President’s Message

Cindy Hammer, L. Lewallen Co.

It has been an exciting year and I have truly enjoyed the challenge of

being President of the largest section of SPE. This is my last Presidential article and it has been a wonderful experience working with the Board and Committee Chairs to achieve our goals.

Our theme this year was, “The Year of the OEM”, and the Detroit Section held some impressive technical events over the past eight months that included speakers from Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. Each OEM brought vehicles as part of their discussions and it was wonderful to have the visualizations available for the attendees.

In addition to the OEM presentations, the Section has organized two educational conferences; the annual TPO conference held in October and Auto EPCON, a conference that focuses on engineering plastics, held in April. I hope you had a chance to attend one of these great events.

Our next technical meeting will be an educational opportunity that you won’t want to miss. Krauss-Maffei will be our host and they will discuss the latest developments in processing technology for automotive interiors. This event should be of interest to engineers, sales staff and even managers to expand their technical expertise.

The SPE Golf Classic will be our final event until Fall 2008. The golf committee has changed the venue this year and the outing will be held at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township on June 2nd. Mark your calendars. We hope to see you there.

The Detroit Section is a national award winning section of SPE and it is only made possible by the individuals on the Board and the

Committee Chairs. I would like to thank everyone that has made this year a success. The past Presidents of the Detroit Section have helped me throughout my term by giving me suggestions, advice and support. Thank you Tom Powers, Nippani Rao, Norm Kakarala, Tom Pickett, Tom Miller, Mike Kirtley and Mike Hickman. These men have given many hours of their time and continue to support the Section each year after they have served their Presidential terms.

Another person I would like to thank is Don Root. He is a solid supporter of SPE and has always been there when you need an extra hand. Don organized the Annual Material Auction and the Annual Toy Donation program and made it look easy. When Don volunteers to help, you can trust that it will get done and it will be done well.

I would like to express my appreciation to Pat Levine and Marty Angell who have worked so hard to make our meetings run smoothly. They work with the conference centers, organize all the reservations and they pick up all the little things we forget. I cannot even begin to list all the things they do for the Section. Thank you.

Matt Carroll, Scott Nakon, David Danko, Jim Keeler and Sandra McClelland have been instrumental in organizing our programs and technical meetings. Jim and Sandra are upcoming Presidents and they both have excellent leadership skills. I’m sure they will be very successful during their terms. I would also like to thank Jason Lewallen who has been working diligently on our annual golf outing to ensure its success.

Several other volunteers of the Board that I must mention and have worked closely with the Conferences Committee are Ron Price, Craig Bellissimo and Gary Kogowski. There are approximately twenty people that volunteer their time each year to provide the technical conferences to the plastics industry. It is no small task and I thank you.

Our Education Committee has the incredible task of introducing and promoting plastics within the younger generations of society. The committee works closely with local schools and colleges. Greg Borchich, Lori Stephens, Tom Miller, Dennis Que and Wayne Hertlein do an amazing job.

Last but definitely not least, I would like to extend my

most sincere appreciation to Irv Poston.

Since I joined the Detroit Section Board approximately thirteen years ago, Irv has been a constant. He is reliable, genuine and always smiling. Over the last few years, Irv has taken on the time consuming, daunting task of the Detroit Section’s web information. He has become our web expert. Irv works on our electronic information continuously with Matt Carroll, Newsletter Editor, and it has not been overlooked nor unappreciated, even at the National level of SPE. Thank you Irv.

I wish Jim Keeler the best for his upcoming Presidential term and I know he will do exceptionally well. He has a great group of people to work with.

Emily Graffeo of the Chrysler Corporation presented to the assemblage on April 7th at

the SPE Detroit Section Dinner Meeting. Emily was named Senior Manager, Minivan Program Management in August 2003. She is responsible for all business aspects of the Chrysler Minivan programs. She most recently was responsible for managing the development of the new Minivans. Emily promised to be factual but could not commit to being unbiased in her analysis of the “Ultimate Family Vehicle.”

According to Ms. Graffeo, the minivan was invented in 1983 by Chrysler and has sold more than 12 million ever since. The 2008 models of the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan are the 5th generation minivans at Chrysler. Both have six inches of increased head and shoulder room along with an eight inch increase in rear sill width.

Many customers seem to be moving from SUVs into the new minivan these days. One definition of a minivan postulated by Emily is “If you lose the sliding door capability, you no longer have a minivan.”

The new models come with all the bells and whistles. In fact, one youngster called these vehicles the “car of the future.” Emily noted that “if the kids are happy, everyone is happy” which I

would update to “if the kids and spouse are happy, everyone is happy.” Some of the kid-friendly, rear seat accoutrements that are available include:

2• nd row heated seatsA conversation mirror to help •communicate with the children in the back,360 degree swivel rear seats•2• nd row power windows2• nd and 3rd row sunshades

Storage was also provided in every nook and cranny including

Dual top and bottom glove boxes•A sliding Center Console with multiple bins•Umbrella holders•

Other features that even Dad will like includeStow and go seats•24 mpg highway mileage with the 3.3L •engine

Primary resin suppliers for the project included A Schulman, Basell, BASF, Bayer, BP Amoco, Dow, Exxon Mobil, Sabic, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Solvay and Washington Penn. An example where plastics enabled the technology is in the “Swiss Army Knife” of center consoles. In conclusion, Emily stated that the new minivan utilized at least as much plastic content as the old version. Many Thanks to Emily Graffeo!!

Education Committee ReportGreg Borchich, Blue Water Automotive

As you know, this has been a tough economic year for the Detroit area. If one of your expenses is a child

majoring in a plastics related field attending college, the Society of Plastics Engineers Detroit Section may help. SPE-Detroit offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in the technical sciences that prepare one for a career in the plastics industry. The Detroit Section in particular has a long history of supporting undergraduate students demonstrating an interest in pursuing a career related to the plastics industry with annual scholarships.Detroit Section scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 school year are now being accepted. The application form and eligibility criteria are available at www.spedetroit.com and click on the scholarship fund link. Relatives of SPE members in good standing are given preference in the award process, no matter what school the student is attending, as long as they meet the qualifications as stated in the application. Those include taking a technical course of study in support of a potential career related to plastics.Last year, the Detroit Section awarded over $40,000 in scholarships for the 2007-2008 school year. We anticipate

being able to award a similar amount or more this year.In addition, the SPE Foundation offers additional scholarship opportunities to both undergraduate and graduate students. Check out www.4spe.org for more details on the various general and special scholarships available, and the application form. The Detroit Section specifically funds the Robert G. Daley Memorial Scholarship and we are funding an additional award. Also, your education committee has been busy promoting the education of our future plastics professionals. The following is a list of our activities for the year. The Detroit Section has again agreed to contribute funding to various schools for expenses incurred in attending and presenting at ANTEC this year. The Plastivan has been a huge success again this year. All of the schools that have received a visit have felt it to be a positive experience for the students. We are working with the universities that are within our jurisdiction to encourage active SPE Student Chapters. We have sponsored essay contest for local students.

Inter-societyWayne Hertlein, Progressive Components

The primary function of the inter-society liaison is to pass on information to our Board

of Directors and officers so that other groups’ activities are known by our members and so that we cooperate with these groups.

This month I am featuring the Engineering Society of Detroit, of which the Detroit Section of SPE is an Affiliate Society Member. In 1895, the Detroit Association of Graduate Engineers was founded and would eventually become the Engineering Society of Detroit. The past members of ESD read like the Who’s Who of the manufacturing industry. The main mission of the ESD Affiliate Council is:

To encourage cross-society cooperation and communication among officers of the Affiliate Societies by conducting activities that fulfill common interests and goals.

To promote peer recognition of noteworthy members of the Affiliate Societies through the Annual Gold Award and the Individual Society Award Program.

To enhance and broaden the knowledge of Engineering and the Sciences as multi-faceted and varied disciplines through involvement of the Affiliate Societies in educational activities and student programs.

To provide a mechanism for the Affiliated Societies to plan joint meetings, and obtain access to seminars and programs for professional or personal development.

To be the primary conduit for the Affiliated Societies interaction with The Engineering Society of Detroit and to ensure that members of the Societies are provided with benefits and opportunities in the ESD.

We have been active in participating in ESD functions by being a sponsor of the Future Cities Competition and providing judges to select the best incorporation of plastics. Also, we have had a nomination each year at the ESD Gold Award Banquet and our nominee was named the Grand Award winner in a previous year.

I encourage everyone to visit the ESD website (www.esd.org) when you have a chance to review the great things that they are doing for Detroit and for the State of Michigan. Please also take time to review the flyer in this newsletter that explains the benefits available to ESD members and members of ESD Affiliated Societies. Feel free to contact me or ESD if you want to know more about how you as an SPE member can take advantage of all of the ESD benefits without being a member of ESD.

One of the main reasons to be a sponsor and adver-tise in our Trends & Topics newsletter is to show

support for the many activities of the Detroit Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers. The Detroit Section has over 1000 members (making it the largest Section in the world) as well as being the Charter Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Sponsorships help cover the costs of preparing, printing, and mailing our monthly communications with our members. And, they let our members know where the extra level of support is coming from, not only for communication but also for education.

Last month, some of the advantages of being a Detroit Section Newsletter Sponsor were outlined as follows:

Sponsors get their ad in the newsletter, which is 1. on the web every time and is printed at least two times per year.

When the newsletter isn’t printed, their logo is 2.

on the post card that is mailed announcing the newsletter and current event.

They are listed as a sponsor in the newsletter 3. and in the monthly electronic News Brief email that is sent to 800 Detroit Section members with good email addresses.

Their ad is full color on the web and is 4. hyperlinked to their website. (Printed copies are red and black.)

Their listing in the newsletter and the monthly 5. News Brief is hyperlinked to their website.

They are entitled to write one “infomercial” 6. about their company for the newsletter each year including photos.

Come Join the Detroit Section SPE in a day of golf! $5000 worth of golf and door prizes, silent auction sports memorabilia, and also try for the opportunity to win $10,000 at the putting contest.

This year’s annual outing will be held on Monday June 2, 2008, at Cherry Creek Golf Course in Shelby Twp. The outing benefits the SPE Education Fund.

Companies who donate not only help the Detroit Section’s success, but also receive recognition throughout the plastics industry. Golf , dinner, and refreshments are included with $130 per

person registration fee. You may prefer to register for golf as foursomes for $520/foursome as we do not match up foursomes. Dinner only tickets are available for $50 each. If you would like to donate, please contact a chairperson as soon as possible, so we may recognize you properly at the golf outing. The outing does sell out so please send in your registration if you haven’t already. We would like to have registrations in by May 9th.
