn was also in attendance and provided an interesting insight into the developments and use of drones by Lancashire Fire & Rescue which prompted many questions from the audience.

Following Chris, five NATEP projects (listed below) gave a brief overview of their developments before a pause for coffee and networking. The second phase was kicked off by the second Key note speaker, Colin Turner from Leonardo Helicopters who gave a very thought-provoking presentation to the audience on potential opportunities and next steps following NATEP.

• Project SAFER: Lead Partner - The Great Circle

• Hoversafe - the revolutionary new micro-UAS: Lead Partner - Autonomous Technologies Ltd

• Precision Backup Navigation for UAVs: Lead Partner - Forsberg Services Limited

• TIVA – saving lives with technology: Lead Partner - Remvox Limited

• Heavy Fuels for UAVs: Lead Partner - Rotron

The final four projects (below) concluded the NATEP section of the afternoon with more networking and business card exchanges within the Drone Networking session.

• Thrust-Vectoring Shrouded Fan for a Hybrid UAV: Lead Partner - VTOL Technologies

• SPARCS Rotary Engine for Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: Lead Partner - Advanced Innovative Engineering

• UAV Engine Durability: Lead Partner - Rotron

• Small Rotary Engine Technologies: Lead Partner - A&M EDM

A thank you must go to those who managed to beat the elements and attend, but also to those who tried but were beaten by Storm Doris.

Heathrow expansion set to impact UK skills and jobsIn October last year, the government backed the proposal to add a third runway to Heathrow. The long-awaited decision was met with mixed reactions, but has been largely welcomed by the business community. Neil Cayley, Lead Consultant for Aerospace, Defence & Aviation at Jonathan Lee Recruitment discusses the potential impact the third runway will have in terms of skills and jobs.

The expansion of Heathrow has been on the table for nearly a decade, but in the months since the Brexit vote, the case for investment gained momentum. Historically a major hub, Heathrow has 160 non-stop flights but has been overtaken by neighbouring hubs Paris CDG and Amsterdam along with fast-developing airports such as Dubai, all boasting flights to more than 200 destinations. With current capacity running at 98%, Heathrow has been limited in what routes and airlines it could accommodate.

According to the Airports Commission the expansion of Heathrow will create up to

180,000 jobs nationwide, 95,000 of which are in manufacturing, including 26,000 jobs in the UK’s ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

The creation of 95,000 manufacturing jobs in the UK is substantial and will have a particular impact on the aviation and aerospace sectors. Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) expertise is already in short supply and, with an additional 260,000 flights per year that will need support services, demand for engineers to deliver safety critical services and ensure that planes operate at optimum efficiency will continue to grow.

Aircraft engineering is a highly skilled and precise role and high calibre engineers are already difficult to source. Preparation for the future is vital. Skills planning and people development will be as important a part of the success of the airport expansion as the construction and operation.

With the shortage of MRO engineers, widely predicted for some years now, it’s imperative that both the government and higher education in the UK address the future increase in demand as soon as possible.

Capacity to add a further 40 destinations will increase the UK’s

ability to build trade links with emerging markets in Asia and South America; we trade twenty times more with countries with whom we have a direct air link. This will be vital as the UK develops its own trade agreements once leaving the European Union.

The next stage is critical. With Brexit looming, the UK needs to exploit trade prospects and boost its economy, and much of this success hangs on Heathrow being expanded into a fit-for-purpose trade hub for the whole UK. If the experts are right, this is a prerequisite for securing between £61 billion and £211 billion for our economy , but it is essential to act fast.Skilled people will be a fundamental part of harnessing the full potential of the opportunity, and businesses up and down the supply chain need to start planning and investing in the workforce now in order to benefit from the future prosperity predicted by advocates of this landmark decision.

ISLE OF MAN NEWS

Breaking down the barriers to business growth David Hester, Chair of the Isle of Man’s Chamber of Commerce Engineering and Manufacturing Committee, looks at lessons which can be learned from how these sectors have overcome barriers to growth in recent years.

About 7% of the Island’s working population are employed in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. Many of the jobs are relatively high value requiring a highly skilled and educated workforce. Right now the engineering sector comprises two companies employing more than 200 people, one with more than 100 people and three with more than 50 people; plus a number of smaller companies. Having a number of larger businesses that are strongly connected to (and, in some cases, owned by) successful companies from other countries has many advantages for the Island.

The obvious ones are job numbers, and the disposable income which employees can choose to spend in the local economy – but there are less obvious advantages too. Isle of Man manufacturing plants owned by big, off-Island companies often benefit from significant capital investment in machines, facilities, IT systems and staff training. This is essential to allow these companies to continue to compete successfully in a global market by achieving excellence in product performance, on time delivery, quality, design innovation, and value. In turn, this is good news for the Island because it raises the skill level of Isle of Man engineers and technical staff, and makes these businesses attractive to the next generation of employees.

The Isle of Man’s manufacturing industry may not be the fastest moving, nor provide the large headline revenue numbers posted by other sectors – but this is far outweighed by the long-term advantages which stem from it being a stable, solid sector which is not highly volatile or subject to rapid disruption at the hands of changing regulations or political shifts.

However, it’s not long ago that the Island’s manufacturing sector had become static due to challenges which were acting as a barrier to

growth. In particular, recruiting skilled employees was a significant problem. A key factor in addressing this issue has been Government and the private sector working together towards a common goal, and Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce has played (and continues to play) an important role in advancing this process.

For example, Chamber’s sector committee for manufacturing set up the Awareness of Careers in Engineering (ACE) programme (which is part-funded by the Department of Economic Development), with a ‘Skills Champion’ promoting the sector in schools. This initiative had an impact on producing a significant increase in the number of school leavers taking up training opportunities, such as Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeships. Chamber supported the development of these apprenticeships, and the development of the Island’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre at Hills Meadow.

ISLE OF MAN NEWS

Mark Lewin, Interim CEO at the Isle of Man’s Department of EconomicDevelopment, commented: “TheIsland’s manufacturing sector continues to play a key role in the Department of Economic Development’s strategy to create jobs and drive growth on the Isle of Man. With over 70 years’ experience, this established sector provides excellent opportunities for well-paid employment and skills development with the assistance of an engaged industry and supportive government. We are also seeing some great innovation in the sector with enhancements in local companies, and new proposals from further afield. I am also delighted that the Department will continue to support the ACE

programme (Awareness of Careers in Engineering) which encourages our youth of today to become those high skilled workers of tomorrow.”

It is widely acknowledged that the Isle of Man needs to increase its working population to offset the public expenditure which will be required to support changing demographics. Manufacturing is providing many more jobs than some of the other, higher profile, industries on the Island, and Government recognises the balance and value this brings to the economy. It is for these reasons that Government continues to provide growth assistance to companies with a strong track record of achievement, and also why

it continues to support new companies which demonstrate solid business plans that will lead to a larger engineering sector with even more high value jobs.

Additional Heat Treatment Services Expand the Portfolio of Keighley Laboratories LimitedKeighley Laboratories Limited is a highly rated supplier of metal heat treatment services with over 95 years’ experience covering a substantial range of processes, materials and products, whilst serving a vast array of industries.

More recently a number of gaseous surface heat treatment processes have been added to the portfolio, to supplement the established and very popular surface treatments.

These gaseous surface treatments include:- GAS NITRIDING - standard and specialised, controlled by the latest electronics and software.

A process used to treat specialised alloy nitriding steels, more standard low alloy steels and some lean alloy or carbon steels. Due to the low treatment temperature (510° C nominal) distortion caused by the process is absolutely minimal, and surface hardness values exceeding 900 HV are achievable in some nitriding

steels. Even in leaner alloy steels such as 42CrMo4 surface hardness values exceeding 500 HV are achievable.

GASEOUS NITROCARBURISING - Including Ferritic, Austenitic and Special Processes.

This family of surface treatment processes follows on from the success of salt bath treatments such as Tufftride®. Whilst still being used, these are now being supplemented by technically similar processes carried out in controlled gas atmospheres rather than salt, to meet specific requirements of many primes. The Ferritic (Alpha) processes at low temperatures, typically 580° C, can replace salt-based processes in many instances. This produces a shallow nitrocarburised surface which can have substantial benefits in terms of wear and fatigue resistance, anti-galling and reduced surface friction. Unlike traditional gas nitriding which works best on steels containing more than 1% chromium or other nitriding elements,

Ferritic nitrocarburising processes work on a much wider range of materials, including cast irons, SG irons, mild steels, tool steels and many stainless steels.

Proven applications for Ferritic nitrocarburising already include hydraulic pump components and fittings, transmission components, machine tool components, automotive components etc.

The Austenitic (Beta) processes involve higher temperatures, but still less than conventional carburising, and can offer many addition benefits where greater hardened depths or increased surface hardness are required. Applications for these special processes are still being developed, though variants have been used in automotive engineering for several decades.

These additional surface treatment processes compliment the range of heat treatments that Keighley Laboratories offers – gas carburising, carbo-nitriding, austemper / martemper, induction hardening, traditional quench & temper, normalise, stress relieve etc.

Keighley Laboratories operates under metallurgical control, with experienced independent metallurgists on hand in our UKAS 17025 testing and analysis facility. This includes a Metallurgical Consultancy service providing technical and practical advice on your materials and processes, for these newer surface treatments and most other heat treatments.

Dormer Pramet has thrown its support behind the training of the UK’s next generation of engineers.

The global cutting tool manufacturer has become a patron of the Manufacturing Technology Centre’s state-of-the-art training centre - the Lloyds Bank Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre (AMTC).

As part of the agreement, Dormer Pramet will provide a wide assortment of round and indexable tools, product support material, literature and advice to the Coventry-based centre over the next three years.

It all adds to the company’s long-term commitment to support and increase the knowledge of young engineers about cutting tools and machining processes.

The MTC, opened at Ansty Park in 2011, has become a leading centre for developing new manufacturing techniques in the aerospace, automotive, rail, power generation and food & beverage industries.

Its aim is to bridge the gap between academia and industry, improving manufacturing processes through research and development and combining current techniques with modern operations, such as additive manufacturing.

The AMTC, which celebrated its first anniversary in November 2016, is an all-encompassing facility that includes automation, metrology and machine workshops, classrooms, conferencing facilities and restaurant.

The apprenticeship scheme, which recruits 40 apprentices per year, is available to applicants aged 16 and above, supporting their preparation for a work environment. Currently more than 120 apprentices use the centre and recruits gain a wide range of engineering skills in areas that underpin high value manufacturing.

Neil Fowkes, head of training, said: “The support from Dormer Pramet is excellent news for our young engineers, who will benefit from their vast industry knowledge and experience. Their cutting tools are renowned for delivering consistently

adaptable to all levels of machining.“They learn the principles for all machines, working in small groups with experienced and knowledgeable tutors.”

John O’Donoghue, managing director of Dormer Pramet UK, said: “The partnership with the MTC is another example of the continued support and assistance we offer to apprentices; from our technical handbook and in-house training through to easily-accessible advice from our team of sales engineers and technical specialists.

“The MTC’s training facility is fantastic and we are pleased to offer our support in this way. The centre has been designed to provide high level training for the next generation of engineers and technicians, covering basic skills and principles, through to advanced manufacturing techniques.

“Our cutting tools and product literature are the ideal combination to support the students through every step of their learning. They will give them the skills they need to work in a wide range of manufacturing industries and ultimately an exciting and rewarding career in engineering.”

high performance in a wide range of versatile applications.

“This then provides our students with an excellent base to develop their skills on our varied assortment of machines. Skills and experience they will take into a future career in engineering.”

The training centre focuses on three key disciplines, automation technology; including robots, drives and sensor technology; CNC machining, including computer aided design (CAD) and advanced 3D printing and metrology, the measurement and inspection of materials, products, coordinate measurement machines (CMM), including 3D scanning.

The MTC’s machining workshop provides a range of manual and CNC machines for apprentices to develop their skills in a variety of turning and milling applications. After their initial training, recruits can continue their apprenticeship at the MTC or in industry placements with engineering companies.

Fowkes added: “We offer a broad range of tasks to allow them to step-up their skills from using basic components with manually operated machines, through to programming modern CNC machines. We add new skills at each stage so the apprentices become fully

Ideagen acquires IPI SolutionsIdeagen Plc, the Nottingham-based information management software provider, has announced the acquisition of IPI Solutions Ltd for a net consideration of £5.54m.

Mansfield-based IPI Solutions has 400 customers such as GE Aviation, Sikorsky, Augusta Westland and Meggitt and will help to consolidate Ideagen’s position in key vertical markets.

A “profitable and cash generative” software company, IPI has developed Visual IP, a popular software application for quality and compliance reporting. The software already integrates with Q-Pulse, Ideagen’s flagship quality and safety management application, and the companies already had customers in common.

The acquisition of IPI is coherent with Ideagen’s strategy of acquiring businesses with strong IP and healthy recurring revenues. David Hornsby, Ideagen’s CEO, said: “IPI has established an extremely compelling value proposition and brings

to the Group a complementary solution, a talented workforce and long-term customer relationships that further consolidate our position in the Aerospace and Defence, Complex Manufacturing and Life Science verticals.”

Founded in 2005, IPI employs 17 staff and generates around £1.9m of annualised revenues of which £1.4m are recurring. EBITDA for the financial year ended 30 June 2016 was £600k and is expected to increase to £800k by FYE April 2018 as significant contracts are delivered and revenues are recognised.

Mr Hornsby added: “IPI has outstanding IP that is already integrated with Ideagen Group’s electronic quality management application, Q-Pulse, and extends our reach into manufacturing processes in three of our target verticals. We expect the acquisition to be earnings enhancing immediately.”

The purchase is Ideagen’s eleventh in nine years and its third in 2016 following the earlier acquisitions of Covalent Software and Logen.
