PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT

COMPONENTOF CPS

Page 2: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

In preparing to use CPS, keep in mind that it is not an all –purpose process or panacea.

There are many times, places, and situations for which CPS is well suited –and others for which it is not.

Page 3: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

Therefore, since a contemporary approach to CPS should include tools to help you to determine when and how to use CPS effectively and appropriately, we developed a management component called PLANNING YOUR APPROACH.

Framework of CPS

Page 5: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

Doctors prescribe specific treatments or responses once they understand the nature of the illness, injury, or condition. You would be suspicious of a doctor who gave you a remedy and then asked you what was wrong.

THE SAME IDEA HOLDS TRUE WITH SOLVING PROBLEMS EFFECTIVELY.

Page 6: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

It is important and necessary to understand the nature of the task before you decide to use CPS.

1. Appraising Tasks

A task is any job, piece of work, assignment, or activity that needs your attention, effort, and energy. It might have been given or assigned to you by someone else, something you initiated, or the by-product or combination of unique circumstances.

Some tasks call for responses that are meaningful, novel, or original.

PEOPLE:Understanding the people involved

Identifying and examining the key players involved in a task is more than simply naming the people involved. It includes understanding how they are involved, how they will interact and work together, and the ways in which they will define, structure, and deal with the task.

Page 10: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

It includes gathering information such as peoples’ ownership and the clientship related to the task.

Page 11: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

If people have ownership of the task, they have interest in working on it, the desire to use their imagination to think of new ways to address it, and the influence or clout needed to effect changes on the task.

If ownership, is not present, the likelihood of any new change happening is low.

Page 12: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

Understanding clientship is equally important. Knowing whether the people involved have the responsibility for action will influence the likelihood of decisions being made and effective action taking place as a result of using CPS.

Page 13: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

Also different people’s problem-solving style preferences play an important role in effective problem solving.

There are three important dimensions of problem-solving styles:- Orientation to Change- Manner of Processing- Ways of Deciding

Page 14: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

- Orientation to Change dimension concerns preferences people have for the kind of change they like to create.

«Developer» style,

use structure and

boundaries to find

new thinking inside the

box.

«Explorer» style,

produce new thinking outside the box.

Page 15: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

This will influence how they define

challenges and opportunities, the nature of the ideas they generate, and the energy they put into

planning for action.

Page 16: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

-Manner of Processing dimension concerns how people think about their ideas and when they choose to share them

İnternally

Will share ideas after much thought and reflection, seeking confirmation for their ideas

Externally

Will offer ideas that are seedlings, looking for input and refinement

Page 17: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

- Ways of Deciding dimension concerns what people emphasize first when making decisions.

People who focus on the task first consider the logic and quality of the outcome when deciding

people who focus on the people emphasize issues such as harmony in relationships when making decisions

Page 18: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

ALL THREE OF THESE DIMENSIONS:

- Orientation to Change

- Manner of Processing

- Ways of Deciding

WILL HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON WHAT YOUR APPLICATIONS OF CPS ARE, AND THEY NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND CONSIDERED AS YOU PLAN TO USE CPS.

Page 19: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

CONTENT: Understanding the desired results

Understanding the task’s most important starting point also helps determine the appropriateness of using CPS.

You may need to start with an alternative method of problem solving before using CPS.

Exm: Team&conflict

Page 20: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

CONTEXT: Understanding the situation

Examining the context helps you understand the likelihood of action resulting from your CPS efforts. It also promotes an understanding of the opportunities that might exist for applying CPS.

Page 21: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

If the context is ready, willing, and able to support people taking action, it increases the chances of CPS being appropriate.

• Exm:

A context is ready for CPS when people are open to considering new ways of thinking and acting. «One more thing to do» is not the best thing to do at that time, in that environment.

Page 22: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

• The context is willing when the task is important and a high priority for the people involved

• The context is able to support CPS when there are the people, physical, and fiscal resources necessary to effectively adress the task.

Page 23: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

METHOD: Understanding the process options

• Your understanding of CPS, its potential to adress a task, and the availability of other processes will also influence your decision about applying CPS.

Page 24: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

Briefly;

If you have the right people, who want a new and useful outcome, are in a situation that calls for change, and are willing to invest the costs to get the benefits, the task may be appropriate for CPS.

Page 25: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

For different tasks, with different participants, and in varied settings, there may be many possibile ways to obtain the information, ideas, or directions you need.

If you do determine that CPS is appropriate, you can use Designing Process stage to create a specific application plan.

Page 26: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

2. Designing Process

Whenever you are working with CPS, you will often be called on to be a productive thinker in a variety of different ways. You will need be able to use your creative and critical thinking skills in relation to the content of the problem. That’s the most obvious case.

Page 27: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

You will also need to be equally productive , effective, and efficient in several other ways. These are often described as the executive or management skills of CPS, or in more formal terms, the metacognitive skills.

Page 28: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

You will need to develop an effective plan for applying CPS. Because CPS is a broad framework, you will need to tailor its use for the specific task through process planning.

Page 29: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

During the Designing Process stage, you will use that understanding to:• Determine the scope of CPS application (session,

project, initiative)• Determine the level of CPS application (individual,

group, organization)

Page 30: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

• Confirm specific clientship and ownership• Clarify the CPS roles if necessary (client,

facilitator, and resource group member)• Link the task need to the CPS process

(component, stage, tool)

Page 31: PLANNING YOUR APPROACH: THE MANAGEMENT COMPONENT OF CPS

• Prepare to apply CPS (individually or with a group, as appropriate) and

• Verify your understanding of the CPS language or vocabulary.
