Modikwa Platinu m Mine did a 25000t open cast sam ple blast last week Friday. Under

the watch full eye of Business Leader Sean OConnor and several other employees of

    the mine.

Initially the blast was plan ned for the previous a fternoon, but was postponed

because overcast weather caused darkn ess to set in much earlier than an ticipated.

For safety reasons th e blast took place first th ing the next morning.

The the early morning blast impressed all present who viewed the explosion from

th e highs of one of the mines waist d umps .

This was done to determine t he feasibility of future open cast mining a t th e mine.

The results of this will only be known after the sample ha s been processed.

To open the one hectare sized pit, 400 holes were drilled and blasted with 60 tons

of explosives. The th e pit will end up ha ving an 18m high wall. Approximately 30

people are presently working on the project.

Situated on the E astern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, Modikwa

Platinum Mine exploits th e chromitite seam known as the Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef.

The north/ n orthwesterly-tending ore body is approximately 28 km on strike,

outcropping on th e surface, and extends to an un known depth. The mine currently

extends over an ar ea of 14 278 ha, a nd holds the mineral lease over five farms:

Driekop, Maanda gshoek, Hendrikplaatz, Onverwacht and Winterveldt. The mine a rea

contains up to 48.4 million t onnes of mineral reserves, while measured a nd indicated

resources are estimat ed at between 115.2 and 145.7 million tonnes.

Both the UG2 and Merensky reef are found within t he mine ar ea. At present only

the UG2 is being mined, though some trial mining has been done on the Merensky

Reef Horizon. The U G2 reef is present as a chromitite layer of an average thickness of

nearly 60cm, which undu lates across the mine area at an am plitude of less than 2m.

Do you think SA will reap anySunday th e FIFA World Cup will draw to

an en d. This will be the conclusion of wha t

    government spent 33 thousand million

rand on over the past seven years. This

includes st adiums, improving of transport

infrastructure a nd investing in securitypersonnel and equipment.

Especially business owners in the h ost

cities feel the immediate benefits of the

    tournamen t. According to

    www.polity.org.za, Visa Inc has reported

that spending by foreigners using credit

cards has topped $128 million. This is 54%

up from their spending in South Africa for

    the same period last year.

Restaura nts, hotels and airlines have seen

a massive demand over the last month,

    but what about the future?

Direct infrastru cture benefits such as the

    Gautra in, upgraded roads, revamped

airports etc. but a less visible benefit is

the business confidence in South Africa as

an investment destination. This was one of

the key points of a recent briefing with

CEO of the local organ ising committee,Danny J ordaan an d various political

    figures.

Tony Twine, an economist was also quoted

    in various publications saying: The

market ing benefits, including tourism spin

offs, will no doubt be felt for many year s to

    come.

Most import an tly is th e global profiling of

South Africa. We were very misunderstood

as a destination, both for tourism and

even for foreign direct investment, said

Gillian Saun ders of Grant Thornton

Advisory Services. The stories that are

going out now are largely that the event is

going well, the fans are h aving a great

time. It s a welcoming and friendly

Mnr. Richard Foxcroft s: Als het goedafgeloop, so hulle sal dit seker weer kandoen met enige sportbyeenkomste.

Mr Justino Tivane said: There is nobenefit. We will still have to work hard toan improvement in South Africa. Withhim is Odenio Tivane.

Mr Sinkie Shumba said: The long termbenefit is the boost it will give the SouthAfrican economy through job creation.

Mr Caipus Mojela said: There is nobenefit. It was a waste.

Mr Lesley Motedi said: There is nobenefit. People were looking for jobs andnow there is nothing and they lose hope.

Left: Ms Mpho Nthutang said: I thinkthere may be benefits if the peoplemanaging the stadiums now will havetheir right powers.

Mr Papi Motene and Ms Ephenia Motene said: When government argued about thisissue it was made clear that the economy will grow through this, especially with peoplegetting employment and the benefits the tourism industry will reap. We were regardedas unsafe, but now people will continue to come to South Africa which in turn willcreate jobs. Sport does not end, it is forever.
