The NuFuel workshop was initiated by CEA-DEN and JRC Karlsruhe under the auspices of the European Energy Research Alliance’s Joint Program on Nuclear Materials (JPNM) in order to establish stronger and more-lasting collaborative links between European institutes, to provide a forum where dialogue between experts is fostered, and to give students and young scientists the possibility to present their work and discuss with experts in the field. The goal of MMSNF is to stimulate research on modelling and simulations of nuclear fuels to assist the design of improved fuels and the evaluation of fuel performance. The NuFuel workshop and MMSNF are highly complementary and by combining the NuFuel and MMSNF workshops for the 2019 edition, like in 2015, we aim at promoting communication and forging strong bonds between different groups working on this subject around the world. This 5-day course is dedicated to topics covering neutron transport, fluid dynamics and heat transfer. It can be followed either in-person classes or fully online and aims at presenting the main algorithms in the computer codes used by the industry and in academia for the macroscopic modelling of nuclear systems. The underlying methods used in such codes – together with their assumptions and limitations-, will be thoroughly presented, so that codes could be used with confidence. During the course, attendees will also have to develop a one-dimensional coupled model of a heterogeneous sodium-cooled reactor using the presented methods. The course is free of charge. Participants have nevertheless to cover their own expenses (travel, food, and accommodation).

ENYGF - EUROPEAN NUCLEAR YOUNG GENERATION FORUM 23 – 27 June 2019, Ghent, Belgium

The conference will cover both ‘classical’ and ‘less classical’ applications of nuclear – at least as we often perceive it in Europe. These ‘less classical’ aspects are indeed crucial for the advance of life standards, in Europe in the one hand, but then especially in developing countries. These advances will go through better access to energy, alimentation – purification of water and food conservation, improved land and agricultural practices, disease control and the further development of diagnostics and therapy in the medical sector, in particular for what concerns cancer treatment. In all field, nuclear applications might play a decisive role! The conference focuses on the role of nuclear for social and economic development, in particular in the medical field. Considering the wide range of expertise in the Belgian and Dutch nuclear sectors.

EUROPEAN CONFERENCIES FISA & EURADWASTE

5 – 6 MARCH 2019, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Two conferences were held in the field of EURATOM within the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union were held at the beginning of June 2019 in the Romanian city of Piteşti.FISA 2019 was the 9th European Commission Conference on EURATOM Research and Training in Safety of Reactor Systems, while EURADWASTE ´19 was the same in the Radioactive Waste Management. The events were held in Ramada hotel and in the Al. Davila Theatre: http://fisa-euradwaste2019.nuclear.ro/ The programme was rich, including the key political issues important for the future developments in the field, as well as presentations of the ongoing projects. There was place for discussions and for networking. To attract young generation, PhD student competition was launched, and there was a presentation of ex-cellent posters, giving possibility to speak with their authors. For nuclear waste, the EURAD project (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/223662/factsheet/en) is of great importance, its form being EJP - Eu-ropean Joint Programme Cofund. The project is just starting and it should last till May 2024. The joint pro-gramme is expected to generate and manage knowledge to support EU Member States with their imple-mentation of the Directive 2011/70/Euratom (Waste Directive). Participants in EJP Cofund must be legal entities owning or managing national research and innovation programmes.Apart of the main conferences programme there were very tempting technical tours in the end of the con-ference week, giving the choice to visit either TRIGA research reactor and Hot Cell Facilities and Nuclear Fuel Factory in Piteşti-Mioveni, or the ELI – Extreme Light Infrastructure in Bucharest-Magurele, or even Cernavoda NPP and Waste Management Facilities at Cernavoda-Constanta.
