Coaching Philosophy The goal of the United Local Boys Soccer Program is to provide a player-centered learning environment that helps each player to develop technically, tactically, physically, and psycho-socially; as well as fostering team development. Complimentary to this player and team development, is the desire to foster the life skills of integrity, sportsmanship, discipline, responsibility, humility, teamwork, commitment and respect, as well as promote a healthy, athletic, and active lifestyle, through the sport of soccer. The coaching staff aims to utilize their love and passion for the “Beautiful Game” to help each player become a “Complete Soccer Player.” The Complete Soccer Player: (1) is comfortable with the ball and uses appropriate techniques on demand and under pressure, (2) has an understanding of the game, (3) understands the roles and responsibilities associated with the principles of play as they pertain to attacking and defending, and (4) is comfortable in all positions or areas of the field. By cultivating a fun and challenging player-centered learning environment, each player can develop an understanding and enjoyment of the game, as well as developmentally-appropriate mastery of the techniques, skills, and tactics necessary to become a Complete Soccer Player. Ultimately, by focusing on individual player development, our soccer program will find success and continue its winning tradition.

WINNERS MAKE IT HAPPEN…LOSERS LET IT HAPPEN!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Program Goals and Objectives In order for the United Local Boys Soccer Program to achieve success this season, a winning attitude MUST be developed throughout the entire program. There are 5 components of a winning attitude: 1. HARDWORK: This is a result of consistent effort, not effort every once in a while. A consistent work ethic allows one to become stronger mentally, resulting in increased confidence. To be successful one must be confident in themselves and their teammates.

Page 4: Player Handbookunitedlocalboyssoccer.weebly.com/.../player_handbook.pdf · 2019-05-08 · 4 2. DISCIPLINE: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it,

4

2. DISCIPLINE: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, both on and off the field. Having composure on the field when the game is on the line is a sign of discipline. All successful teams have discipline and most unsuccessful teams lack discipline. Discipline is a daylong, year round commitment to success. 3. COMMITMENT: We need players to be committed as a student-athlete EVERYDAY of the season, and throughout the off season too. This commitment is not only to your team, but also to your family, to your studies, and to your friends. Holding each other accountable is very important! 4. TEAMWORK: Everyone must play as one unit. The good of the team needs to come before individual desires. Selfishness can destroy any team’s success. Each program, from its most talented to its least talented player, has a role to fulfill and each player needs to accept his role within the framework of the team. Each player needs to work to their maximum potential to benefit the good of the team. 5. IMPROVEMENT: No one is ever good enough that they cannot improve their game. Players either get better or worse; they rarely ever stay the same. Every individual and team must strive to improve daily or that person or team will regress in ability.

MUCH MORE CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITH A LARGE GROUP OF AVERAGE TALENTED INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAY AS A TEAM THAN WITH A SMALL GROUP OF HIGHLY TALENTED INDIVIDUALS WHO PLAY FOR

THEMSELVES! IMAGINE WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IF A HIGHLY TALENTED GROUP PLAYS AS A TEAM!

Team/Player Rules, Policies, and Expectations Athletic Handbook: All policies outlined in the United Local Athletic Handbook must be followed by all players. The complete handbook can be found on the United Local High School website (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-F9uEbifgddb0pBRnhvWWNGUzg/view). Attendance: Each player is required to attend all mandatory practices, scrimmages, games, and other team functions (i.e. banquets, Meet the Team night). Each player is expected to attend optional open gyms, open fields, fundraiser events, and other team functions (i.e. team-bonding events). Players are expected to be on-time for all team functions and ready to perform AT the scheduled time (NOT arriving at the scheduled time). Starting positions and playing time will be affected by attendance. It is the players’ responsibility to notify the coaching staff if you will be late or need to miss any team functions. Notifying the coaching staff does NOT automatically mean that the absence will be considered excused. You are making a commitment to this team and as such it should be a top priority. Work schedules MUST be adjusted around practices, scrimmages, games, and other team functions. An unexcused absence will result in suspension from the next scheduled game. Multiple unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the team. Awards Policies: There are several awards and honors that players may be eligible for at the discretion of the coaching staff. Potential awards and honors include the following:

1. ALL-EOAC Team: Players are nominated by the coaching staff and are selected for 1st Team All-EOAC, 2nd Team All-EOAC, or Honorable Mention amongst all EOAC players. Selected players will have their pictures taken for local newspapers. Any grade is eligible.

2. Hat-Trick Honors: Players who score three goals in the same game receive a medal at the conclusion of the season commemorating their accomplishment.

3. Team Captains: 2-3 Captains will be chosen each year to lead team warm-ups, assist the coaching staff, and be the voice of the team on the field during games. The coaching staff will typically pick 1 captain and the team will vote on the other 1-2 at the start of the upcoming season. At the coaching staff’s discretion a Leadership Council may be used with team captains selected at the conclusion of the season (if a Leadership Council is utilized those interested will be provided with details). Being a captain in a previous season does not guarantee your selection. Team Captains are expected to abide by the Team Captain’s Handbook (http://unitedlocalboyssoccer.weebly.com/captains-handbook.html) and serve as New Player Mentors. Occasionally an “Honorary Captain” will be selected on a game-by-game basis to reward hard work, leadership, and improvement. Captains are expected to exemplify integrity, sportsmanship, discipline, responsibility, humility, teamwork, commitment, and respect. Captains are leaders both on the field, off the field, and in the classroom (both during the season and in the offseason). Any grade is eligible.

4. Team Golden Boot Award: The player who records the most goals and assists during the season will earn the Golden Boot Award. Goals count as 2 points and assists count as 1 point in determining who is selected for this honor. Any grade is eligible.

5. Team Assists Leader: The player who records the most assists during the season will earn the Team Assists Leader Award. Any grade is eligible.

6. Team Defender of the Year Award: The player who records the most steals and intercepts during the season and is determined by the coaching staff to have played the central role in

8. Team Golden Gloves Award: The player who records the most saves in goal during the season and is determined by the coaching staff to have been our team’s best goalkeeper will earn the Golden Gloves Award. Players will have the chance to give input into the selection of the award recipient. Any grade is eligible.

9. Team Most Improved Player Award: The player who has made the most significant improvements in terms of their individual technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social skills will earn the Most Improved Player Award. This will be determined by the coaching staff with input from the players. Any grade is eligible.

10. Team Newcomer of the Year Award: The incoming freshman or first-year player who made the most significant impact on the team’s success for the season will receive the Newcomer of the Year Award. This will be determined by the coaching staff with input from the players. Any grade is eligible.

11. Team Player of the Year Award: The best overall player who made the most significant impact on the team’s success for the season will receive the Player of the Year Award. This will be determined by the coaching staff with input from the players. Any grade is eligible.

14. YDSSCA Academic Award (Team): Teams that have a combined overall 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible to receive this award and will receive recognition at the District Awards Banquet.

15. YDSSCA All-County Team: Players are nominated by the coaching staff and are selected for 1st Team All-County or Honorable Mention amongst all Mahoning and Columbiana County players. Selected players attend the District Awards Banquet. Any grade is eligible.

16. YDSSCA All-District Team: Players are nominated by the coaching staff and are selected for 1st Team All-District or 2nd Team All-District amongst all Division III YDSSCA players. Selected players attend the District Awards Banquet. The top 1st Team All-District players (varies by year) are considered for the 1st and 2nd All-Ohio Teams and attend the State Awards Banquet. Any grade is eligible.

17. YDSSCA Senior College Showcase: Seniors who have had exemplary high school careers, will be attending college, and are interested in playing in college may be nominated by the coaching staff for the YDSSCA Senior College Showcase. This is not technically an award; rather it is an opportunity for college scouts to watch players who are serious about playing at the next level.

18. YDSSCA Team Sportsmanship Award: Teams that exemplify sportsmanship may be nominated by other District teams for the Team Sportsmanship Award. Selected teams will receive recognition at the District Awards Banquet.

Chain-of-Command: As outlined in the Athletic Handbook, please follow the established Chain-of-Command to discuss any problems or issues. The coaching staff is approachable and always willing to discuss problems or issues with players and/or parents. However, no discussions will be held the same day as a game. Please contact the coaching staff the next day to schedule a time to meet to discuss your concerns. The established Chain-of-Command is as follows: Assistant Coach → Head Coach → Athletic Director → Principal → Superintendent →School Board Equipment: Each player will be issued a uniform and is expected to help with practice and game equipment set up and clean up.

1. Uniform: Each player will be issued a home (navy) and away (white) jersey, one pair of shorts, and some season’s warm-up pants/top. These are expected to be kept clean and must be returned at the conclusion of the season.

2. Additional Equipment: Players will be expected to purchase/fundraise for two pair of socks (one home and one away), a team shirt (to be worn for game warm-ups), and a team hoody; purchased/fundraised items may be kept at the conclusion of the season. If players are assigned a practice ball or other equipment, they must maintain and return it at the conclusion of the season. Players must also provide their own shin guards, soccer cleats, bag, tape (if worn must match color of socks), and compression/”UnderArmor” (the team will need to decide which color will be worn for this season).

3. Team Captains: All pinnies, cones, and training equipment are put away properly. Ensure water, medical kit, ball bag, and pinnies are on bus for away games. Captains are also responsible for preparing a school appropriate warm-up CD (approved by coaching staff).

4. Seniors: Medical kit and pinnies for away games. American flag before and after home games.

5. Juniors: Balls are properly inflated and ready for activities. All balls are collected and put

away properly following practices and games. Prepares ball bag for away games.

6. Sophomores: Helping with balls and training equipment. 7. Freshmen: Water (for practice and away games) and corner flags (before and after games).

Make sure food for away games is on the bus. 8. All Players: Clean both home and away bench areas after home games and the bus after away

games. The team will run one lap at the next practice for each piece of trash found by the coaching staff.

Game Protocol: Players are expected to conduct themselves in a disciplined and respectful manner at all games. Players represent the United Local Boys Soccer Program, the United Local School District, our community, their families, and their friends; as such they should represent them with pride and respect. The following guidelines are expected to be followed for all games:

1. On game days, players will wear team shirt, dress shirt/tie, or whatever the captains/coaches agree upon to school. There will be consequences at next practice for failure to comply.

2. On game days, follow proper nutrition guidelines. For away games pack a pre-game snack that can be eaten before we leave on the bus. Drink 6-8 8oz glasses of water each day with 17-20oz consumed 2-3 hours before the game.

3. Players should arrive and be ready to perform (1 hour before kickoff for home games and at scheduled bus departure time for away games).

Page 9: Player Handbookunitedlocalboyssoccer.weebly.com/.../player_handbook.pdf · 2019-05-08 · 4 2. DISCIPLINE: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it,

9

4. Come with all required equipment; players will wear navy jersey/socks for home games and white jersey/socks for away games; team shirt must be worn for warm-ups; no “illegal” equipment may be worn (i.e. jewelry, wrong color tape/compression).

5. While at games we sit as a team; only those listed on the roster may sit with us. 6. Address the referees as “sir” or “ma’am”; only captains and coaches speak to referees. 7. Equipment should be placed in your bag and organized behind the benches before warm-ups. 8. Respect the bench areas and keep them clean and orderly. 9. Players must wear practice pinnies and remain in the bench area when not playing in a game. 10. Players who are not in the game are expected to be paying attention to the game and cheer in

a positive and sportsmanship-like manner; no horseplay will be tolerated. 11. Realize we are substituting for a purpose; giving the coaching staff attitude is a quick way to

reduce your playing time. 12. Run on and off the field when substituted, at half time, and at the end of the game. 13. Do not ask when or if you can go in; if and when the coaching staff decides to play you is at

the discretion of the coaching staff; we know you want to get it…you don’t have to remind us. If you want to discuss your playing time, game day is not the time to do it; set up a time with the coaches before or after practice.

14. During half time the coaching staff will give you 3-4 minutes to express your input, the remaining time is for the coaching staff; players should be quiet and focused at this time.

15. Sportsmanship is expected at all times; during player announcements shake hands (and make eye contact) with opposing coaches; at conclusion of game shake hands (and say “Good Game”—and only this) with opposing team; shake hands with the referees; thank fans at conclusion of game as well.

16. Captains will lead/delegate team reflection/break-out time (participation is optional). 17. Players will not be released to go home from games until all equipment is accounted for and

put away properly; captains will confirm this and coaches will release you. 18. Missing a game may result in suspension from the next scheduled game as well.

Grade Monitoring: Players are expected to maintain academic eligibility (both during the season and in the off-season). Eligibility will be checked on a bi-weekly basis and players found to be ineligible will have their eligibility checked weekly for the remainder of the season. Ineligible players MAY be permitted to continue to practice at the coaching staff’s discretion, but will be unable to play in any games. Our team academic goal is a 3.0+ gpa. The coaching staff WILL be monitoring your grades. Language: This team has a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate language or gestures. Proper respect should be shown at all times towards teammates, coaches, opponents, officials, and fans. Players should look to encourage teammates after mistakes during practices and games! Coaches and captains will hold players accountable, but every player should do their part to enforce this policy. When inappropriate language is used the player will run one lap for each letter of the sentence spoken (including spaces and punctuation). Inappropriate gestures result in a 10 lap penalty. Multi-Sport Student-Athletes: Players should consider carefully before attempting to play multiple Fall sports. The schedule for the United Local Boys Soccer Program is very demanding and requires the full focus and energy of each player. Please note that if soccer is declared to be your primary

Page 10: Player Handbookunitedlocalboyssoccer.weebly.com/.../player_handbook.pdf · 2019-05-08 · 4 2. DISCIPLINE: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it,

10

sport, you will NOT be released to miss any practices, games, scrimmages, or other team functions for a secondary sport. Playing multiple sports in the same season does not allow your body to fully recover and typically results in the student-athlete playing two sports to a mediocre degree. Instead, players are strongly encouraged to focus on soccer and excel at it. New Player Mentoring: Each incoming player (whether a Freshman or a first-year upperclassman) will be assigned a Team Captain as a mentor. The role of the mentor is to help the new players get acclimated to our team culture, policies, rules, and expectations. The mentor should help ensure that the new players are following and meeting team policies, rules, and expectations and should look to build a close relationship with the new players both on and off the field. Each mentor should discuss any potential problems/issues that they become aware of with the coaching staff. The ideal outcome of this mentorship is a smooth transition into our boys high school soccer program. Player Evaluations: Each player will be continuously evaluated during pre-season training, throughout the season, and into post-season training to ensure continued growth technically, tactically, physically, and psycho-socially. The coaching staff will attempt to provide each player at least one written evaluation each season using the United Local High School Boys Soccer Player Evaluation Guidelines (found at the end of this Player Handbook). This written evaluation will be completed in conjunction with players completing a self-evaluation of their own technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social development. Playing Time: Transitioning from youth, travel, or club soccer to high school soccer can be very difficult. Please understand that unlike in youth, travel, or club soccer there is no guarantee that every player will play every game. Being part of the United Local Boys Soccer Program is a privilege and an honor. Being a returning player or former starter does not guarantee continued playing time. Playing time and starting positions MUST be earned and maintained throughout the season. The coaching staff will make playing time and starter decisions based upon attendance, performance, improvement, and attitude in practices and games. Players will be continuously evaluated throughout the season to ensure continued growth technically, tactically, physically, and psycho-socially. Changes in playing system, playing style, and our opponent can also affect playing time and starters. In the absence of a JV squad, the coaching staff will do its best to ensure that all players have the opportunity to continue their technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social development. Players are permitted a total of 42 halves per season (this counts JV games) and may not play more than three halves in a single day. Practice Protocol: We have limited time at practices to prepare for upcoming games. As such, the following guidelines are expected to be followed for all practices:

1. On practice days, follow proper nutrition guidelines. Pack a pre-practice snack that can be eaten before the start of practice. Drink 6-8 8oz glasses of water each day with 17-20oz consumed 2-3 hours before practice.

2. Players should arrive early and have practice equipment on before the scheduled start time for practice; good rule of thumb is 15 minutes before practice to get your equipment on.

3. Players must wear soccer cleats and shin guards at each practice (not negotiable). 4. No cell phones or other electronics are permitted to be used at practice from the scheduled

start time until the coaching staff dismisses you from practice.

Page 11: Player Handbookunitedlocalboyssoccer.weebly.com/.../player_handbook.pdf · 2019-05-08 · 4 2. DISCIPLINE: This is doing what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it,

11

5. Freshmen should have the water jug filled BEFORE the scheduled start time for practice. 6. If a player is late to practice or not ready to practice by the scheduled start time, the entire

team will run 1 lap per minute late. 7. Players are expected to be coachable, disciplined, respectful, focused, positive, and work hard

at each practice. Being coachable means they can take instruction constructively, think about it, and make the improvements and changes in either technique or attitude.

8. Horseplay will not be tolerated at practice. 9. While waiting for practice to begin players should juggle at half field or play keep away with

teammates in the 18 box. You are NOT permitted to shoot on goal or take corner kicks; focus on your technical fundamentals and get 1,000 warm-up touches on the ball.

10. When given a water break, please take it quickly (5 gulps of water) and get back on the field ready for the next drill; leave the balls where instructed…until instructed.

11. Players will not be released to go home from practices until all equipment is accounted for and put away properly; captains will confirm this and coaches will release you.

12. Players will be continuously evaluated using the attached Player Evaluation guidelines. 13. Missing practices will affect playing time and starters. Missing practice the day before a game

may result in suspension from that game.

Travel: Players should arrive at school 5-10 minutes before the scheduled bus departure time. The bus will leave at the scheduled departure time and will NOT wait for late players. If you miss the bus it is your responsibility to find a ride to the game (consequences will be enforced at the next practice). Players are expected to ride the school bus to and from games and scrimmages. The bus ride to and from games and scrimmages is often used by the coaching staff to go over game related information or to debrief. Players will NOT be permitted to use any electronic devices on the way to the game and MAY be required to sit in silence for the last 10 minutes of the bus ride to begin to mentally prepare for the game. Players will be permitted to use electronic devices on the bus ride home. In circumstances that a player needs to ride home with a parent following a game, a written note must be given to the coaching staff BEFORE leaving for the game (simply telling the coach is NOT acceptable). Violations: Violations of team rules, policies, and expectations will result in the penalties/consequences outlined throughout this Player Handbook. Additionally, the following guidelines will be utilized by the coaching staff:

1. Any behavior considered to be unbecoming, whether it occurred in or out of school, may result in suspension and/or dismissal from games or the team at the coaching staff’s discretion.

2. Players receiving detentions, ADC, or out-of-school suspensions may have additional penalties as deemed appropriate by the coaching staff.

3. Players receiving a Yellow Card in a game will immediately be substituted from the game as required by the OHSAA; it is the coaching staff’s discretion if you will return to the game.

4. Players receiving two Yellow Cards in the same game are disqualified for the remainder of the game as required by the OHSAA.

5. Players who receive a direct red card by an official are ejected from the game and the OHSAA will suspend the player for two additional games; you will not be permitted to be in the bench

area during your suspension, but you are required to attend the games and sit in the fan areas; additional penalties may be imposed by the coaching staff.

6. Players who receive two direct red cards in one season will be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season and are not eligible for any honors as required by the OHSAA.

7. Any soccer player that receives 5 Yellow Cards in one season will be suspended one game by the coaching staff. If that player receives any more Yellow Cards that season they will have to meet with the coaching staff for disciplinary action.

8. Players who receive their 5th Yellow Card in the last game of the season will serve their one game suspension during the first regular season game the following season.
