Underwing patterns: 1b C. d. borealis Primaries wholly dark, creating solid, well defined, broad black band on outer wing and rounded white underwing panel. 1c C. d. diomedea White wedges on inner webs of otherwise black outer primaries, resulting in narrower black band on outer wing and more angled white underwing panel. Non-breeding visitor, Mauritania–Gulf of Guinea. 1d Cape Verde Shearwater C. edwardsii Underwing pattern as 1b. 2 NORTHERN FULMAR Fulmarus glacialis 43–52 cm; WS 101–117 cm V Stocky; head and underparts typically white; upperparts pale grey. Potential vagrant from Southern Ocean. Vagrant/rare visitor from Southern Ocean, off- shore Congo. 6 CAPE CORMORANT Phalacrocorax capensis 61–64 cm; WS 109 cm V NT 6a Ad breeding Medium-sized; black; yellow-orange gular area. 6b Ad non-breeding/imm Dull brown, underparts paler; yellowish-brown gular area. Vagrant from southern African coasts, north to Gabon. [CD5:3a] 7 JACKASS (AFRICAN) PENGUIN Spheniscus demersus c. 60 cm V VU Stocky, flightless seabird, with flipper-like wings, and short legs and tail. 7a Ad Black face and throat surrounded by white; black band across breast down flanks. 7b Juv Sooty-grey head and upperparts. S African vagrant, Gabon and Congo. Floats with head held high and most of body submerged. On land, walks upright with waddling gait. 8 BALEARIC SHEARWATER Puffinus mauretanicus 30–40 cm; WS 76–93 cm V CR 8a-b Resembles Manx Shearwater (Plate 2:10), but brownish above; dirty greyish-buff below; dark axillaries and vent. Vagrant from W Mediterranean, recorded off Mauritania.
