Dear Parents, Thank you to the staff and families who chose 8am on Sunday for their weekend celebration of Mass. It was lovely to gather together in community and to share morning tea afterward. We hope to have more regular Parish / School weekend Masses. During Mass we listened to the Gospel of Matthew 22:1-14 regarding who was invited and who accepted the invitation to a wedding banquet. The theme of invitation can be paralleled to our acceptance or rejection of God’s invitation to us to join his banquet. We ask for the grace to accept this invitation in our daily lives. Brain Theory: In the holidays I took time to attend a leadership conference in Melbourne and we were spoiled with international key-note speakers. One speaker was Dr John Medina a molecular biologist from America. He presented on New Thoughts in Neuroscience a fascinating topic. Part of the research he presented was about the finding that aerobic activity increases executive function. (Executive function is a set of mental processes that allows us to: Make plans

Keep track of time and finish work on time

Keep track of more than one thing at once

Meaningfully include past knowledge in discussions

Evaluate ideas and reflect on our work

Change our minds and make mid-course corrections while thinking, reading and writing

Ask for help or seek more information when we need it

Engage in group dynamics

Wait to speak until we’re called on.)

Let’s get our kids active to help them learn! The Jubilee Carnival is fast approaching and we are finalising plans. A meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 15th October at 5pm in the library for the committee and the class parent reps and all other available and interested people. The bring-along weeks have been very well supported – thank you. If you have gathered items at home for any of the stalls please send in to school at your earliest convenience.

So far we have asked for donations of:

ITEMS FOR THE RAFFLE

NOVELTY items for prizes

NON PERISHABLE GROCERIES

PRE LOVED QUALITY TOYS

BOOKS

CD’S

DVD’S

QUALITY PRELOVED CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES

BAKING FOR THE CAKE STALL

Soon we will be calling for:

CHOCOLATE BARS

TEDDY BEARS (DRESSED & NAMED BY THE CHILDREN)

Have a lovely week Kind Regards, Jo

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

It is great to see students are still getting out in the mornings and at lunch to practice their skipping. It is my

pleasure to inform you that the school community raised an amazing $3,317 in total for the Heart

Foundation. Thank you to all of the people who sponsored a student for this event, your support is greatly

appreciated. Prizes are on their way and will be sent home soon. It was so awesome to hear one student say

“it isn’t about the prizes it’s just a kind thing to do” (Anthony Ward 3L) which is exactly what the Our Lady of

the Way community is about.

Thank you again for all of your effort and I look forward to JRFH 2015.

Italian News

Ciao a tutti (Hi everyone)

Last Saturday, I attended an Italian Immersion Day/Seminar at Caloundra organised by the Italian Language

Centre in Brisbane. Dr Ignazia Nespolo, a popular visiting teacher/professor from Italy, presented sessions

on: Journeying through Italy’s past, making cultural and linguistic connections; linguistic games to play in the

classroom; engaging in narratives to develop comprehension through reading.

Con la storia si impara – with the history you learn; and Giocando si impara – you learn by playing games.

One game that the children are familiar with playing in class is 13, where they take turns at saying up to 3

numbers in succession until they reach 13 and that person sits out. Per imparare I numeri: similar rules apply

when playing the game in Italian but we can count further than 13 and then in 10s and then 100s: Ora

contiamo per 10 e contiamo per 100.

In last week’s lessons the children viewed 4 short clips about the life of St Francis. Three animated clips

featured how St Francis preached, helped and cared for people, as well as giving alms to the poor. The fourth

clip featured a song based on St Francis’ poem/hymn about the sun and moon; Brother sun – Fratello sole

and Sister moon – Sorella luna.

Saluti da Grace, Greetings from Grace.
