An existing process for making higher alpha-olefins is the Shell Higher Olefins Process, which involves the oligomerization of ethylene using a homogeneous nickel-based catalyst. However, a subsequent distillation step is required to separate the wide distribution of alpha-olefins generated by the process. In the research study, two unique sets of oligomers, all 68 and higher, were generated. The researchers said that production distribution may be controlled further by modifying ligands and altering process conditions. They aim to market their first product, 1-butanol (they call it biobutanol) in the UK in 2007 as a gasoline component. BP and DuPont are working with British Sugar to convert the UK’s first ethanol fermentation plant to the production of 9 M gal/y butanol. DuPont’s CEO says fermentation-derived butanol can be competitive without subsidies when oil prices are $30-40 per barrel. According to DuPont, 1-butanol has a number of advantages over ethanol, including low vapour pressure and tolerance to water contamination in gasoline. Butanol can also be added to gasoline at higher concentrations than ethanol without having to refit vehicles. And butanol offers better fuel economy than gasoline-ethanol blends. Several agricultural materials can be used to produce butanol, thus corn grain, wheat, sugar beets, sugarcane, or sorghum. DuPont is developing a genetically engineered microbe that should significantly increase the conversion of agricultural feedstock into fuel. It is hoped the “Gen 2” biocatalyst will be ready by 2010. Chevron is also upping its commitment to alternative fuels. It is to cooperate with Georgia Tech, investing up to $12 M over five years on R&D to convert cellulosic biofuels and hydrogen into viable transportation fuels. BP and DuPont plan ‘biobutanol’
