Its always fun to go out there and know that yourethe only show in town and maybe certain people who dont

normally get to watch you will be watching. Even with that, at the endof the day, its still just a football game, whether its 1 in the morning,

2 in the morning, nobody is watching, everybody is watching.Usually the rules are still the same: win.

Two of the most memorable plays of the2013 NFL season came courtesy of theMiami Dolphins, and they happened in thesame game. One was a thrilling 94-yardinterception return for a touchdown by cor-nerback Brent Grimes that left him soexhausted he laid sprawled on his back inthe end zone after tumbling across the goalline. The other, of course, was CameronWakes sack of quarterback Andy Dalton inthe end zone in overtime, which was onlythe third walk-off safety in NFL history.

What helped make the plays even more

memorable was the fact that they wereauthored in prime time for a whole nationaltelevision audience to see, as both came inthe Dolphins 22-20 victory against theCincinnati Bengals at Sun Life Stadium lastHalloween night.

The Dolphins are back at Sun LifeStadium for another Thursday night game,

and any fan can only hope to see that kindof magic again.

Tonight marks the 10th time in franchisehistory the Dolphins will play a Thursdaynight game and the seventh time the gamewill be played in Miami.

Its the first of two scheduled prime-timegames for the Dolphins the other is

Monday, Dec. 1 against the New York Jets atMetLife Stadium. On those two nights, theDolphins will be the only NFL game goingon.

Those are huge, defensive tackle EarlMitchell said. You get an opportunity toplay on the main stage. A lot of people arewatching you. Its great, especially when youmake those plays. You know a lot of peopleare watching. A lot of teams are watchingbecause theyre not playing. Its definitelyhuge when you make those plays. Its defi-nitely nice.

Wide receiver Rishard Matthews canattest to that. He had the biggest game of his three-year NFL career last season in a

Monday night game against the Tampa BayBuccaneers when he caught 11 passes for120 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a coming-out party for Matthewsand the only thing that would have madethe night perfect would have been aDolphins victory.

Its real nice, Matthews said. Werethe only people playing at night and just (to)get recognition, not only for myself but alsofor the team (was great). Unfortunately wedidnt get the W. This time hopefully we getthe W when everybody is watching.

Wake insisted that his preparation for anight game doesnt change one bit, but hedid admit there was something specialabout having his big play on Halloweennight 2013 seen by a national audience.

True, but it didnt change my approachto the game, he said. Its just more fun, Iguess, with that in the back of your mind,

but its not something I really focus on howmany fans are here or not here, how manypeople are cheering for us, against us. Imlike, theres a guy across from me, hes in myway, 2 oclock, 1 oclock, everybody is watch-ing, nobody is watching, prime time,Thursday night, Monday night, Sundaynight, doesnt matter. Whoop his (butt).

Heres what some other Dolphinsplayers had to say about playingin prime-time games:

G Daryn Colledge: I think everybodylikes prime-time games. I think everybodywants that spotlight once. The 1 oclockgames are fun. I dont think Id want to playa prime-time game every single week, buttheyre the ones that you kind of circle onthe calendar each year and say, OK, when ismy Thursday night game? When is myMonday Night Football game? Because

those are the chance when you know that allthe eyes and all the cameras are on us.

DT Jared Odrick: Every game is aprime-time game, but when you play atnight and youre one of only two teamsplaying, its a larger and higher platform.Everything is out there. The whole countryis watching you. Its another opportunity. The prime-time games are huge opportu-nities to put yourself out there and let the

world know how hard youve been workingas a team and let yourself shine and allyour hard work pay off. I really feel like itsno bigger than any other game, but thething is more people see you. It has nomore effect on your win-loss category. Aloss is a loss and a win is a win. Its justmore opportunity to show your work, showeverything thats been done as a team col-lectively.

Lamar Miller (26) rushed for 105 yards andBrent Grimes (21) had a spectacular touchdown

the last time the Dolphins had a Thursday nightgame at Sun Life Stadium, last years Halloweenvictory against Cincinnati.

    GAME PLANTODAYS MATCHUP| LAST TIME

    By ALAIN POUPART@apoupartFins

The allure of a Thursday night game, with a national television audience look-ing on, by itself would make thisDolphins-Bills matchup an attractiveone. But there are also clear playoff

implications between these two AFCEast rivals.

Buffalo and Miami will enter thegame at Sun Life Stadium tonight astwo of 11 teams in the AFC with winningrecords, meaning there will be little mar-gin for error for all teams involved in thefinal seven weeks of the 2014 regular

    season.For the Dolphins, the game

Thursday is also about payback. Buffalowon the earlier meeting this season, tak-ing a 29-10 decision at Ralph WilsonStadium in Week 2.

A lot has changed for the Bills sincethen, most notably with the change at

quarterback from second-year playerE.J. Manuel to veteran Kyle Orton.

Ortons arrival into the starting lineupseemed to energize the Bills, who are hopingthis is the year they return to the playoffs forthe first time since 1999.

Buffalo arrived in Miami on the heels of adisappointing home loss against another

AFC playoff hopeful, the Kansas City, but thatgame marked the return to action of runningback Fred Jackson.

It was a big boost for a Buffalo offensealso missing the other half of its great runningback tandem C.J. Spiller, who is on injuredreserve with a designation to return becauseof a shoulder injury.

The strength of this Bills team, however,

remains its defense, more specifically its frontfour.

In the 17-13 lost against the Chiefs, thatdefensive line showed off its pass-rushingability by combining for all six of the teamssacks on the day three by Marcell Dareus, two by Jerry Hughes and the other by Mario

Williams.Dareus now has 10 sacks on the season, and the other two also are on pace to reachdouble digits in 2014.

How the Dolphins handle Buffalos fiercefront four could go a long way toward deter-mining the outcome of the game tonight andwhich team can put itself in a better position

    to make a playoff push.

Looking to pay back the Bil

Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus already has reacheddouble digits in sacks this season.

    GAME DAYHEAD COACHS CORNER

    Q. How did it feel to get a game ballfor the win against the Chargers?

It meant a lot that Steve (Ross)would present the ball. I told them astory about my dad after I got it. It wasspecial, a special moment, and (Im)really thankful. I told the team, wevealways preached family is the mostimportant thing and it starts at the top,and I told them it starts with the owner. The owner believes in that and Ibelieve in that. When somebody onthe team needs something or needssupport for a family matter, thats the

most important thing. That really startswith Steve.

    Q. How has CB Cortland Finneganplayed this year?

I think hes very comfortable in thedefense. I think he likes being a MiamiDolphin. I think you have to give Lou(Anarumo), Jeff Burris and Blue Adamsa lot of credit for teaching them, catch-ing them up with the scheme andeverything. I think it fits his talent welland he seems to be comfortable here.

    Q. What have been the keys to RyanTannehills progress?

Good decisions, number one. I think thatif youre going to play quarterback for theMiami Dolphins, youve got to be a gooddecision-maker. I think his decision-makinghas been improving, especially as of late. The second thing youve got to be here isyouve got to be an accurate passer. I thinkhis completion percentage has steadily

been increasing, which is obviously a posi-

tive. The last thing is youve got to be ableto make plays and hes been able to makeplays both in the passing game and with hisfeet. I think the last few weeks hes had pret-ty good production running the football, not

that were going to run him 19 times agame. Those plays, when a quarterback cangain first downs or gain 6, 7, 8 eight yardswith his feet, those can help you an awful lot.

    Q. How has Mike Pouncey looked nowthat you have had a few games toevaluate him?

I like what he is doing. I thought he had a

solid performance against San Diego. Ithought Samson Satele had a solid perform-ance as well. Its good to have him out thereon the field as a competitor, and he goeshard every single play. I think hes added tothe cohesion of the offensive line.

    Q. Did you feel that the offense wouldtake time to develop?

I think historically offense sometimestakes a while to jell or get rolling. I dont careif its a new scheme because the transitionsometimes, in the years Ive been coachingin the league, you might have 30 percenttransition on your offensive team. It takestime, but I think were seeing signs of progress and those things need to continue.

    Q. What impact has Louis Delmas had on

the defense?I love the way he comes to work every

day. Hes an upbeat, positive individual. Heplays the game the right way. He plays fastand theres very little hesitation in his game.Hes done a good job for us. I think hes fitinto the locker room well. I enjoy beingaround him every day. I dont know that hesmissed a practice. Id have to go back andlook. Hes been on the field just about everyday working.

    Q. What went into the decision to hireBill Lazor as offensive coordinator?

Before I ever placed a call to anybody, Iwrote down on a piece of paper, took a pen-cil out, and wrote down 15 or 20 things thatI was looking for in an offensive coordinator.I wanted somebody that had quarterbackcoaching experience. I wanted somebodythat was an excellent communicator, some-body that communicates not only with the

players but with the staff, a guy that hadleadership skill, a guy that had play-callingexperience at some level, whether it be col-lege or the National Football League. Iwanted a team player, a guy that didnt havea big ego. That was what I did before I everpicked up the phone. I think I brought inthree different people. It was a gradual

thing. I had Bill in for an interview, I dontthink I hired him for about six or seven dayslater. We talked through a lot of things.Obviously, I have an offensive background,so I wanted to make sure he was compatiblewith some of the things that I believed in. Itwasnt really about if Bill called it a nineroute and I called it a go route, that to me

wasnt the issue. The issues were, does hebelieve in execution? Does he believe infundamentals? Does he believe in teaching?

Those are things that Ibelieved in. It was a gradualprocess. It wasnt one thing, Idont think. We just talkedthroughout the process and atthe end of the day he made adecision that he felt was bestfor him and his family.

The Dolphins-Bills rivalry was fun to be part of, butunfortunately for the bulk of my career we were ulti-mately on the losing side. Even though we were ableto even things up during the course of the regularseason, they always seemed to nip us in the playoffswhen they were making that outrageous run to fourstraight Super Bowls. It was such a fun and intenserivalry. They were a division opponent and we alwaysseemed to play games that mattered on national TV.

When we went to Buffalo, you could feel such anintense hatred. I got my first taste of it when we trav-eled up to Buffalo my rookie year. We got to the hotel, ordered some room service and I turned on the newsbefore meetings. Im watching the Buffalo news and

theyre going to different schools around the Buffaloarea and theyre showing kids squishing the fish byputting fish in blenders. That was just shocking to me.I was thinking, Wow, what is this all about?

Richmond Webb and I were just joking about this.Wed go to Buffalo and they had this song aboutBruce Smith called Leader of the Sack, and he wassuch a great player. It was fun to be part of it becausethose games meant so much. It wasnt just a football

game. It was Dolphins-Bills for supremacy in the AFCEast. Some years we won and some years we didnt.

You were challenged for record but you were alsochallenged on the field by the great players like theBruce Smiths, the Darryl Talleys and the CorneliusBennetts that you had to block. When we were on thesidelines we got to watch Jim Kelly and ThurmanThomas and Andre Reed and James Lofton and allthe great guys they had there. It was an amazing timein football in the AFC East.

You think about all the Hall of Famers or HonorRoll members from both teams that were on thosefields during that time and its amazing. You had twoHall of Fame coaches in Don Shula and Marv Levy, two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in Dan Marino and JimKelly, and whoever won those games had a great legup not only in the playoffs but also for a spot in the

    Super Bowl.

We had some good snow games up in Buffaloand then the dramatic AFC Championship Gamedown here in Miami. The game that I will alwaysremember was my rookie year and my first Dolphins-Bills game up in Buffalo at Rich Stadium. I had gone

on a local sports talk show down here with TimMcKyer and we were talking tough, saying, Buffalo isnot that good, and stuff like that, figuring it was justgoing to stay down here.

Well, we were warming up during the pregameand the Bills are all waiting on us looking at me, and Iasked Richmond what was going on and he didntknow. So I get up there for the first snap and BruceSmith said, We heard what you said and were goingto bring it to you today, rookie. They were lining upto get over me and give me hell that day, but luckily Iplayed well and it was snowing, but they never let meforget that.

I remember wondering, how could they haveheard that from a little TV show here in South Florida?I had made bulletin-board material before my firstDolphins-Bills game. They were actually mad. I knew

then that this was a rivalry not to be taken lightly at all.

    1. Was it weird at all coming back tothe Dolphins for a second time?

SS: It felt great. It felt like home. I walkedin and the first two guys I saw was BrandonFields and John Denney. Probably those twoguys and maybe Nate Garner and a few oth-ers are the only ones still here from the lasttime I was here. But it was great to see famil-iar faces. Yeah, it really felt like coming

home again.2. When you were here the first

time, did you think you would bespending your entire career withthe Dolphins?SS: I thought Id be here forever. Myfirst season we were 1-15. My second

season we went to the playoffs. I

thought wed take that season andbuild on it. But things just didntwork out that way. Im now in

my seventh differentoffense in eight years. But Im getting achance here. Youalways appreciate

    when you get a secondchance.

    3. For somebody who has neverseen you play, how would youdescribe yourself as a player?

SS: Im technique-oriented. Iwork my tail off. Everybody else

around here is bigger than me, so

I have no choice but to put inextra time and do everything Ican to get an edge. Thats whatIm about. Dont take any day orany practice for granted. I love

to play fast. Just keep goingand going until the play is

    over. Thats what Im

    about.

    73/96

    4. What are some Samson Satelespassions off the field?

SS: Playing with my kids. Listening tomusic. Dancing with my kids. Doing anythingI can to help them become better people. Toais 6. Trison is 4 and Tayden is 3. All boys. Idlove to see them become athletes and Illwork with them to get better in any sport theylove.

    5. The Dolphins struggled some withthe shotgun snap prior to your arrival. Isthat more difficult than it seems, andwhats the key to doing it well?

SS: You just have to keep doing it anddoing it. Repetition is the key. For me, I cameout of a run-and-shoot offense in college, sothats all I played. Everything was shotgun,

shotgun, shotgun. Its easy for me. I dont wantto jinx myself and have a bad snap, but it hap-pens so naturally for me.

    6. Who is the toughest defensive line-men youve ever had to block?

SS: Thats easy. My first year here with theDolphins, I went up against Jason Fergusonon the practice field every day. You block

Jason Ferguson and you can block anybody. He made me a lot better.

    7. You are such a nice, soft-spokenman. How do you flip the switch onSundays?

SS: This is a sport I really love to play. Yeah,Im pretty quiet off the field. But once you stepover that line, once it becomes Sunday after-

noon and youre playing football, you have toturn into a different person or this game willdevour you. I just think of my kids when Im onthe field. I dont want them to see their dadgetting beat up play after play. I want them tobe proud of me. And if that takes turning on aswitch, then I dont mind doing that. You haveto love the game, and I do.

    8. This is your eighth season in the

league? What do you enjoy most aboutplaying pro football?

SS: I love that you never stop learningabout this game. Im in my eighth year now.

Mike Pouncey is in his fourth year. You would-nt believe how much Mike has taught meabout this game. Every day you can learnsomething new and I want to learn somethingnew. You can learn from a rookie. You just haveto always be willing to listen.

    9. It is the offseason and you can eatanything you want. What are a few of

your guilty pleasures?SS: A pig in the ground. I love that. We

called it an Umu. Thats an underground oven.We cook pigs and grapefruits and bananasand we put it all together and just eat. I neverdo that during the season. But as soon as theseason is over, I tell me wife, lets go do anUmu. Im ready for pig!

    10. Now that you are here for a sec-ond time, do you hope deep down thatthis is your final stop in the NFL?

SS: I would love that. But I know the situa-tion here. They have a Pro Bowl center. He is agreat player and Ive learned from him since Igot here. You just never know where yourcareer is going to take you. But, yes, Id love

for it to end up where it all began.

But he took a cir-cuitous route to get to the Dolphins, including a two-year stint in the U.S.Navy beginning in 1994 after gradu-ating from high school. For most of that time, he worked as a postal clerkon assignment in the MediterraneanSea aboard the U.S.S. John F.Kennedy, the Navys last convention-ally powered aircraft carrier. One daywhile in port in Aviano, Italy, Johnsoncalled his high school football coach

For years, Miami Dolphins players(including fullback Lousaka Polite,

MY GENERATIONTHIS WEEK: RUNNING BACKS As told to Natasha Thomas

    1. Who is the toughest linebacker youhave faced?

Lavonte David of the Buccaneersbecause he is a fast guy who plays all threedowns. Hes physical and very active.

    2. Who sets the bar at your position?

Adrian Peterson because he runs hardand he has the speed and the power. Also,

Arian Foster sets the bar at my position3. What player did you admire growingup?

Warrick Dunn. I was a smaller guy back inthe day, so I liked the way he ran. I was ableto watch him play a lot when he was with theTampa Bay Buccaneers and when he was at

    Florida State.

    4. What has been the most memorablemoment of your career?

Scoring my first touchdown my rookieyear against the Cleveland Browns. It was mydream scoring a touchdown in the NFL, sothat was a big moment.

    5. What coach had the biggest influenceon your playing career?

Coach Jeff Nixon. Hes probably one of my favorite coaches that I have had so far. He

just pushes the whole running backs groupand me as well. Also my college coach, DanaDimel, at Kansas State. He was my first run-ning back coach. He taught me the ropesand how to play the position because I was aquarterback before I went there. So he really

    taught me everything.

    1. Who was the toughest linebacker youfaced?

The toughest linebacker I faced wasJeremiah Trotter. He was a sledgehammer. He was probably about two inches tallerthan me and about 15 pounds heavier. Hewas extremely dense. He knew how to comedownhill like no other.

    2. Who set the bar at your position?

I cant pick one guy. There are two.Lorenzo Neal and Tony Richardson. They bothplayed for 17 years at fullback and that speaksfor itself. They could do everything. They keptthemselves valuable at the fullback position, which has become extinct. They were always

included in their offensive package. Theycould do everything. They could block, catch. They were always an asset to their teams.

    3. What player did you admire growing up?

Barry Sanders. He played with such humil-ity. He never celebrated even though he was

one of the best players ever. He would scorea touchdown and just go to the sideline. Hewas never outspoken. He was a pro and Irespected his humility.

    4. What was the most memorablemoment of your career?

The most memorable moment of mycareer was making the team as an undraftedfree agent. It was really hard to do. In fact, Istarted my first game and it was on mymoms birthday. That was pretty special.

    5. What coach had the biggest influenceon your playing career?

Bill Parcells. He helped mold me into theguy I am now. He taught me how to be a pro.I started my career with him inDallas. I wentto Chicago for a year and then he reachedout to me and brought me down here toMiami. Thats when my career took off. I haveto give him the credit for helping me maxi-mize my potential as a player.

    THE LAST WORDBY ANDY COHEN

We watch football on Sundays and werarely think about who else might be watch-ing. Our minds never travel half a world away.We never picture the scene at an Air Forcebase in Afghanistan where American soldiers,Dolphins fans, huddle around a television setin the middle of the night.

But its happening. Its there. EverySunday, when the war allows, when the timeis there to escape, when the television recep-tion is just right, our troops watch football.

You think you feel pressure watching theDolphins play? You think your stomach is inknots when Ryan Tannehill fades back topass? Think what Senior Master Sergeant JimMiller must be feeling, huddled in front of hislaptop, not knowing if at any minute hellhave to return to the business of defendinghis country. Thats pressure.

I watch the Dolphins, said Miller, andfor a moment you dont feel like you are (atwar) anymore. If nothing bad is happeningoutside, you can really lose yourself in thegame. Its a great escape.

As I decided what to write about VeteransDay, as I spoke to several players in theDolphins locker room who have family ties tothe Armed Forces, I realized that these playersarent the story. The real stories on VeteransDay are people like Senior Master SergeantJim Miller. Born a Dolphins fan. Bleeds aquaand orange. Follows his favorite team as besthe can. He was in Kuwait in 2002. He was inIraq in 2008. He was in Afghanistan in 2013.

Now he is in Atlanta, waiting to see if hellbe deployed once again, not knowing wherehell be next football season. I asked Millerabout watching Dolphins games in that part

of the world. I asked him to paint a picture so

we can understand how difficult it is for himto see his beloved team.

Heres two stories from last season: The Dolphins were playing the Patriots

at Sun Life Stadium. Its rare to be able tocatch any of the action live in that part of theworld. Most of the time its on tape delay. Buton this early Monday morning, at Bagram AirForce base about 40 miles from Kabul,Afghanistan, Miller was able to hook up thedigital mobile service on his laptop comput-er. Somehow, he was able to project that pic-ture on a big wall.

It started out as four of us watching theDolphins-Patriots game, Miller recalled. Thenit grew to eight or nine of us. It was a quietnight. Not much going on. I cant tell you howgreat it was to be able to watch that game.

Earlier last season, the Dolphins were

playing the Cincinnati Bengals on Halloween.

One soldiers love for the Dolph

I watch the Dolphinsand for a moment youdont feel like you are(at war) anymore. ...

    Its a great escape.

  • 8/10/2019 PlaybookFinsiders Playbook: Dolphins Vs. Bills

    93/96

You remember the game, dont you?Cameron Wake won it with a safety in dramat-ic fashion. Miller was able to get off a littleearly that night and, being a Thursday nightgame, the Armed Forces network was show-ing it live. There was a 50-inch TV mounted ona wall in the rec room at Bagram Air Forcebase. Miller remembers it as if were yesterday.

Its the middle of the night and whoknows whats going on outside, and CamWake gets that sack and me and my buddyare screaming and going crazy, Miller said.We got to see it live! Imagine that.

Miller may not have been the biggestDolphins fan over there, but hes certainly inthe conversation. Hanging from his bunk wasa Dolphins flag. Next to his bunk was a DanMarino jersey. Theres even a picture of thatDolphins flag on the front of his vehicle.

You want stories? Miller has plenty more.

There was the time in 2009 in Iraq. Miller wasguarding weapons the night the Dolphinswere playing the Jets. His buddy relieved himso he could catch the last part of the game.Miller remembers running to the chow hall. That was a great night, he said. TheDolphins beat the Jets 31-27.

Sometimes it takes stories like the onesJim Miller tells to help you appreciate theimpact a football team like the Dolphins canhave, even several thousand miles away on aquiet night in the middle of nowhere.Sometimes we forget about those who wouldgive anything to be sitting in Sun LifeStadium on a powder blue Sunday afternoon.

So the game ends in the middle of thenight in Afghanistan. What happens then, Iask Jim Miller. I just remember where I amand go back to work, he says. But its
