  • OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS/STUDENTS TO SEE A COUNSELLOR

Parent and student questions are often answered when they attend the presentations done by our

    Counselling Team - February 4th

In order for WGSS to determine what courses will be offered next year, all students need to enter their

    course requests before Spring Break.

After Spring Break, families will be able to review in MyEdBC the courses WGSS will be attempting to

program students into for September (with the exception of Study Block, Student Aide and Leadership in

    Gator Pod).

Once students have entered their courses into MyEdBC, there is still the opportunity to change those

courses during a meeting with a counsellor before June 1st.

During Parent-Teacher Conferences (Wednesday, March 11) parents may book a 10-minute

appointment to ask a counsellor their course planning questions.

    GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    Every institution has different “General

    Admission” requirements

There are the 5 General Admission

    Requirement factors you should check

    Search the “Undergraduate Admission” section

of the university’s website to review the

    General Admission Requirements for that

    institution

Note: All institutions require you to meet BC

    Supplemental Application

    (E.g. Commerce Faculty)

    Each university faculty has “Specific

    Admission Requirements”

Here are some examples of the common

    specific admission criteria:

    16

  • 17

    ACADEMIC GRADE 12 COURSES

    • Institutions often have a specific number of Grade 12 courses reviewed for admission – e.g. 3-6 Grade 12 courses, one of which is always your English Language Arts 12 mark

    • Many universities outside BC use 5 or 6 approved Grade 12 courses

    • Applicants need to check if the institution has an “Approved Academic Course List” on the website

    • Pre-Calculus 12 is required by the majority of the Science, Applied Science, and Business programs at research universities

    • AP Calculus 12 is required for most Engineering/Applied Science university programs

BC’s new curriculum for Grade 12 courses came into effect July 2019; some institutions have not fully

updated their course lists but will be using the equivalent course.

  • UBC ADMISSION

    2019

    In March 2018, UBC

    announced they were moving

    away from “Grade 12

    Approved Course Lists” and

    instead would be evaluating

    students more holistically

    looking at the student’s Grade

11 and 12 courses to consider

    their depth, rigor, and

    relevancy to post-secondary

    studies.

CHANGES TO SFU’S ADMISSIONS AS OF 2019

Based on research, SFU changed admissions to

reflect the high school courses which were a good

predictor of student success in the program

    selected.

Applicants must now carefully review the program-

specific approved list to see which 5 courses are

required for admission to the desired program.

Admission evaluation is based on all Grade 11 and 12

courses from SFU’s approved course list.

    REPEATING COURSES

UBC, SFU, UVIC will take the highest course mark for any academic Grade 11 or 12 course – no penalty is applied.

Waterloo – Engineering students are penalized 5% off their overall admission average for taking a course a second time to get a higher mark

U of Toronto – The Faculty of Arts & Science does not recommend students repeat courses and reserves the right to give preference for admission and scholarship consideration to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course.

U of T – Rotman Commerce program considers only the first attempt mark.

McGill – averages the grades of all attempts of the same course
