September is here. School is here. And soon,
our After-School Programs will be in full
swing.
The Multi-Cultural Center, as a state-licensed
after-school facility, continues to grow the
education-based (and fun!) programs for
youth. Coming Monday, Sept. 19, we’ll be
back in business with Froggy Reads, Natives
Count, Native Youth Club and Self-
Defense/Judo.
The goal of our after school programs is to
provide a free, safe, culturally sensitive
environment where students can grow
academically. Here’s a bit more about each of
our programs:
Froggy Reads is focused on reading
enhancement for immigrant and refugee
students. We assess students in
comprehension, accuracy, fluency and
expanded vocabulary – the basis for many
literacy programs.
Natives Count is a math program serving
Native American elementary students.
Natives Count provides math instruction to
students who are below proficiency
requirements. The program follows
recommended curriculum guidelines from
AVMR (Add+Vantage Math Recovery).
Native Youth Club is a cultural
enhancement program designed specifically
for students in grades K-5. Lessons are
designed to increase awareness of cultural
traditions, history, symbolism and language
of all Native Americans.
Self-Defense/Judo teaches both the
physical and mental discipline integral to the
practice of this martial art from. A big thrust
of the program focuses on anti-bullying. The
program has moved to Fridays this year and
the Multi-Cultural Center will provide
transportation.

The Coliseum is more popular than ever
before. The commercial kitchen is a big
draw for many events and is included in
the rental price. The Coliseum is larger
than most banquet facilities in the area
boasting 9,400 sq. ft. of space on the main
floor: enough for 1000+ theater seating
and 400+ banquet seating!

Unique Historic Event Venue
The annual Native American Day Wacipi
– which is free and open to the public –
allows Native and non-Native people alike
to learn about and share in this important
cultural heritage and tradition. This event
features food, dancing, music and
educational opportunities for all who
attend.
With the help of organizer Bobby
Johnson, announcer Jerome Kills Small,
drum groups Iron Wing and RHS Drum,
and support from the Catholic Diocese
of Sioux Falls, the MCC is proud to once
again organize and host this incredible
event.
We look forward to seeing you there.

The Multi-Cultural Center gives a huge
thanks to First Presbyterian Church for
their tremendous donation to our Career

program a success.
Meet Trent. As Interpreting Services Coordinator, he plays a vital role in connecting clients in need with our many on-staff interpreters. In a pinch, Trent – who speaks fluent Spanish – doubles as an interpreter himself. He honed his language skills while living abroad in Valparaiso, Chile, where he met his wife, Karina. Best part of the job? “No two days are alike,” Trent said.
