As technology changes, Mount Baker Theatre con-stantly evaluates what we’re doing and what we need to do to stay on top and provide the very best possible experience for our customers. With this in mind, the Mount Baker Theatre board re-cently approved making a substantial investment in our website. It’s been several years since we overhauled the site, and during that time we’ve realized that there are plenty of things we can do differently and better.

One of the latest trends in web design is for web pages to be “responsive.” This means that no matter which form of technology you use—computer, tablet, or smart phone—you’ll get access to the entire site with the easiest navigation and best optimization pos-sible. This means less zooming, squinting, and resizing, but with the full information usually missing from “mobile optimized” webpages. This also means improved acces-sibility and navigation of our calendar of events, access to even more sneak-peak show videos, and an overall improved and simplified purchasing process.

We’re working with an outstanding web design firm called Domain7. Their strategy: “foster a highly collaborative research-based approach to architecting on-line experi-ences.” Based on findings from a thorough research and vision stage, their designers will create a product with the user-experience top of mind—they call it “humanizing the web.” With that in mind, we are very interested in hearing from you about what you would like in our new site. Our expectation is that we’ll be making progress and improvements on the new site until its completion early next year. To provide input just send an email to [email protected] and put “Web Site” in the subject line, or simply contact Marketing Manager Beth Melvin at (360) 733-5793 x 307, and we’ll listen to your suggestions and consider them as we go through the process.

Once we complete this upgrade we’ll be one of the first performing arts centers on the west coast to have a responsive website and such a significant improvement will be much more convenient for our customers! Let us know what you want. But in the meantime… please enjoy the show!

Brad Burdick, Executive Director

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

STEVE LANDES (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Har-monica, Piano, Original Broadway Cast) a life-long, second generation Beatles fan, Steve taught himself guitar at ten by listening to Beatles records and by 13 was fronting a top 40 cover band in his native Phil-adelphia. At 17 he joined Beatlemania and further developed his musicianship, touring the world with the show. After “passing the audition” with the exist-ing Rain band members in 1998, his career was set. On one of his travels to England, he found himself at Liverpool’s Casbah Club, owned by pre-Ringo Beat-les drummer Pete Best. Encouraged to get on stage, Steve belted out lead vocals to the Beatles rocker “Slow Down,” while Best sat in on drums. As a back-up musician, Steve has performed alongside legend-ary sixties artists Peter Noone (Herman’s Hermits), Joey Molland (Badfinger), Mitch Ryder and the De-troit Wheels and Tiny Tim. As an actor, he appeared in the films Wedding Bell Blues, For Which He Stands and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! Steve writes and records his own original music. www.steve-lan-des.com, facebook.com/steve.landes.rain.

JOEY CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in a Brooklyn household where classical music and opera formed the soundtrack. A natural musician, he was infatuat-ed with The Beatles, taught himself guitar at age 10 and played piano by ear at 16. After winning mul-tiple McCartney sound-alike contests, Joey toured with the Broadway production of Beatlemania. He joined Rain shortly after, and helped transform the band into the multimedia production it is today. In addition, he is an active singer/songwriter and stu-dio musician. His original Christmas song “Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas” is featured on Broad-way’s Carols for a Cure, Volume 12 (to benefit BC/EFA) as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foun-dation’s Hope for the Holidays charity album. When Universal Pictures needed a McCartney sound, they contacted Joey to record the song “Love Take Me Down” for the recently released comedy Role Mod-els. For Joey, performing on Broadway was a dream come true.

JOE BITHORN (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth, Sitar, Original Broadway Cast) grew up in Man-hattan and Long Island, where he was exposed to a variety of music including jazz, Latin, classical and more. By age three, his musical father taught his children how to sing harmony. He was profound-ly influenced by the experiences he had at Carnegie

Hall through his Mom, who worked with the Fes-tival Casals. Thanks to The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan, Joe took a strong interest in the guitar. Early influences include the band Cream, and Joe developed the ability to learn guitar parts by ear by age 14. By age 16, he was so proficient that he was re-cruited for studio sessions. While in high school, Joe and his brother formed the Bithorn Brothers Band, performing the early music of the Allman Brothers Band. Joe heard about an audition for Beatlemania and was hired for the touring production as George. After touring with the show in North America, Joe joined Rain in 1983 and has been touring the world ever since.

RALPH CASTELLI (Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Original Broadway Cast) was born and raised in southern California, surrounded by a musically tal-ented family, and by age six became passionate about playing drums. On that momentous night in Febru-ary, 1964, when The Beatles first appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” Ralph was hypnotized and knew playing drums was what he was born to do. Captivat-ed by Ringo Starr and The Beatles that night, Ralph’s excitement continued to grow, and his dream would eventually become his reality. After touring and per-forming with numerous bands and pursuing his act-ing career, Ralph landed the role of Ringo Starr in the touring production of Beatlemania and was also cast as Ringo in Beatlemania: The Movie. His tal-ent, drum techniques, humor, style and appearance were in his favor. Ralph joined Rain in 1986 and was thrilled to be on Broadway.

MARK BEYER (Keyboard, Percussion) began piano lessons at age 8; at 12 was given special acceptance into a local University musical school where he was privately trained in piano and music theory. At 14, he began experimenting with electronic keyboards and synthesizers of the 1970s, and played profes-sionally in a progressive rock band. As keyboard technology advanced, Mark became known for his uncanny reproductions of elaborate sound textures, exotic instruments, and simulating full orchestra.

Performers may change. Additional musicians may include:

MARK LEWIS (Founder, Manager, Original Key-boardist). As the managerial and creative mind that transformed Rain from a 1970’s southern California bar band doing Beatles covers into an ultra-profes-sional group, Mark Lewis recruited the excellent

Page 12: Playbill for Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

musicians who would gel into Rain’s long-standing line-up. He traces his love of the Fab Four to the Sunday night of February 9, 1964, when his gener-ation was smitten by The Beatles on “The Ed Sulli-van Show.” Originally called Reign, the band gained national fame, changed its name to Rain and cut the soundtrack to the made-for-TV movie Birth of The Beatles (thanks to Dick Clark). An accomplished pi-anist at 13, having studied since age five, he began his career playing the Farfisa organ in teenage rock bands around his native Los Angeles. It was Mark, the original keyboard player with Rain, who worked out all of the musical parts and sounds that enabled Rain to bring to life many songs that The Beatles themselves never performed live.

DOUGLAS COX (Drums, Percussion, Vocals) was born in Kansas City and raised in Texas. Through his parents’ records he discovered Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Buddy Holly, but was profound-ly moved by one song, The Beatles “Ticket to Ride.” Doug drummed for 16 years in Dallas’ top Beatles tribute, A Hard Night’s Day. He has many memo-ries pounding those “pagan skins” in Las Vegas, Liverpool, in London recording videos with VH-1 in Abbey Road Studio 2 and backing Tony Sheridan in Hamburg’s Kaiserkeller. Musicians back home say Doug has always naturally had that signature Ringo style, even as a 12-year-old learning the trap set.

JIM IRIZARRY (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Harmonica) is from Chicago, IL, and began singing and playing the music of his favorite band, The Beat-les, at the age of 12. He performed in local Chicago Beatle bands and learned the harmonica to master some of his early Beatle favorites. Years later Jim visited Liverpool for Beatle Week and made several appearances at the Cavern Club. He naturally cap-tures the look and sound of Lennon and transforms himself through all eras of The Beatles, as well as recreating John’s famous humor and onstage antics.

CHRIS SMALLWOOD (Keyboard, Percussion) Chris fell in love with music as a young kid, but didn’t fall onto a piano bench until high school, when he broke his leg. Just two years later, he was invited to Kentucky’s prestigious Governor’s School for the Arts Program. In 2008, Chris received a bachelor of music from Belmont University, and in 2010 earned his master of music from the University of Louis-ville. Chris is the owner of Mockingbird Musicians (mockingbirdmusicians.com), a Nashville music contracting service, and appears regularly in Nash-

ville with local artists as a freelance pianist, guitarist and singer. He also currently serves as adjunct in-structor at the Belmont University School of Music.

TOM TEELEY (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Synth, Sitar). A native New Yorker, Tom made his stage debut as George Harrison in the original Broadway production of Beatlemania, and also appeared in Dick Clark’s Rock “N” Roll! The First 5000 Years, portraying John Lennon, Paul Simon, Jimi Hen-drix, Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis and more. His film credits include the role of George in Beatle-mania the Movie and Peggy Sue Got Married. He has performed with Joe Jackson, Sophie B Hawkins and Marshall Crenshaw, and collaborated with Alice Cooper, Tommy James, The Monkees, and Desmond Child. Tom released a solo album, Tales of Glamour and Distress (A&M Records), and can be heard as lead vocalist on the recent TV theme for “The Teen-age Mutant Ninja Turtles” series. www.tomteeley.com

IAN B. GARCIA (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) was born in the exotic coastal town of Viña del Mar, Chile. He currently resides in Toronto, Canada. Self-taught in voice, guitar, piano and bass he has evolved over the years into a versatile and mature multi – instrumentalist. In 2002 while performing locally he caught the attention of a Beatles tribute act that was in need of a Paul McCartney. The next 5 years would see Garcia honing in and becoming a professional entertainer as he would gradually grow into his mentor’s character. “I have learned so much about playing Sir Paul, that my musical abilities have gone to places I could never have imagined” says Garcia . “It’s those moments like getting the phone call to perform in and be a part of RAIN: A Tribute To The Beatles that I respect my line of work and the gift that I have been given. “I am constantly evolving as a person and as a performer. To eventually tackle the complex musical genius of McCartney in RAIN came as an inevitable challenge.” Garcia proudly states.

PAUL CURATOLO (Vocals, Bass, Piano, Guitar) The Beatles became Paul’s biggest influence as a child growing up with RAIN. At ten years old, his musical journey began when he taught himself the drums. He quickly adapted to guitar & piano which drove him to write and record his own music. When he was 14, as a member of the pop band “Wayward”, he went on to record five albums. Until recently the band has toured the U.S. and was voted home town

heroes in A.P. magazine.(Alternative Press).Paul’s love for the Beatles has driven him to master the character of Paul McCartney down to every detail. From vocal inflections to turning the bass over to perform left-handed. Paul considers it an honor to pay tribute to his idol.

AARON CHIAZZA (Drums, Percussion, Vocals) began playing music at the young age of 5 when his parents gifted him a drumset. This drumset did not last long under the strength of a kindergartner and eventually he moved into a full size instrument by early elementary school. Early yet important musi-cal influences stemmed from a blend of past era funk, soul, jazz, rock, and others. From there he went on to study music in an academic setting through high-school and college participating in Jazz, Symphon-ic, and percussion ensembles. Amongst tossing up time between original projects, writing and shows, Aaron also loves being an audio engineer and artist. You can follow his work and ventures with RAIN on his website - www.AaronChiazza.com

Living is an Art

Page 22: Playbill for Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

22 | MBT Spotlight Magazine

There are many terms you could use to describe Victorian Britain. “Free-spirited” would not be one of them. Try “rigid,” “re-served,” and, above all else, “proper.” Proper ladies and gentlemen were expected to abide by a complex, unyielding set of social expectations that dominated every aspect of life. Today, Victorian modesty may seem laughably excessive (The groom kissed the bride? Scandalous!), but in the 1800s, letting loose a little and indulging yourself, no mat-ter how strong the urge, simply wasn’t done. (Keep a stiff upper lip, old boy!)

With such a strong climate of repres-sion, it’s no surprise a book about gleefully discarding one’s own inhibitions became an instant hit. The surprise was who wrote it. At the time, Robert Louis Stevenson was a celebrated author of children’s adventure stories. He wrote swashbuckling classics like Treasure Island and Kidnapped, tales that were suspenseful and fun. When he

published [The] Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, his fans were somewhat jolted. Imagine, if you will, J.K. Rowling pausing mid-Harry Potter series to write Psycho.

Stevenson had been toying with ideas for a story about the nature of good and evil for some time. In 1885, bedridden and ill, he woke from a nightmare with a few chilling scenes in his mind. According to his family, he feverishly wrote the initial story in less than two weeks while confined to bed. Leg-

Page 23: Playbill for Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

end has it that, unsatisfied with his first draft, he burned the manuscript to force himself to start over from scratch.

Many, if not most, people are already familiar with the premise of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Henry Jekyll, a proper gentleman, invents a potion that physically and psycho-logically transforms him into Edward Hyde, a sociopathic murderer and altogether improper fellow. While Jekyll maintains a level head and a moral compass, Hyde is hot-tempered and cruel – simply put, Jekyll is a good man, and Hyde is an evil one. Things begin to spin out of control when the transformations start happening on their own.

The story continues to fascinate us, more than 120 years since it first appeared. Various adaptations have added elements of comedy, science fiction, horror, and the supernatural, and many have explored the idea of She-Jekyll/She-Hyde, as well as gender-swapping combinations. There have been more than 100 film adaptations, not to mention those for television (you can thank Stevenson for the

ol’ “split personality” plot twist in countless detective stories), radio, and stage.

It’s the stage, not the screen, where Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde truly shines. Live theatre is exciting in its own right, but experiencing a single actor embodying two polarized person-alities – characters that move, speak, and sing differently, and sometimes even interact – in real-time is positively thrilling. No camera tricks, no edits, no computer wizardry. There’s definitely no time to “feel out” the charac-ter before diving in – the leading man has to jump back and forth between roles like a double-Dutch master. Add to that an intense soundtrack, a dark love triangle, and murder most foul, and you have an award-winning transformative formula of your very own. “This Is the Moment” to indulge yourself – we won’t judge.

Jekyll & Hyde, the gripping musical thriller, takes the MBT Main Stage Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 8 p.m. Many characters behave improperly – parental discretion is advised.

Around the globe, the first half of the 1940s evokes strong memories for those who lived it. Even for those without first-hand experience, there are equally strong images associated with that time.

Foremost is, of course, World War II. Officially lasting 6 years and 1 day, it was the deadliest conflict in human history, includ-ing the Holocaust and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centers.

Struggling with war-time concerns, Amer-icans were hungry for optimism and looking for moments of enjoyment. Enter the Swing era of music. This body of work is credited with doing much to sustain national morale during WWII. The intimate, romantic bal-lads and up-tempo big band instrumentals set the mood of a future filled with hope, promise, and prosperity.

The release of the 1939s tune In the Mood from American bandleader Glenn Miller, topped the charts for 13 straight weeks in 1940. It went on to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1983 and was named by National Public Radio in 1999 as “one of the 100 most important Ameri-can musical works of the 20th century.” In February 1944, the single was released as a V-Disc, one of a series of recordings sent free to overseas military personnel by the War Department.

the last time in the 20th century that the entire country shared a common popular music. On radio, in theaters, and in ballrooms, Big Bands were drawing record crowds. Soloists and vocal groups sang a repertoire of great songs, and the nation’s spirit moved with them.

The retro 1940s musical revue, also called In the Mood, began in 1994 as a celebration of this unusual era. Featuring the String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra and the In the Mood Sing-ers and Dancers, the music and arrangements are as authentic as it gets.

The show was included in the 50th Anni-versary WWII commemoration held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The engagement was extended twice to accom-modate crowds lining up for hours ahead of curtain time. In 1993, thousands attended a repeat performance outdoors on Constitution Avenue, staying to dance into the night. As a result of the overwhelming popularity of the show, In the Mood began a series of tours across the nation.

Now on their 20th Anniversary Tour, In the Mood can be seen on the Mount Baker Theatre Main Stage on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 7 p.m.

Drums have always been a part of human experience. Every culture has used drums, most often in ceremony or as a call to battle. “Taiko” generally refers to the relatively modern art of ensemble performance. How-ever, the word actually refers to the drums, and literally means “fat drum.” The specific history of taiko drums isn’t known, but the oldest physical evidence dates from the sixth or seventh century.

Taiko were traditionally used singly; en-semble performances popular today weren’t born until the early 1950s. Much of the credit for starting that post-war phenom-enon is given to jazz drummer Daihachi Oguchi. He happened upon an old piece of taiko music he wanted to perform, jazzed it up with a new arrangement, and broke with tradition (as jazz musicians often do) by assembling a taiko drum ensemble. This new style was an instant hit, and gained even greater popularity with the advent of Japanese television.

In 1969 Tagayasu Den, as part of a larger movement to rediscover Japanese folk art, collected a group of youths seeking to leave modern big city life for a communal alternative on Sado Island. Sado is Japan’s sixth largest island and located just off the coast in the Sea of Japan. The group, known as Za Ondekoza, dedicated themselves to taiko drumming not simply as a style of

By Cindi Pree

he Evolution of TaikoT

BACKSTAGE

music, but as a way of life. That life included rigorous training (including daily marathon running) and communal living alongside the drumming. This immersion and focus created a powerful performance that awed the world, and the group gained new members.

In 1981, the larger group split, and original members remained on Sado to form Kodo. The word “kodo” has dual meanings: “heart-beat” as the primal source of all rhythm, and “children of the drum.” The latter meaning reflects Kodo’s desire to play the drums simply, as with the heart of a child. Sado Island is still their home, and a place where indigenous performing arts and traditional ways of life continue to thrive. Kodo’s goal is a harmoni-ous balance between the natural world and its human inhabitants.

At the Kodo Apprentice Centre young peo-ple are trained in all matters of spirit and body, alongside musical technique. All apprentices

Page 31: Playbill for Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

live and train communally for two years, before select members go on to spend another year as junior members. If successful, they can then become full Kodo members. Men and women of all nationalities, experiences, and backgrounds are welcome. The only requirements are being over 18, healthy, and speaking advanced Japanese.

Kodo has achieved international fame, and is generally accepted as the oldest professional group of taiko drummers. The group bal-

ances preservation of the ancient drumming tradition with a re-interpretation of the art, bringing influences from international tours back to the Sado Island community to incor-porate into their work. From the rich depth of tradition, Kodo pushes taiko music to greater musical heights.

You can experience the tradition, the excitement, and the heartbeat on the Mount Baker Theatre stage, Wednesday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m.

MBT Education Program

The Wade Bennett King Education Series is a community engagement

program provided by the theatre for public, private, and home schools in Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and upper Snohomish counties. This exceptional program enriches school curricula while providing students with the cultural experience that comes from early exposure to professional live performance. When available, study guides pertaining to each show are provided to teachers, giving them an opportunity to

use the shows as educational tools in their classrooms. Question-and-answer sessions are frequently offered after the shows, providing an opportunity for the students to interact directly with the actors.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the theatre hosted more than 15,600 students and teachers at performances ranging from

stunt dogs and African folktales to traditional stage plays and musicals. The Education Series often features stage adaptations of well-known children’s literature, providing an opportunity for young people to look at reading and stories in a whole new way. To borrow a quote from Faustworks Mask Theatre, the goal of the Education Series is to “excite the student to continue learning well beyond the performance they have just seen.” For many students this is the only live theater experience they have had.

Our 19th Education Series begins in October 2014 with Cirque Mechanics and extends through May 2015. Education brochures for the 2014-15 Season featured the names of all business sponsors and community donors whose support makes this program possible. MBT is dedicated to honoring and raising community awareness about the strong commitment our sponsors make to the children of Bellingham and surrounding areas. For more information about the Education Series please contact Alison C. Terry, Program Manager, at (360) 733-5793. The Education Series is sponsored by the Frank King Family in memory of their son Wade.

THE MOUNT BAKER THEATRE was

the creation of a nationwide movement

to construct formidable theater buildings in

the hearts of American cities. Now, decades

later, the few remaining giant palaces of

another era are involved in a new movement,

this time to preserve a wonderful heritage and

to restore the structures for community use,

performing arts, and entertainment centers.

In 1978 the Mount Baker Theatre was placed

on the National Historic Landmark Register.

Through the cooperative efforts of the City

of Bellingham, Whatcom County, the State

of Washington, the citizen-based non-profit

Mount Baker Theatre Center and numerous

private donations, the historic landmark un-

derwent extensive restoration and remodeling

of the 1509-seat facility to assure a permanent

and useful place in the cultural life of the

community. It remains true to its heritage

of stage presentations and community use

events.

The construction of the Theatre itself was a

monumental task, employing several different

contractors and more than 80 craftsmen experi-

enced in stone masonry, carpentry, and plaster

casting. The 130–by-250-foot theatre was out-

fitted to accommodate vaudeville stage produc-

tions on a 26-by-75-foot stage under a 42-foot

proscenium arch. Dressing and practice rooms

behind the stage were connected by a tunnel to

the orchestra pit, and the best in counter-weight

lighting systems were used to enhance the live

performances.

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese taiko drum, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant living art form. In Japanese the word “kodo” conveys two meanings: the first is “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm. The word can also mean “children of the drum,” a reflection of Kodo’s desire to play the drums simply, with the heart of a child. Since the group’s debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, Kodo has given more than 3,700 performances on all five continents, spending about a third of the year overseas, a third touring in Japan and a third rehearsing and preparing new material on Sado Island. Collaborations with other artists and composers extend across the musical spectrum, and Kodo’s lack of preconceptions about its music continues to produce startling new fusion and forms.
