Living (and driving)

nightmareIt is not getting better. Every month-end and in between, the traffi c situation in Burgersfort and to a certain extent, Steelpoort, just become more horrendous. In Steelpoort nobody is giving the slightest consideration to road markings or stop signs, while in Burgersfort, every-body just do as they wish. Road rules at a large number of intersections are just ignored, which is not helped by the fact that there are almost no road markings and traffi c signs had been stolen, driven over or had been vandalised. In The mean time it is relayed to the newspaper that apart from doing generally nothing to order the chaos, some administrators of justice even have the audacity to demand and ‘apology’ if you drive over an intersection with a non-existent stop sign or road markings. Eish!

Giving hopeLet Grace Lead has partnered with the Mmotong Selema Education Foundation to reach out and touch learners. These two non profi t organisations focus on the holistic empowerment of learners through their school outreach campaigns.

This campaign has already involved over 6000 learners in the Burgersfort area in less than two weeks. The Mmo-tong Selema Education Foundation focuses specifi cally on empowering learners following formal or informal educa-tion routes. Thabo Mmotong (28), who is the co-founder of the education foundation, is passionate about educa-tion and ploughing back to communities. He gives career guidance and motivational talks. He started this campaign as a way of giving back to learners from disadvantaged communities. Thabo grew up below the poverty line but he managed to graduate from the university of Limpopo. His message of hope seeks to uplift people to rise each time they fall and to kick their way through life’s barriers.

MSEF encourages learners to do thorough research about the career paths they want to follow and to apply in time for learning spaces as well as for bursaries or other forms of funding. MSEF also mentors a few learners at secondary and tertiary school levels.Thabo says that pov-erty is not an excuse for failure. One can become anything they want be in life as long as they remain focused on their goals.

Sipho Hlakudi (26) the founder of Let Grace Lead Campaign says a soul is a soul and it is important to God whether young or old, LGL plans to get a million souls saved this year alone through it’s outreach campaigns at schools, clinics, hospitals, social media, door to door and everywhere where people can hear the message. Sipho believes in Mark 16:15 that says ...” Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

6 NEWS 5 FEBRUARY 2016

The Nkandla debacle this week took another turn as the Presidency issued a statement with regards to President Jacob Zuma repaying money for upgrades of non-security features at his KwaZulu-Natal homestead, Nkandla. Pressure has been mounting for months around the Public Protector’s report and the President’s reaction to it. Opposition parties has launched a #paybackthemoney campaign and is even taking the issue to court.

The statement released this week said: “While President Zuma remains critical of a number of factual aspects and legal con-clusions in the report, he proposes a simple course to implement what the public protector recommended as remedial action contained in the report.”

Next week the EFF and DA will be head-ing to court to try and have the steps Zuma is taking with regards to the implementation of the Public Protector’s report declared uncon-stitutional. The Public Protector recommend-ed that the National Treasury and SAPS determine the amount that the president should repay. He is however seeking to have the Auditor-General and Minister of Finance determine the amount.

The statement also said: “The report specifi cally found no wrongdoing of any kind by the president. It also found no benefi t for which the president could to any degree be required to compensate the state in relation to nearly all aspects of the project.

“But in relation to fi ve features of the pri-vate homestead the report directed a further process to be carried out by National Treas-ury in conjunction with the SAPS. This is to determine fi rstly a reasonable proportion of the item in question for which the President should recompense the State, and secondly the reasonable cost in that regard”.

Some items referred to in the statement apparently include features such as the swimming pool (fi re pool?), cattle kraal, am-phitheater and chicken run.

The statement pointed out that the amount payable by the President has never been determined: “The actual amount that the President is required to pay was not de-termined by the Public Protector who limited herself to setting out this process for the amount to be determined.” It also stated that not the EFF, DA or Public Protector respond-ed to his proposal in his answering affi davit in November last year.

Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about this turn in the #payback-themoney saga.

Ms Gertrude Mohlala said: “He is now trying to pay because of the elections this year. The ANC wants the votes and our president is looking like a tsotsi. We need our money so it is good if he pays”.

Mr Jan Mapote and Ms Lindiwe Kgwete said: “He is now trying to repay because of the state of our economy. He wants to come clean. We think he is frustrated about this and is also com-ing close to the election. Many people left the ANC because of this. The President just wants to be clean from this thing”.

Mr W. Nice said: “It’s politics. It is now time for voting and it will be good for the ANC to say he paid back the money so they can brainwash voters. This way they will win, but Zuma will not be trusted again because of this”.

Ms Pinky Nkuna said: “I think Zuma will not be able to pay back the money before the elections. They (the ANC) are afraid of the election and are now just going to promise. I think he must pay back the money. It is the people’s money”.

Mr Magnet Mmadi said: “I think he is afraid that the ANC will lose the election if he does not pay. It will repair the damage he’s done to the nation”.

Mnr.

Ms Linky Malepe said: “He must pay back the money. It is the nation’s money. It is now because they want people to vote for them that he is saying he will pay. I will not trust him anymore”.

Ms Rosy Phala said: “This pay back is now because of the elections. The whole leader-ship is so corrupt. The ANC thinks it will lose votes because of Nkandla. Even if Zuma pays back the money I will not trust him anymore”.

Your thoughts on Zuma’s efforts

Page 7: Platinum Gazette 05 February 2016

Mr David Malatji said: “The ANC is scared that they will lose the election because of Nkandla. It is right that he pays back some of the money. I’ll trust him again if he pays”. Mr Ishmael Motswiane said: “He is now

making an effort to pay as it is election time. He knew all along he had to pay but he did not do it earlier because he did not want to make it look like the EFF pressured him into doing it”.

Mr John Gairongwe said: “This is damage control. The ANC is worried about the bad publicity moving into the election. It is good for the party if he pays back the money. The people will now forgive and forget”.

Ms T Mushambi said: “I think he thinks that his political career is on the line. Maybe some people from within the ANC are pressuring him. I don’t think he was guilty of just taking money as he did not know about all the things, but is the right thing to pay. Maybe the ANC saw that people are tired and is scared that these people will move their votes”.

Left: Mr Leeroy Topera, Mr Godwin Mashanda and Mr Andile Hojisi said: “The President knows what he did was wrong. He now got what he wanted and maybe feels just a little guilty. It is easy to say you’ll pay something back once you’ve got what you wanted. The ANC also wans to get votes with this. It is the right thing for him to pay back the money that is owed to the people. Zuma wants to blindfold people to vote for him so that next he can fi ght to get the jet he wanted”.

Mr Carly Mthimkhulu said: “Zuma has now seen that the funds was not supposed to go to his house and that is why he wants to pay it back. It is not because of any type of pres-sure. It is because he is an honourable man”.

Mr Daniël Mokwena said: “He got a lot of pressure from other parties to pay back the money. The EFF and DA forced him to do it. I think it was like stealing from the public and I am happy he will now be paying back some money now. I actually think they should have sold Nkandla to recover the money. The ANC is scared they will lose the election if he does not pay”.

Ms Anastacia Malepe said: “A lot of people are going away from the party because of fraud and brotherhood. The ANC is not looking out for the good of the people, only for each other in the brotherhood. The pres-sure is now too much from others within the party so that is why Zuma has decided to do something now. He is protected in the party so the pressure is felt more on the party than the leader who is protected. It is a good thing he will pay back some money now. My tax is also in there!”

Mr ME Mokgotho said: “He will pay back the money because he is getting pressure to do so. As the leader of the ANC it is affecting the whole party and I think they are now pushing him to pay. His scandals will decrease the votes for the ANC”.

Mr Tumelo Sello said: “The President is un-der pressure towards the local elections. This is a way of buying votes. The money should be paid, but it should have been done a long time ago. This Nkandla thing has a negative impact on the party, they might lose a few votes over this”.

Regs: Mnr.

Left: Mr Thabiso Ranto said: “It is about the elections. Zuma is trying to convince the pub-lic that the ANC has realized their mistakes and is trying put it right. Why pay it now and not long ago?”

Small dysfunctional schools in Limpopo will soon be merged to the benefi t of the learners. These schools will also be monitored to assist in improving them. This was one of the issues that emerged from a meeting between the MEC for Education, Ishmael Kgetjepe, the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga and the top management of Limpopo Department of Education. This is a follow-up on the minister’s announcement that she will visit provinces to provide support in the endeavour to improve quality of education. Matters under discussion included the speedy merging of small schools which are dysfunctional. One hundred schools have been merged around the province and there are 201 identifi ed schools which will be merged soon. There are also plans to source out additional funds to make it possible for the department to deal extensively with infrastructure challenges. The department is currently dealing with the backlog of about 1000 storm damaged schools and also provide for new projects. There are 93 projects in different stages as part of the infrastructure delivery plans. The meeting acknowledged the good work of the department in provid-ing Learner Teacher Support Material (LTSM) for 2016 education year on time. There are 202 employees for special schools, 164 for public schools and 158 employees to be placed in Circuit Offi ces. These include teachers and support staff to be placed before the end of March 2016.There are 516 principal posts, 322 Deputy Principals and 974 schools’ Heads of Department posts planned to be fi lled in the 2016/7 fi nancial year. This initiative will enhance learning and teaching processes in different schools. Appointment of these employees will bring in relief to shortage of teachers and support staff challenges across the province.

They welcomed the new players and invite players who would like to join the team to contact

them. (Contact: Johan Gouws 084 868 3705; Dick Viljoen 082 936 1167 or Sam Mogane 078 216 7971). The Old Men (Ou Manne) played a friendly game against Hoedspruit as a curtain raiser. (Photographs & Information: Quartus du Toit and Willem Montgomery)

Modikwa Cycle Club racing at Barberton

The Modikwa Cycle Club entered and participated in the Barberton Cycle race on 30 January 2016. The team members who attended the event could choose to ride in one of the following categories: 20km, 30km, 48km, 77km and 105km. The local cy-clists opted for the 30km race that started at 07:45.

It was an extremely hot day, but the race was well planned and the beautiful scenery made it worth it for the riders. The Club members were also impressed

with the emergency units stationed along the route and the effi cient traffi c control. The team did not only have the wind at their backs as a few punctures had to be repaired along the way, but they are thankful as long as there were no injuries. Everyone was able to fi nish and the times clocked left the team satisfi ed with the day’s perfor-mance. Members who participated are: Andre Duminy, Derek Rieck, Hope Tyira, Johan Pretorius, Juanita Prins, Carine Duminy, Bev Rieck, Nicole Duminy and Hel-gaard Prins.
