What form does material the material come in before form-

Polymer grains

Forms/Shapes: What kind of forms can be made from this material after processing ?

This can be made into complex shapes. For example, Lego.

Tactile Qualities: What kind of tactile or quality of touch does the material possess?

ABS is a strong, rigid plastic that has a shiny, impervious surface. It is impact resistant and heat resistant (up to 80 C). It is resistant to many corrosive acids and humidity. It is susceptible to high temperatures and open re, and direct exposure to sunlight.

Texture/Patina: What sort of texture or patina does this material possess in its native form? Can this be used in VR device design?

In its raw form, ABS is translucent ivory to white colour. Pigments can be easily added to make any desired colour. This can be used for VR design since it can be easily molded into any shape, in any colour.

Fabrication Process. What kind of machining or physical alteration can be done with the material? e.g. concrete and steel can be polished. Steel can be perforated with holes etc.The common fabrication process for ABS is injection molding, which means it can be made into any shape. ABS lament can also be used in 3D printing. The nished material can be coated with layers of material to created a certain desired texture, and it can be painted in any design.

History: Show a brief timeline of 3-4 technological mile-stones of this material.

ABS has been available since the 1940’s (1948). It was created as a result of post-WWII research work emanating from the crash wartime program aimed at producing large quantities of synthetic rubber. Previous types of plastics were used in radar cables and boat-building

IAT336 nal projectPaper Paperboard

What form does material the material come in before forming?

Originally comes from brous material (often a type of wood), it is then turned into pulp and chemicals are added to separate lignin from the cellulose bers. The remaining pulp mixture is then compressed to create the desired thickness of paper.

Forms/Shapes: What kind of forms can be made from this material after processing ?

Paper pulp is almost exclusively used to make sheets of paper which are then further processed depending on how thick the sheet is, and how it can be manipulated into various folds and shapes. However they are almost entirely limited to sheets for the compressing and drying process involved reduces further manipulation outside of a “thin-square-like form”. After the sheet has set howev-er, it can be manipulated to almost any shape possible, from tubes to complex polygons, paper is a highly mal-leable material.

Material Properties:

Paperboard largely comes in two states, coated and uncoat-ed. Uncoated has a rough, natural feel akin to construction paper, whereas coated is glossy and smooth, almost like a photograph. Depending on manufacturing and the manufac-turer, the degree between the two can vary.

Paperboard and its ilk are not great conductors of heat, but many layers can be used as an insulator.

Texture/Patina:

As Paperboard is made from pulp (often from wood), it will share the same colorings as that wood (often a dark brown), but can later come in any color through a dyeing process during manufacturing. As for texture, paperboard can be manipulated chemically to suit the users need, but often will come in a smooth glossy state, or a matte, rough-like state.

Fabrication Process:

Paperboard can be physically manipulated into almost any shape, its biggest limitation is the form it comes in – thin rectangular sheets. Paperboard can be cut, drilled, bent, and more.

Finishing Qualities:

It can be painted and coated with a variety of chemicals to mimic other materials as well. Paperboard holds many different types of nishes and dyes very well due to the porous nature of paper. However, heavier liquids may damage the paperboard so experimentation is required on that regard.

Paperboard was rst produced in 1817 as a thicker more durable type of paper. It was used for packaging and printing, and was initially shipped at to save space. The rst milk cartons being made from paperboard in 1915. Now it is a broad, common material with many different uses and since the denition isn’t strict, there are a number of different grades of paperboard to differentiate them.

History:

Paperboard is often used as a craft or mockup material due to the cost, ease of use, and application. For example, architects may use paperboard to create models of the buildings they’ve designed.
