Experts predict that BYOD will continue to gain momentum around the world, given

● the proliferation of personal devices at hand,

● shrinking IT budgets and

● the overwhelming costs involved in both issuing student devices, and

● in keeping pace with developments in technology.

Challenges• Different operating systems

(Microsoft, iOS, MAC OS X, Android) and different devices don’t always use the same apps.

• All these systems aren’t made to work together and each has its own faults.

Page 14: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

More Challenges. . .

• Content doesn’t always make it to students, and when it does, it may look and act differently for each child.

• Frustrated teachers interrupt class to call their IT help desks, leaving students disengaged or worse.

• It’s cumbersome to show students how to download or receive all variety of digital books, assignments, videos, and webpages to all variety of devices.

“Having a range of different devices in the classroom means that teachers will

need to be familiar with that broad range of devices,

mobile platforms, and apps to ensure students are

using them appropriately.”

-Ryan Faas, Cult of Mac

Agree or Disagree?

Page 17: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

“BYOD in the classroom is already happening.

You can’t ignore the tsunami of mobile

devices which students already own. Keeping

your head in the sand just means you will not have

any control over how this new proliferation of

devices are (sic) being used within your school.”

Let’s look at two solutions:1. Make your activities cross-

platform and device-agnostic wherever possible.

2. Use the cloud whenever possible.

“A device-agnostic application is compatible with most operating systems and may also work on different types of devices, including notebooks, tablet PCs and smartphones.” – Margaret Rouse

“Platform-independent” means

essentially the same thing.

“Device-neutral” has slightly different connotations but it’s

related.

A device neutral classroom is where:

1. A specific tool is not presumed2. Students choose whichever tool

they have available which meets the requirements

3. Students demonstrate their understanding by what apps and tools they use

“Start by taking the most popular devices that are out there and making sure your

applications, lesson plans, videos, or other content work on those devices.

Just make the assumption that whatever you’re developing or using has to work on iOS,

Android, or another platform, and then create an environment where your students can

learn, engage, collaborate, and communicate effectively.”

When Lesson Planning For BYOD - Think Ahead

Step 1

Look for apps that have at least the following 3 options. I will share some of these with you today.

Web-based

Apple iOS

Android

Step 2

Browser-based apps are the best for reaching the most students, in my opinion.

All the students may not see the exact same thing or the app may not function the exact same way but it will be close.

Step 3Step 1

Page 24: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

*Tip Regarding FLASH

iOS/iPads can’t play it unless you install a less-than-secure browser like Puffin. Having no Flash capability seems like a real problem at times because so many great educational resources need Flash to work properly.

However, Flash is a big security risk and is going away soon anyway. Specialists suggests we don’t use it at all and find other tools instead.

Video at http://www.thestar.com/business/tech_news/2015/07/15/widely-used-flash-player-in-trouble-over-security-problems.html

Step 3

Check with I.T. & thank them often.

(Bring Them Treats)

Try to find out which browser(s) they will support and recommend.

Ask all your students to install and use that same browser.

Think Ahead

Step 3

Page 26: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

*Tip

BYOD lessons can be structured for partner or group work.

Share devices when they fit the activities.

For example, if you use game-based software such as Kahoot! for test review,

students compete in teams.

This demonstrates that devices are meant for the good of the classroom community and not just individual students.

*Tip: Try to find & recycle some older devices. You’ll always need a few spares.

Old MobilesI can’t run many apps but

I can still get on wifi, display a browser, and

run some messaging services like Edmodo or Twitter. I can often read

QR codes.

E-Readers & Tablets

I may not be able to run all the fancy new apps

but I can usually access the internet can display

e-textbooks.

Netbooks, Chromebooks

Maybe the internet is slow or I can’t connect but I may have a word

processors, spreadsheets, and/or slideshows installed.

Just Kidding!

I can probably only help if you are doing role-

playing or having ELL’s practice speaking. They’ll enjoy the novelty of it!

*Tip: LET’S EXPLOIT THE SMARTPHONES

★ While a laptop or desktop can better meet the needs of many classroom assignments, and there are limitations to the use of a smartphone, this doesn’t diminish the opportunities the devices provide .

★ The obvious limitations of a device should not prevent its use altogether, especially as a supplemental tool.

They need adults to broaden their horizons and help them get out of their device- and platform-specific mindsets.

Students need us to show them how many of our various devices have similar functions and programs despite their differences.

What Do Students Really Need in BYOD Classrooms?

Page 30: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

★ Students need us to show them how to learn with technology.

★ They can usually figure out what hardware they want (or what their parents will buy).

★ However, they don’t know what learningware* to install until we teach them.

★ Although it really isn’t about the apps, they’ll need to know which apps work with which devices.

Young Superheroes want to be seen as decision-makers and capable -- yet they need a mentor to show how it’s done.

1) Let Them Use Their Superpowers - to increase understanding, not just replace paper-pencil tasks.

3) Let Home Know - Parents/guardians like being involved and they can carry on the mentoring at home!

4) Model Your Own Superpower - explain and demonstrate your technology use.

5) Have That Conversation When They Stray - in timing, use, or communications. Guide them back to the path.

What Do Students Really Need in BYOD Classrooms?

★ We don’t push them to a particular device or a software package that may not even exist in a few years; we help them sort the tools which they need to complete their task or tasks.

★ We don’t imply one platform is better than another--we guide students in building their own toolbelts, toolboxes, and learningware.

★ Education is about helping students prepare for any possible future, not our particular vision of a future.

B. What cloud storage do you

DISCUSSION

Page 40: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

Clarification Cloud Computing can mean using software and other services on the internet rather than on a device. For instance, Chromebooks store little or no apps on board--they are built to use the internet to access Google’s suite of services. Making a Word document

on Office 365 rather than install-ing Word on your device is cloud computing.

Comparison of cloud v. backup drives at: http://www.trickswindow.com/networking/backup-hard-drive-or-cloud-computing/

Page 41: Platform-Independent Device-Agnostic, Teaching … keeping pace with developments in technology. Technology is …

Clarification (continued) Cloud Storage means using an internet location to store your files but not necessarily to do your computing. The cloud can be private or public -- you choose which -- and it replaces physical memory sticks and hard drives. (Like OneDrive or Dropbox.)

These lines are actually blurred now with services like Google Docs, Office 365, etc.
