University and College

In general, there are 5 main areas of study at most universities/colleges

Arts/Humanities/Social SciencesLife/Health SciencesPhysical/Engineering SciencesBusiness/CommerceProfessional Programs

Course Selection for University

To enter any university in Ontario requires 6 grade 12 courses at the 4U0/4M0 level.

ENG4U0 is the one course that is always one of your six courses taken in grade 12

There are also certain pre-requisite courses which must be taken to be eligible for some programs.

Pre-requisites(examples)

Engineering for example requires ENG4U0,MHF4U0,MCV4U0,SCH4U0, SPH4U0 plus one other

Many Business Programs require math both MHF4U0 and MCV4U0

Many Science Programs require the maths plus 2 of 3 science courses

College

Entrance to colleges requires a high school diploma plus any pre-requisite course needed for admission

A minimum % in a grade such as English may be needed as well (ie. 65%)

There is no overall average as in University as students can have a combination of academic, applied and Coop courses.

Degree and Diploma

Some colleges will provide a college degree(4years), diploma(2years) or certificate(1year)

You still require 6 4U0/4M0 courses to qualify for this college degree

Courses at the 4C0 level is all that is needed for a diploma or certificate

OTHER

Remember your 40 hours of community service or you do not graduate

Also make sure you are taking courses which will earn your high school diploma

This means 30 credits where 18 are compulsory and 12 optional

Important to look at your status sheet

Co-op Option

Students can take a 4 credit option or a 2 credit option

At the same time students can start accumulating hours towards a possible future apprenticeship through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP)

Course Selection Process

On-Line option sheet selection will be available from February 11th – 19th.

Now is your time to speak with teachers about courses you are interested in taking

In addition, counsellors are available to assist you with your decisions

Full/Cancelled Courses

It is important that students have a good idea of courses they intend to take

Number of sections are determined by your choices(ie. a new section will not be created with only 10 students)

Once a course is full students will be put on a waiting list
