(“PHILPACK”) Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines Crop: Pineapple Proposed Denomination: „Red Phoenix‟ Description of the variety: Red Phoenix is a distinct new pineapple variety because its skin color turns bright red when fully ripe. The fruit has deep golden yellow flesh, high sugar content, mild acid, low fiber content, crisp and smooth in texture. Red Phoenix plant is medium in stature with an average plant height of 1.58 m with a semi-erect plant habit and with an open foliage attitude. The middle leaves are dark red-purple in color with an average of 44 numbers of leaves before forcing age. The D-leaf measures 86 cm in length and 5.6 cm in width with a dark red-purple from upper and lower surface. The leaves are spineless with a dark red-purple margin. The plant produces an average of 3 slips after plant crop harvest. The fruit has a conical to cylindrical shape with medium to small fruit size. The average fruit weight with crown is 0.88 kg, but only 0.81 kg without the crown. The average fruit length is 12.42 cm while the fruit diameter is 9.97 cm. The skin is smooth and thin and turns bright red in color when full ripe. The crown is conical in shape, deep red-purple in color, and has a smooth and spineless leaves. The flesh is deep golden yellow (13A in the Royal Horticultural Society color chart), average flesh density, uniform ripening, smooth texture, less amount of fiber and has a rich aroma. The flesh has an average brix of 18° and a total acidity of 0.40%.

The fruit has golden yellow flesh, distinctly very sweet, low in fiber content, mild acid, crisp and smooth texture. Its crown leaves are deep purple. The plant is medium in height with an average plant height of 1.71 m and has a normal growth habit. Foliage is arranged in a rosette, with an open foliage attitude, and with an average number of 47 leaves. D-leaf average length is 96 cm and average D-leaf width is 6.1 cm. The color of the middle leaves is dark red to purple. The leaves are spineless with only a few spines found near the tips. Breakage resistance of the leaves is medium.

The fruit is conical to cylindrical in shape, medium eyes, and shell color at full ripe is red-orange. Average fruit weight with crown is 1.26 kg but only 1.16 kg without the crown. Fruit height is 14.45 cm, fruit diameter is 11.28 cm, and height-to-diameter ratio is 1.28. Crown shape is conical with purple leaf color, smooth, and spineless margin but with few spines on the tips. The flesh color is golden yellow (13B on the Royal Horticultural Society color chart), with an average brix of 18° and total acid of 0.40%. The flesh is of medium firmness, crisp, and smooth texture, rich aroma, and small amount of fiber.

It is suitable for dry and wet season cropping using transplanting method of crop establishment. NSIC 2011 Rc268H is an early maturing variety (115 days) with a medium plant height of 113 cm and 12-13 productive tillers on average. It has a wide spectrum of resistance to diseases

and insect pests such as blast, blight, green leafhopper, white stemborer and yellow stemborer. It can be susceptible to tungro however. NSIC 2011 Rc268H has high milling recovery (66.4%, G1) and long slender grains. It has high sensory acceptability scores in both the raw form (86.7%) and cooked form (93.3%). It is white, slightly glossy, cohesive, tender, and tasty when cooked and has no aroma.
