Application Number: 07-0087 Filing Date: December 12, 2007 Applicant: East_Weed Seed Company Km. 54, Cagayan Valley Rd.,

Sampaloc, San Rafael, Bulacan Crop: Eggplant Proposed Denomination: Morena F1 Description of the variety: “Morena F1” is an eggplant variety with purple cylindrical fruits. Fruit length ranges from 24.0 to 29.0 cm based on several research and farmers‟ field trials during the wet and dry seasons

from 2004 to 2006. There are a few known commercial varieties in the Philippines that are comparable to “Morena F1”. The most commonly planted variety is “Casino F1”, which has long, cylindrical fruits ranging from 20.0 to 24.0 cm. in length. Aside from its longer fruits, “Morena F1” can easily be differentiated by its darker and glossier fruits than “Casino F1”. Clear differences can also be distinguished during vegetative stage, as “Morena F1” has darker pigmentation in shoots, darker green leaves due to its stronger anthocyanin coloration in the leaf blade, moderate trichomes on the stems and a spreading orientation of leaves and branches. “Casino F1”, on the other hand, had less pigmentation in the shoots and leaves, less trichomes in stems and a more compact orientation of leaves and branches.

Application Number: 07-0088 Filing Date: December 12, 2007 Applicant: East_Weed Seed Company Km. 54, Cagayan Valley Rd., Sampaloc,

San Rafael, Bulacan Crop: Eggplant Proposed Denomination: Banate King F1 Description of the variety: “Banate King F1” is an eggplant variety with

moderate purple cylindrical fruits developed mainly for the Mindanao market. Fruit length ranges from 25 to 28 cm based on several trials conducted in research and farmers‟ fields. There are no known commercial varieties in the Philippines that resembles “Banate King F1”. The most commonly planted variety is a farmer‟s open-pollinated variety known in different areas as “Banate, Señorita or Digos”. This OP variety has moderately long, cylindrical fruits averaging 24 cm in length.

“Banate King F1” can also be differentiated from the local OP because of its slimmer fruits than the farmer‟s OP variety. Clear differences can also be distinguished during the vegetative stage. “Banate King F1” has more branches with small to medium leaves and has the tendency to spread. On the other hand,

Page 17: Plant Variety Gazette Volume IV Table of Contents · Plant Variety Gazette Volume IV Table of Contents

Plant Variety Gazette Volume IV Applications

13

“Banate, Señorita or Digos OP” has fewer branches, with upward orientation and with medium to large leaves. Among the existing purple cylindrical commercial varieties grown in the field, the most popular is “Casino F1”. “Banate King F1” can easily be distinguished from “Casino F1” in terms of color, fruit size and plant characteristics. “Banate King F1” has moderate purple skin color, longer and slimmer fruits (averaging 26.0 cm long and 3.3 cm in diameter) than “Casino F1” (dark purple skin in color, shorter and slightly fatter fruits averaging 24.0 cm long and 4.2 cm in diameter). Also, the fruits of “Banate King F1” have distinct pointed blossom while “Casino F1” has roundish more branches with the tendency to spread while “Casino F1” plants have lesser number of branches and a common compact plant type. In terms of leaf and stem pigmentation, “Banate King F1” has lighter pigmentation than “Casino F1” which has dark purple pigmentation in the leaves and stems.

The variety that is closest in description to “Mutya F1” is the hybrid variety “Venus f1”. However, there are several distinct characteristics between “Mutya F1” and “Venus F1”. “Mutya F1” is easier in maturity (50% flowering at 44 days after sowing” than “Venus F1” (50% flowering at 54 days after sowing). The two varieties were compared in several trials and “Mutya f1” consistently showed higher yoeld (average of 16 fruits per plant) than “Venus F1” (average of 11 fruits per plant). “Mutya F1” fruits are short which averages 27 cm long while “Venus

F1” fruits are long with an average length of 40 cm. “Mutya F1” fruits are strongly spotted and almost perfectly cylindrical in shape with blunt fruit ends while “Venus F1” are moderately spotted and have an intermediate fruit ends giving it slightly tapered appearance. “Mutya F1” has slight aroma when cooked while “Venus F1” has no aroma at all.
