QR CodesMachine-specific QR codes will hold all health and safety information required by a customer.

This will include the latest pre-hire inspection, service inspection and a LOLER inspection if this is required for the machine.

There will also be COSHH MSDS sheets for grease and oils used on machines, along with risk assessments for servicing and maintaining equipment.

The machine specifications will also be readily available simply by scanning the code with a smart phone.

Care PackageThe Selwood Care Package is NOT insurance. It is a waiver of Selwood Plant’s legal right to recover repair cost from the hirer.

How much does it cost? The Selwood Care Package is charged at 12% of the weekly rate of equipment on hire, where a customer has opted to pay for the policy.

What does it cover? The Selwood Care Package will cover all repair expenses and accidental damage, except those specifically listed under “Exclusions”. It also includes use of the Trackunit system, details of which are overleaf.

How much could it save? The value of Selwood Care Package waiver is easily demonstrated when you consider what can go wrong.

Green BeaconsOn many construction sites it is now a requirement that machines be fitted with a seat belt warning light system. The wearing of a seatbelt is identified by a green flashing beacon mounted in a prominent position.

Note: Green Beacons must be removed if the machine is being used on the highway.

Tablet systemSelwood bespoke digital mobile workforce system can give the customer date and time stamped copies of their delivery and collection paperwork, along with covering photographs of machines delivered to or collected from site.

Travel AlarmSelwood is committed to

supplying equipment above and beyond the latest health and safety standards. New excavators into the fleet are supplied with travel alarms fitted as a standard.

This alarm gives an audible warning that the operator in the machine is tracking backwards or forwards so that anyone in the vicinity of the machine is aware of that movement and can take appropriate action to maintain their safety.

Proximity SensorsThe Proximity Warning System is an audible and visual warning system designed to reduce the risk of vehicle-personnel collisions and can be used anywhere the proximity of people and vehicles working together is of concern.

DumpersWe offer a variety of JCB, Terex and Thwaites dumpers ranging from 1 to 9 tonne payload. Selwood can also provide road legal dumpers with lights and tax.

Use On RoadsA selection of dumpers have been fitted with road lights and registered for road use, for a small additional charge.

Hirers are responsible for ensuring that they have the adequate insurance to cover use on the highway.

Note: Green Beacons must be removed if the machine is being used on the highway.

Brake TestingAll wheeled equipment supplied by Selwood will be service brake and handbrake tested with a DVSA approved tester.

This determines braking efficiency of both the service brake (foot brake) and handbrake by measuring the rate of deceleration from a speed of around 20 mph until the vehicle comes to rest, giving the customer satisfaction that when delivered, equipment is tested to the highest possible standards.

VCASA Vehicle Collision Avoidance System (VCAS), developed as an aid to safety for detecting objects within a predetermined field, can be hired and fitted to 3 tonne dumpers and above, at a small additional charge.

CITBCITB is the Industry Training Board and a partner in the Sector Skills Council for the construction industry in England, Scotland and Wales. Its job is to work with industry to encourage training, which helps build a safe, professional and fully qualified workforce.

Any item of equipment can be dangerous if it is not used correctly. Our staff will be glad

to demonstrate the proper and safe use of equipment on request and customers are advised to take advantage of this service.

Safety DevicesThe hirer must not disable or adjust any safety or protective device fitted to the equipment and must not increase any governed speed or working pressures.

Warning NoticesThe hirer must not remove or obstruct any warning notice on the equipment.

Risk AssessmentUnder health and safety legislation there is a general duty on employers to take reasonably practicable steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and others, such as members of the public. Employers also have a general duty to inform their employees of the risks to their health and safety associated with the work they do and the equipment they use. Selwood believes that when equipment is supplied there is no significant risk until it becomes operational. Once put in to use the degree of risk will depend upon the competency of the person and the circumstances in which the equipment is used. These matters are under the control of the hirer and as such should be taken into account when performing a risk assessment.

Method StatementsThis should reflect the risk assessed in any operation and the controlled manner in which it should be undertaken. These can be provided when requested.

Safety Information SheetsThese are issued for the different types of equipment that Selwood supplies and it is important that these instructions are read before using the machine. At Selwood, we value all our customers and therefore provide this information and assistance to ensure the safety of all operators and to outline the effective maintenance and reliability checks necessary to ensure trouble free operation.

It is the general duty of the hirer, under current health and safety legislation, to provide adequate training and instruction to all employees and the information that Selwood supplies is intended to supplement that requirement.

In the event that a fault or breakdown should occur during the hire which may affect safety then the local Selwood Branch must be notified so that the equipment can be repaired or exchanged. Selwood cannot accept any responsibility if the hirer continues to use the equipment before repair. Selwood undertake to deal with such defects as a matter of urgency.

If at any time you require further information regarding any equipment please do not hesitate to contact your nearest Selwood Branch.

Inspection & TestingIn order to comply with manufacturer’s recommended servicing frequencies and legislation regarding the testing of equipment, we would ask for the client’s cooperation to assist in the access to equipment to undertake this work.

All mobile wheeled equipment is checked using Bowmonk technology for service brakes and handbrake efficiency testing prior to every hire.

The Selwood computer servicing system produces a 10 day warning prior to when the work is required and this will be notified to the customer so that appropriate arrangements can be made. The testing is carried out using our own service engineers who are trained to NVQ Level 3 standard. They have also been trained by a CITB course in Testing and Inspection which includes Thorough Examination.


Safety Information

Safe Working PositionBefore operating ensure unit is positioned safely and securely.

OilOil is toxic. If you swallow any oil do not induce vomiting, seek medical advice. Used engine oil contains harmful contaminants which can cause skin cancer. Do not handle used engine oil more than necessary. Always use barrier cream or wear gloves to prevent skin contact. Wash skin contaminated with oil thoroughly in warm soapy water. Do not use petrol, diesel fuel or paraffin to clean your skin.

Exhaust GasesDo not operate the machine in confined spaces without good ventilation. Breathing exhaust gases could harm or possibly kill you.

SparksExplosions and fire can be caused by sparks from the exhaust or the electrical system. Do not use the machine in a closed area where there is flammable material, vapour or dust.

Hot SurfacesUnder normal working conditions the engine components, particularly the exhaust, will get hot – do not touch. The hydraulic oil, pump, valve and tank can also reach temperatures high enough to burn – do not touch.

Hydraulic FluidFine jets of hydraulic fluid at high pressure can penetrate the skin. Do not use your fingers to check for hydraulic fluid leaks. Always wear eye protection during examination of the machine whilst running. Do not put your face close to suspected leaks. Hold a piece of cardboard close to suspected leaks and then inspect this for fluid. If hydraulic fluid penetrates the skin, get medical help immediately.

Clean FuelWith modern engines requiring clean fuel, all Selwood branches have fuel polishing machines that are used to clean the fuel tanks after every hire.
