2.2 Positioning the SamplerThere are a few considerations when selecting asite for the sampler. The foremost concernshould be personal safety. The installation and use of this product maysubject you to dangerous working conditionsthat can cause you serious or fatal injuries.Take any necessary precautions before enteringthe work site. Install and operate this productin accordance with all applicable safety andhealth regulations, and local ordinances.

WARNINGIf this product is used in a manner not specifiedin this manual, the protection provided by theequipment may be impaired.

WARNINGThis product has not been approved for use inhazardous locations as defined by the NationalElectrical Code.

WARNINGThe sampler is heavy. When lifting, use atwo-person lift from the right and left sides. Whenpossible, move the sampler using a two-wheeledhand cart from the side. To prevent damage to therefrigeration system, do not tip the sampler morethan 45°.

Dangerous Locations – If you must enter amanhole, confined space, or other dangerouslocation to install the suction line and strainer, observe standard safety precautions.Support – The sampler should be installed ona surface capable of safely supporting thesampler, full liquid containers, and personnel.AC Power – The mains line cord is thedisconnect device should you need to removepower. Therefore, the electrical power outletshould be accessible.Environmental – The sampler is designed foroutdoor use. Refer to Table 1-2 forenvironmental specifications. When possible, avoid subjecting the sampler to chemicalattacks and direct sunlight.Avoid Submersion – The sampler is ratedNEMA 4x (IP66), which does not protect fromsubmersion. In the event of submersion, liquidentering the refrigeration system couldpermanently damage the sampler; liquidentering the bottle compartment couldcontaminate the collected samples. Liquidentering the electrical compartment for therefrigeration system could result in a shortcircuit and possible shock hazard.Liquid Sample Collection Point – It is bestto keep the distance between the sampler pumpand the collection point as short as possible. Also, the pump inlet should be located abovethe liquid surface to be sampled with no liquidtraps. Gravity will aid suction line rinses andallow the line to drain, thereby reducing the

Page 22: Platinum/Optima CVE Pocket Guide · Platinum/Optima CVE Refrigerated Sampler 2-14 Teledyne ISCO ships suction line in standard lengths of 3.0 m (10 ft) or 7.6 m (25 ft). Either length

possibility of sample cross-contamination. Referto Table 1-2 for maximum suction line lengthsand suction head heights.Security – The sample compartment andcontrol panel have a padlock feature, but thelocation may need additional security toprevent tampering or vandalism.Accessibility – The sampler must be installedin a location where personnel can easilyexchange bottles and perform routine service. The sampler requires about 2600 squarecentimeters (925 in2) of floor space. Additionalspace must be allowed in front of the sampler,at its left and right sides, and above thesampler. Do not block access to these areas.Obstructions will make routine servicingactivities difficult or impossible. The back of the sampler may be placed againsta wall. Allow free air flow on both right and leftsides of the sampler, particularly at the vents.Unrestricted air flow behind and around thesampler will allow the refrigeration system towork efficiently.Level Surface – The sampler should be placedon a level surface and the feet on therefrigerator body should be adjusted to preventtipping or spills. If the sampler is not level, thesample liquid may miss the bottle mouth. To level the sampler, place a bubble level on thetop of the refrigerated compartment.

2-5

CAUTIONDo not tip the sampler on its side or back. Tippingthe sampler more than 45° might cause oil to runinto the compressor inlet, which can permanentlydamage the refrigeration system.

2.3 Connecting Power

WARNINGBefore connecting the sampler to an AC powersource, be familiar with the ElectricalRequirements listed at the front of the Installationand Operation manual.

The factory assembles the sampler for either115 VAC/60 Hz, or 230 VAC/50 Hz. The serialnumber label located inside the control coveridentifies the AC power configuration of yoursampler. You cannot convert the sampler in thefield.

• The mains power cord for 115 VACsamplers is equipped with a NEMA 5-15Pplug for standard North Americanoutlets.

• The mains power cord for 230 VACsamplers is equipped with an EU 1-16Pplug for standard CEE 7-7 Europeanoutlets.

• For other types of outlets that supplycompatible AC power, convert the mains

power cord plug with a locally-purchasedadapter.

Plug the mains power cord into the outlet. Thesampler control panel will briefly show thisstart up display.

NoteThe refrigeration system must sit for 24 hours beforepowering up. This allows the compressor oil to drainback into the compressor if the unit was tipped on itsside any time during shipment or during installation.

2.5 Attaching the Suction Line

NoteThe suction line is the tubing from the sampling point tothe sampler intake fitting. The sampler typically uses a3/8 inch ID (9 mm) suction line of lengths from 3 to 150feet. Teledyne ISCO offers vinyl or PTFE-lined suctionlines. The PTFE-lined tubing has a polyethylene jacketto protect it from kinks and abrasions. The vinyl suctionline contains a very low parts-per-million level ofphenols. If phenol content affects your sample analysis, use the PTFE-lined suction line.

Page 32: Platinum/Optima CVE Pocket Guide · Platinum/Optima CVE Refrigerated Sampler 2-14 Teledyne ISCO ships suction line in standard lengths of 3.0 m (10 ft) or 7.6 m (25 ft). Either length

Platinum/Optima CVE Refrigerated Sampler

2-14

Teledyne ISCO ships suction line in standardlengths of 3.0 m (10 ft) or 7.6 m (25 ft). Eitherlength should be cut to the shortest lengthfeasible for the installation. When installed, theline should run the shortest possible distancefrom the collection point to the sampler, preferably with a gradual upward slope. Excesssuction line should be cut, not coiled. Coiledsuction line will hold liquid between sampleevents which could cross-contaminate samplesor freeze in cold climates. If the standardlengths are too short, or if you are cuttingcompatible 3/8 inch ID suction line from a bulkspool, you can use lengths up to 45 m (150 ft).

2.5.1 Vinyl Suction LineThe sampler inlet fitting is on the left side ofthe samplers. 1/2” and 3/8” stainless steel barbedfittings are available to choose from. Thesample line is 3/8” x 5/8” (I.D. x O.D.) or 1/2” and3/4” clear PVC tubing which is connected to thea right-angle barbed fitting.

2.5.2 PTFE-lined Suction LineInserting a tube coupler into PTFE-linedsuction line will damage the thin lining.Instead, refer to Figure 2-7 and the instructionsbelow to attach PTFE-lined suction line to thesample tube:

1. Slide a short piece of silicone tubing overthe inlet fitting and install a hose clamp (B).

2. Push about 20 mm of the PTFE-linedsuction line into the end of the silicone tube(A).

3. Slide the clamp over the union and tighten.Do not overtighten; this might cause thetubing to collapse or restrict the flow.

2.6 Attaching a StrainerTo select the right strainer for your application, refer to Figure 2-8 and the table that follows.

into the line. Warming PTFE-lined tubing willmake it more pliable to avoid damage.

2.6.1 Alternative to StrainersWhen sampling from high velocity streamswith heavy suspended solids, some fieldinvestigations suggest that morerepresentative samples are obtained withoutthe strainer. Consider attaching a short piece ofthin walled aluminum tubing to the end of thesuction line; anchor the tubing so that the inletopens upstream. The aluminum tubing’s thinwall will not disturb the flow stream, and mostsample analyses disregard aluminum ions.Under most conditions, a pre-sample line rinseremoves any debris over the tubing entrance.

2.6.2 Max Unanchored LengthDuring a pre or post-sample purge or line rinse, the suction line is filled with air which mightcause the suction line and strainer to float. Ifthe length of the suction line and strainerexceeds the listed value, securely anchor thestrainer.Even if the maximum length is not exceeded, itis a good idea to anchor the suction line andstrainer when sampling from high velocity orturbulent flow streams.

2.7 Routing Suction Line andStrainer

Route the suction line so that it has acontinuous slope from the liquid source to thesampler. This helps to drain the line during preand post-sample line purges and rinses. If asuction line exposed to freezing climates doesnot fully drain, there is a risk of liquid in thesuction line becoming frozen. Frozen liquid willcause the sample collection to fail. A warmsampling source can usually prevent this, provided there are no traps or low spots in thesuction line. Some extreme situations mayrequire more protective measures, such asinsulating the suction line or applying heattape or adding a pump heater. For representative samples, place the strainerin the main current of the flow stream, not inan eddy or at the edge of flow. Placing a strainerat the bottom may produce samples with excessheavy solids and no floating materials, whileplacing it at the top may produce the oppositeconditions.

2.8 External DevicesYou can connect the sampler to an externalinstrument (Figure 2-9) for a variety of reasons.Typical reasons include:

• Receiving flow pulses from a flow meterdevice for variable time.

Figure 2-9 External device connections arelocated on the upper right side of the sampler

• Receiving an enable pin signal to enablesampler operation once site conditionswarrant sample collection.

• Receiving a linear 4-20 mA analog orpulse representation of the flow rate forvariable time.

• Sending alarm signals when samplingevents occur.

These types of connections can be categorizedas Standard ISCO device connections or otherdevice connections. Each type is discussed inSections 2.8.1.

2.8.1 Other Device ConnectionsYou can connect the sampler to receive a4-20 mA signal, 0-5 VDC, 0-10 VDC or pulsesfrom an external device.

CAUTIONRisk of equipment damage. Only experiencedelectronic technicians should make the connectionsto an external device.

To connect the external device, refer to Table2-2 and select the appropriate pins. Connect thewires by inserting the wires into the proper pinnumber and tightening them. To complete theconnection, be sure to finish the connectorassembly.

3.4 Sampling Program OverviewThe sampling program controls how oftensample events occur and what should takeplace at each event. A sample event mayhappen when:

• Starting a flow paced program that isprogrammed to sample after a delay(Section 3.5.13).

• A time paced program reaches the firstsample time and date.

• The programmed time interval haselapsed.

• The programmed number of flow pulseshas been reached.

At each event, the sampler:1. Resets the programmed flow or time pacing

interval after initializing a sample.

2. Purges the suction line (see Section 3.3.3).

3. Sends a closed contact while sample istaken. The sampler deposits theprogrammed sample volume into the bottle.

If programmed to deposit a sample volumein more than one bottle, the sampler:

a. Moves the table to the next bottle.

b. Deposits the programmed samplevolume into the bottle.

c. Repeats steps 3a and 3b until theprogrammed number of bottles per eventis reached.

4. Purges the suction line (see Section 3.3.3).There are five categories of sampling programinstructions that control the above actions in anevent. These categories include:

• Cycle: Parameters that configure thesampling cycle, purge, sample time, postpurge, rinse, recycle, and consecutivesamples.

• Sample Interval: Define what controlsthe sample collection interval based onTime or Flow.

• Bottle Option: Define which samplingtype (discrete/composite) and the bottleconfiguration.

• PGM Run Options: Configure programrun options including auto rerun, delaystart, float, fault, timed stop, and bottlelimit.

3.4.6 Program Events

Each program’s scheduled events are defined bya list that can be accessed via the PROGRAM

EVENTS group. Each event on that list has threeassociated values:

• The type of event (start, stop, pause, halt, resume or manually sample).

• The days of the week on which the eventwill be executed.

• The time of day on those days at whichthe event will be initiated.

Select the “End List” event when you haveprogrammed all the desired program events. You can remove events by disabling the eventfor each day of the week.

3.5 Programming StepsTo begin programming from the PGM READY

screen, use the menu F3 (SEL) button to selectPROGRAM. Press the F3 button to display thefirst programming screen PROGRAM #1.

3.5.1 Sample PacingThere are two pacing methods for samplingprograms, Time Paced and Flow Paced.

• Time Paced sampling programs use thesampler’s internal clock to collectsamples at a constant time or variabletime interval. When you program thesampler for time pacing, the sampler willprompt you to enter the time betweensample events in minutes.

• Flow Paced sampling programs requirean electronic signal from a flowmeasurement device. This electronicsignal is typically a dry contact (pulse)that indicates some user-programmedvolume interval has passed through theflow channel. Because each pulserepresents a volume interval, flow pacingrates are proportional to the volume of

Page 75: Platinum/Optima CVE Pocket Guide · Platinum/Optima CVE Refrigerated Sampler 2-14 Teledyne ISCO ships suction line in standard lengths of 3.0 m (10 ft) or 7.6 m (25 ft). Either length

Section 3 Programming

3-29

water flowing through the channel. Thisis sometimes called “Constant VolumeVariable Time (CVVT) sampling.” Whenyou program the sampler for flow pacing, the sampler will prompt you to enter thenumber of pulses to count beforecollecting a sample.

All Teledyne ISCO flow meters provide acompatible flow pulse. Non-ISCO flowmeasurement devices may be used to paced thesampler. Refer to Section 2.8– External Devicesfor more details.Use the F3(SEL) button to select the time orflow option, then press the ENTER button.

3.5.2 Time PacedTime Paced Only – Use the number buttons toenter the time interval in minutes. The samplercollects a sample each time this interval elapseswhile the program is running.

3.5.3 Flow PacedFlow Paced Only – Use the number buttons toenter the flow interval as a number of pulses. While the program is running the samplercounts the flow pulses until this number isreached. At this time the sampler collects asample and resets the interval to begincounting again. The volume that each flow pulse represents is afixed volume. Refer to the instruction manual ofthe flow measurement device.

3-30

For example, consider an ISCO 4250 FlowMeter programmed to send a flow pulse every100 gallons. If you are required to collect asample every 10,000 gallons, you would enter100 flow pulses. 10,000 gallons 100 gallons =100 pulses. If the flow measurement device sends flow ratedata via a 4-20 mA current loop instead of flowpulses. The sample program needs to bechanged in the SMPL. INTERVAL menu. Thesampler assumes that the current is linearfrom 4 mA at zero flow to 20 mA at thefull-scale flow rate.

1. Select the flow input type to 4-20mA.

2. Enter the maximum flow rate (MAX. LPM).

3. Enter the liters between each sample(SMPL LITERS).

Example: Consider a flow meter output to 20mA at 1,000 liters per minute, the peak flowrate of the channel. If you are required to collecta sample every 5,000 liters, you would enter5,000 in the SMPL. LITERS menu. The samplerwould totalize the flow base on the MAX LPMand the flow signal. The sampler will totalizethe liters based on the flow signal. There are noflow calculations needed, the sampler does thatfor you.

3.5.4 Bottles per SampleEventMultiple Bottles Only – The sampler places asample volume in one bottle or sets of bottles ateach sample event. Use this screen to enter the

3.5.8 RunContinuouslySample programs can run indefinitely or stopby going to PGM RUN OPTS and then to BOTTLE

LIMIT. Select PGM. CONTINUE to run theprogram continuously or PGM STOP to stop theprogram when complete. Continuous samplingresets the distribution when the distributionsequence is complete. That is, when the lastbottle/set is reached, the next bottle/set is thefirst bottle/set.In this mode, the sampler assumes that anyfilled bottles are replaced and ready to receivesamples while the program is running, thus thepacing interval is never interrupted. If you select PGM STOP, the sampler will rununtil it completes the distribution sequence, atwhich time it stops the program and reportsPROGRAM DONE. The sampler will wait in thisstate until the bottles have been emptied andthe program is restarted. If your sampler is configured for compositesampling, refer to Section 3.5.14 forinstructions on continuous sampling.

3.5.9 Sample SecondEnter the number of seconds it will take to fillthe sample chamber and touch theliquid-sensor electrodes. The sample secondsmust exceed the number of seconds to fill thechamber. When the liquid-sensor is activated, the timer stops and the program goes to postpurge.

3.5.10 Flow Pulses, Analog InputTime Paced Only – If you are collectingsample volumes dependent on flow (Section3.5.11), select which type of flow rate input isprovided by the external flow measurementdevice (see Section 2.8).

3.5.11 CompositeSamplesSingle Bottle Only – Use the number buttonsto type the number of composite samples totake. Press the ENTER button to accept thevalue. The sampler does not calculate the maximumnumber of samples. Use caution when selectingthe maximum number of samples per bottle sothey do not overfill.

• If you selected continuous in the BOTTLE

3.5.14 Auto Re-RunBy default, the sampling program must bemanually reset each time it stops, whichindicates to the controller that the samplecontainers have been emptied. If you configurea START EVENT to repeatedly start and stop thesampler, enabling the AUTOMATIC RERUN

parameter would enable the program to restartwithout being reset.

NoteYou should not enable this parameter unless you arescheduling automatic start events.

3.5.15 Timed Stop/Max Run TimeThis parameter configures the program toautomatically stop a specified number of hoursor minutes after it initiates its interval timers. The choices are None, 24 HR,12 HR,8HR andCustom. 4.4 Grab SamplesGrab samples let you take a single sample ondemand and collecting it in an externalcontainer. You can collect a grab sample whilethe sampler is in RUN mode. A grab sample(volume test sample) can be taken at any timewhile the program is running.

NoteWhen grab samples are taken while a program isrunning, the samples are not logged or counted as partof the number of samples in the program.

To collect a Grab Sample:1.When the program is running, push PAUSE

(F3). Then push GRAB (F2) to enter grabsampling mode.

3.When grab sampling is complete, push theF1 STOP and then F3 CONTINUE. Theprogram will take you back to the pausescreen and push F3 RESUME. The programwill return to the RUN screen.

4.5 Velocity Control ValveThe velocity control valveadjustment is to control theinlet velocity of the sample. Thevalve is located inside therefrigerator on the upper rightside of the sample chamber andcan be adjusted by rotating theknob.

• If the lift height is between 1and 3 meters, close the valveall the way (rotateclockwise), then open two completerotations (rotate counterclockwise). Thesampler is always shipped at this setting.

• Open the valve all the way if the liftheight is 1 meter or less.

• Close the valve all the way if the liftheight is greater than 3 meters.

5.2 FuseThe control system operates on 12 VAC powersupplied by a transformer located in thevacuum pump compartment. Those componentsare protected by a fast-acting, 10A/250 Vcartridge fuse. The enclosed fuse holder ismounted next to the transformer.

• That fuse can be checked and/or replacedby pulling the front cover of the holderforward which automatically ejects theright end of the fuse.

• The control system can be powered downby tipping the top of the holder up and tothe left.

5.3 Cleaning the SampleChamber

To clean the sample chamber:1. Stop or Pause the program.

2. Remove the chamber from the sampler.

3. Remove the 10 screws that hold the lid andchamber body together.Place the chamber parts into warm soapywater and clean the chamber andliquid-sensor electrodes using a brush orsponge.

4.Assemble the chamber using the screws. Besure that the seal is properly seated and thescrews are tight. Loose screws or improperlyplaced seal can cause a vacuum leak.

5. Install the sample chamber back into theunit.

5.3.1 Sample Chamber RemovalTo remove the sample chamber:

1. Unscrew the white hose fittings on top ofthe sample chamber and loosen thecompression nut. Slide the stainless steelintake tube in.

2. Use the lever to loosen the set collar.

3. Lift the sample chamber out of the collar.

4. Remove the stainless steel intake tube fromthe chamber and the two wires from theliquid-sensor electrodes.

5.4 Compressor/Vacuum PumpEach sampling system is equipped with onecontinuous-duty, permanently lubricated, piston or diaphragm compressor/vacuumpumps that provide long-term consistentsampling with vertical lifts of up to 28 feet (US23 ft. lift standard). These pumps need noroutine maintenance. The pump and its 4-way solenoid valve aremounted on a metal plate behind the sampler’supper rear access panel. If your pump’sperformance declines unacceptably, replacement pumps and service/rebuild kits(including instructions) can be obtained fromTeledyne ISCO.

5.5 Clean or Replace WettedPartsFor general cleaning, you can wash the strainerand sample bottles with a brush and warmsoapy water and then rinse with clean water. You can clean the liquid path through thewetted parts by placing the strainer in acleaning solution and pumping it through thedelivery system. Next, place the strainer inclean water and pump it through the deliverysystem to rinse it. If these items are severelycontaminated, replace them.

5.5.1 Sampler Cleaning GuidelinesKeeping the sampler clean and protected fromharsh elements may extend the usable life ofthe sampler. When necessary, clean the exteriorand interior of the sampler and samplechamber with warm soapy water and brush, then rinse with water. Be sure to use adetergent that is compatible with low-densitypolyethylene, polystyrene, PVC, ABS,polycarbonate and NORYL™1. Avoid usingstrong solvents and acids.
