ABSTRACTInfrared condition monitoring techniques offer anobjective way of assessing the condition of plantequipment.Infrared Thermography is a condition monitoringtechnique used to remotely gather thermalinformation from any object or area, converting it to a

    visual image.

INTRODUCTIONo All electrical components have a tendency

to heat up as their electrical propertiesdeteriorate.

o Temperature is a key variable in virtuallyany situation and for all processes.

o In industry, radiation will result if anycomponent is over heated.

o All this radiation around us can be imaged, measured and stored by an infrared systemfor analysis.

Electrical Distribution Systems What Can Be Detected:

    Loose/deteriorated connectionsOverloadsImbalanced LoadsOpen Circuits

    Inductive HeatingHarmonicsDefective Equipment

Benefits: locate problems quickly, withoutinterrupting service

drastically reduce costly, unscheduledpower outagesminimize preventive maintenance timeand maximize troubleshootingeffectivenessprevent premature failure and extendequipment life

Mechanical Systems What Can Be Detected:

Misalignment of coupled equipmentOver/under lubrication of bearingsOver/under tension of belted systemsExcessive frictionDefective Equipment

Benefits: quickly locate misaligned coupledequipmentincrease equipment reliability, production, efficiency and quality ofproductminimize downtime by planning the

required manpower and materialsbefore shutdownimprove worker productivity andmorale by correcting potentialproblems proactively

Structural Energy Loss What Can Be Detected:

Missing, damaged, or improperlyinstalled insulationEnergy losses caused by airinfiltration and exfiltration Water infiltrationDamaged refractory

Benefits: help reduce heating and coolingenergy costsevaluate thermal performance ofretrofitsidentify areas of latent moisturedetect conditions conducive tomold or insect problemsprovide hardcopy proof ofproblems

ADVANTAGESInfrared inspection is non-contact.Infrared thermography is two dimensional.

Electrical equipment can be inspected during itsoperation.Reduced inspection costs and time.Pinpointed maintenance can be carried out without inflicting needless damage on thesurrounding area.

ComparisonsThere are many relative merits in IRT whencompared with the Conventional MaintenanceProcedures. Maintenance Cost Processing Time Simultaneous Inspection

    Safety Factor Automation

    ConclusionOnce the upset had occurred,

thermography was key in locating andmonitoring the affected areas thus allowingthe inspectors insight into what washappening. This was accomplished with theunit online at normal production levelsinstead of shutting down prematurely, whenneither parts nor manpower were available toeffect proper repairs.

Infrared Imaging is an Effective Condition Monitoring System .
