Three day-long drives offering picturesque adventures—no reservations required

While summer will soon bid us adieu, there’s no reason to let your sense of adven-ture disappear. Escape city life for a bit of late-summer exploration by steering your way through breathtaking scenery and charming small-towns on easy day trips.

If you want a journey that combines roll-ing hills with beloved tourist stops, head northwest toward the 40-mile “Baraboo Bluff” loop. Consider Circus World Museum a perfect start to adventurous destinations. Take a tour or enjoy a lively circus performance before heading through town to Devil’s Lake State Park to hike, swim, or soak in the sun. Exit the park on Tower Road where natural hotspots such as Durward’s Glen await, then round back to the park on County Road DL for aah-inducing views before heading home.

For outdoor enjoyment complete with watery pit stops, head east to Lake Ge-neva, where Sheridan Springs Road pres-ents a eight-mile stretch of picturesque countryside leading to Lyons, a quiet town where cafés offer good eats and the nearby White River offers a chance to hop into a

kayak or canoe. When back in the car, venture west on Cranberry Road

(off U.S. Highway 50) to pass cranberry bogs before landing back in Lake Geneva—home to resorts, beaches and summer-style fun ideal for closing out

the season.When you’re up for a longer

drive that promises a little history and a whole lot of wilderness, travel

60 miles east to the southern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Park. Jump on a loop from State Park Road and head east to Route 67 to check out Old World Wis-consin, the largest outdoor museum in the country before venturing 35 miles north on Route 83 to the Holy Hill church site. Loop back to the Kettle Moraine State Forest on U.S. Highway 167, where trails, natural wonders and rustic roads offer the chance to hike, bike, picnic, or simply cruise with the windows down.
