Perennial, rarely annual, herbs, shrubs, succulent rosette plants to small pachycaul trees. Leaves dorsiventral, often succulent, sometimes terete, sheathing at base, often serrate-dentate and marginally spiny in succulent taxa. Flowers: in simple or compound racemes or spikes; bisexual, perianth segments 3 + 3, free, nearly free or fused into tube, white, yellow, orange, red or mauve, never blue-violet; stamens 3 + 3, filaments free, linear; ovary superior; style single with small apical stigma. Fruit usually a 3-locular, loculicidal capsule. Aloe family.
