ABSTRACT
Planktonic foraminijera from the Arroyo El Mimbral section at the Tampico region, including the ' 'K/T boundary clastic unit" are indicative of Biozone K27 (middle Maastrichtian). Samples taken immediately below and above the K/T boundary clastic unit lack A. mayaroensis which is the planktic index for the uppermost Maastrichtian. Foraminiferal fauna in this calcarenite unit includes only taxa observed in the underlying Méndez. If the physical stratigraphy (e.g., tektite layer, shock glass, iridium enrichment) of El Mimbral section is proven to be directly associated with an extraterrestrial impact on Yucatán, our biochronologic results from this section do not support the idea that this impact occurred precisely "at the K/T boundary", but rather in the middle Maastrichtian, before the chronostratigraphic ally defined K/T boundary. The anomalous iridium abundance occurs between samples EM30—20 and EM31D—8 assignable to Biozone K27, 36 cm below the P. eugubina—FAD (First Appearance Datum) On the other hand, the base of the spherule bed is 2.60 m below the K/T boundary. The uppermost Maastrichtian K 29 biozone of the Gulf Coastal Plain of Mexico is further divided into K29Aj, K29A2, K29Bj, K29B2 and K29Bj based on the following planktonic foraminiferal biohorizons: 1) A. mayaroensis—FAD, 2) small globigerinas— FAD, 3) A. mayaroensis-LAD (Last Appearance Datum), 4) "G. " fringa-FAD, 5) "G." minutula-FAD; and 6) P. eugubina—FAD. Inconsistences in planktonic foraminifera taxonomy, and discrepancies in biostratigraphic practice across the K/T boundary sections as applied by previous authors to different regions impede precise biocorrelation of the Mexican data with other sections such as El Kef in northern Africa. Indeed, the aforementionedfactors may have led to a diachronous definition of the chronostratigraphic K/T boundary.
