Dear Friends in Christ,

The parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel wishes to extend its prayers,

support, and deepest sympathy as you mourn the death of your

loved one.

As Catholics, we believe that in death, “life is changed, not ended.”

Jesus promises eternal life to all who believe in Him. Eternal life is a

place where there will be no more sadness but only joy and

happiness that comes from being in his presence forever.

The Mass of Christian Burial is the liturgical celebration of the

Christian community for deceased. The focus of this Mass and of

every celebration of the Eucharist is the Paschal Mystery: the life,

death, and resurrection and glorious ascension of Jesus from the

dead. The Paschal Mystery assures us that one day all who believe in

Jesus will also share His resurrection.

This booklet is designed to help enable you to take part in the

celebration of Mass. It will guide you to select readings that may help

deepen your own faith as you mourn the loss of your loved one. It

also describes other ways that you can take part in the celebration of

the liturgy on the day of the burial.

We invite you and your family to prayerfully go through this book

and decide how you would like to participate. On the back page is a

form where you can indicate your choices. After you have chosen

please give that form to the funeral director or the Deacon or Priest

who will visit you at the wake.

May God continue to bless you

Biblical Readings For Funerals

Generally one reading is done at a Funeral Mass. Feel free to choose

and copy any of the readings from the given list. The person who is

chosen to proclaim the reading should be used to speaking in public.

Please give your reader a copy of the reading that you choose so

they can practice it before the funeral Mass.

Although it is not required, if you want two readings done, then the

first reading must be from the Old Testament and the second

reading should be from the New Testament.

If you wish the priest/celebrant to choose the readings and/or

proclaim the readings, please indicate that on the worksheet before

returning it to the parish.

Old Testament Selection #1 Job 19: 1, 23-27

A reading from the Book of Job: Job answered and said: Oh, would that my words were written down! Would that they were inscribed In a record: That with an iron chisel and with lead they were cut in the rock forever! But as for me, I know that my Vindicator lives, and that he will at last stand forth upon the dust; Whom I myself shall see: my own eyes, not another’s shall behold him, and from my flesh I shall see God; my inmost being is consumed with longing. This is the Word of the Lord.

Old Testament Selection #2

Wisdom 3: 1-6,9 A reading from the book of Wisdom: The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet it is their hope full of immortality; chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. As gold in the furnace, he proved them, as the sacrificial offerings he took them to himself. Those who trust in him shall understand the truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect. This is the Word of the Lord.

Other Options For The Mass

Serving as Honorary Pall Bearers

Members of the family or friends may serve as Honorary Pall

Bearers during the procession into the body of the Church. Please

discuss this with the Funeral Director and mark it accordingly onto

the worksheet.

Bring up the Gifts of Bread and Wine

At every Mass the faithful present to the priest the gifts of Bread

and Wine that will be transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

We believe that along with the gifts the faithful present their

prayers, sorrows, hopes, and needs to God. We invite you to discuss

this option with your family and indicate whether you wish to do

this.

Words of Remembrance (“Eulogy”)

It is not necessary that a Eulogy be given at the Funeral. In fact it

may not be the most appropriate time or place for one. We invite

you to do a Eulogy at the wake service, or if you find it

absolutely necessary, at the funeral. We would ask that the person

doing the Eulogy at the Funeral follow the parish guidelines below.

1) The person doing the Eulogy is a person who feels comfortable

speaking in public.

2) The person should submit the text of the Eulogy to the priest at

the wake service.

3) The Eulogy should be no longer than 3 minutes long and should

not be contrary to the spirit of a Catholic Funeral Mass.

New Testament Selection #6 Romans 8:31-39

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones. It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ Jesus who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is the Word of the Lord.

New Testament Selection #12

Philipians 3:20-21 A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians: Our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself. The word of the Lord.

Old Testament Selection #4 Isaiah 25:6a, 7-9

A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah:

On this mountain the Lord of host will provide for all peoples.

On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils his peoples, the

web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever.

The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces; The

reproaches of his people we will remove from the whole earth: for

the Lord has spoken.

On that day it will be said:

“Behold our God, to whom we look to save us! This is the Lord for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” The word of the Lord.

New Testament Selection #2

Romans 5:5-11 A Reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans: Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have received reconciliation. The word of the Lord.

New Testament Selection #4

Romans 6:3-9

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans:

Are you unaware that we who are baptized into

Christ Jesus are baptized into his death? We were indeed

buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just

as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the

Father, we too might live in newness of life. For if we have

grown into union with him through a death like his, we

shall also be united with him in the resurrection. We know

that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful

body might be done away with, that we might no longer be

in slavery to sin. For a dead person has been absolved from

sin. If, the, we have died with Christ, we believe that we

shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from

the dead, dies no more, death no longer has power over

him.

The word of the Lord.

New Testament Selection #5

Romans 8:14-23

A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans:

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of

God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back

into fear, but you receive a spirit of adoption, through

which we cry, Abba, “Father!” The Spirit itself bears witness

with our spirit that we are children of God and joint heirs

with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also

be glorified with him.

I consider that the sufferings of these present times are

as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.

For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation

of the children of God; for creation was made subject to

futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who

subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free

from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious

freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation

is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that,

but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, we

also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the

redemption of our bodies.

The word of the Lord.
