Usage of Plastic in Food HandlingSafer choice for use in food handling

1. Only use those plastic products that meet Government regulations on food handling (e.g. CFIA approved)

2. For products that come in contact with food, only use plastic that does not contain recycled content.

3. It is not safe to use plastic containers for microwaving food because the process of heating leads to the release of some chemicals from plastic which could be hazardous.

4. Avoid using plastic containers for storing fatty foods as there is a greater degree of leaching of chemicals into fatty foods.

5. Avoid using cling wraps in the microwave and if you do make sure that the plastic does not touch the food.

6. Always check the plastic label to select safer material for food handling.
